Video not rendering onto dvd/blu-ray, any idea whats going on?

Hi guys,

First time on this forum and did some searching before posting this.. so if I missed it my apologies.
Im trying to burn a simple bluray disc of some wedding content I shot. I made a highlight reel exported in the same setting as the main video but when I burn the disc I can only hear the audio from the file.

It seems hit or miss as on some discs it will work, sometimes not.
Im basically at the pt to where I'm praying for a disc to work 100% and just purchase disc copier
software to make an exact copy of the "good" version.

Any idea whats causing video to not be rendered to the bluray/dvd?
It seems to happen no matter whether its a dvd5,dvd9 or bluray (25gb version)

Hi

. . . . . I made a highlight reel exported in the same setting as the main video but when I burn the disc I can only hear the audio from the file.. . . .

Can you clarify this statement please - in particular what format you are exporting to and how you are burning this to disc ?

. . . . It seems hit or miss as on some discs it will work, sometimes not. . . . .

Most problems like this are a result of using 'economy' discs.

For BD I use Verbatim - so far with no problems.

What brand / type of discs are you using?

. . . . Im basically at the pt to where I'm praying for a disc to work 100% and just purchase disc copier . . . .

I use multiple BD drives in my PC and Nero Burning ROM which can burn to multiple drives simultaneously - this is more cost effective than buying a dedicated BD copier.

If you are not doing so, I recommend you use BD-RE discs for your initial burns until you have the movie as you want it.  I then use Nero to copy the BD-RE for BD discs and then re-use the BD-RE.

Hi John!

I export my files as 1280x720 24p H.264 codec into an mp4 format.
Also great suggestions I will look into purchasing verbatim discs from now on. I dont rememer the brand I bought but it was purchased at Fry's, it was more expensive so I thought they would be better... apparently not.
Ive noticed of the content at least most of it will play on my PC but once I put the disc in my ps3 to check compatability nothing happens.

I will look into purchasing NERO for the copier, it seemed cheaper than everything else but since you think its good Ill give it a try for sure.

Also great idea about that BD-RE, that is way more cost effective. I already wasted 3 BD-R discs due to this issue.

This would suggest you are burning the highlight reel mp4 to disc as is using Windows Explorer or some other burning program is this correct ?

If theis is correct -  then you should be importing the exported highlight back into MEP as a new project then burning as a BD from the Burn tab and selecting an approprite menu template?

some other burning program? Nope I just use MEP.
Im just taking my mp4 renders and burning them onto bluray, I didnt have any issues doing this w/ DVDs
but im fairly new to burning with Blurays. Is there a protocol I should be doing?

Also someone suggested to encode into a folder first, i see that opeion in step 3 of the disc burning.
I may not understand how this works but when I do this how do I then burn this into a disc once this has been encoded, the reason I ask is when I go back to step 3 in the burning process it seems to want to burn the existing projects+the encoded directory effectively making my burn time twice it seems.

I may have it wrong but thats just what I see as I notice the data comsumption on the disc rose dramatically.

Hi

. . . . im fairly new to burning with Blurays. Is there a protocol I should be doing? . . . .

Burning a BD from a project requires no different protocols to burning DVD's - the process is the same you  just use a different Burn option ie one of the three types - DVD / BD / AVCHD.

. . . .  how do I then burn this into a disc once this has been encoded . . . .

You need to use a burning program which can handle BD burning from the files created - eg ImgBurn (freeware) or Nero Burning ROM.

. . . . Also someone suggested to encode into a folder first . . . .

I do not use the Encode in directory option - preferring a different method when I do not use rewriteable discs and burn directly and that is the Image Recorder option, in the Burn dialog

to create an ISO disc image  which I then mount this using gBurner Virtual Drive a sofware disc drive emulator, and play with BD player software on the computer - note you must have a true BD player software which emulates a real player, in my case it is Nero BD player.  Many players that will play the BD's video files directly do not allow testing of the menu system and chapter menus.

This gives me the opportunity to fully test the 'disc' which if OK I can then burn to a real disc(s) using Nero.

I consider Nero, or its counterparts, as being one of the essential tools for working with discs.
