I would like to edit an mp4 file Ratio 1:1 (720x720). I start a new project - social media - square 1:1. When I open the video it gets distorted. I seems to have a black bar on the top and bottom. How can I fix this? Thank you!
The video, codec the MP4 file is encoded with - to help with this download and install MediaInfo and analyse the file causing the issue and post all of the data, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.
Right click the video object on the timeline and select Object Properties in the video data what is the Aspect ratio value, if it is not 1:1 set it to 1:1 - you may need to type this in the drop down box.
Unfortuntaly, I cant change the object property to 1:1. There is no option for it. Screenshot attached, but it only shows 16:9 in the screenshot, other options are 2:1, 4:3, 5:4, 2.21. Nothing more.
Here is the MediaInfo:

As John has said, type it in to the aspect ratio box. Click in the box, highlight the current ratio, type 1:1, then click OK. Your video will be reshaped to 1:1.
Could you host that file on a hosting site eg Google Drive and give us the link so we can have a play with it. I have already submitted a bug report on a similar issue and it would be good to have your file to demonstrate the bug exists on this file type as well.
I created a square 1080 x 1080 HEVC export in MMS, the one you see in the video clip above, then imported that into a Social media square project, shows the bug.
From a Vegas created file there is no AR/Display aspect ratio data
I am of the view that the DAR in 1 & 2, being expressed as a single number instead of a ratio ie 1:1, MMS/VPX are mishandling this single value and using it to select 16:9 as this is the only option that starts with a 1.
The Vegas produced file having no DAR data forces MEP/VPX to use the actual dimensions to determine the AR
@johnebaker I did the Vegas one again at 30fps instead of 29.97fps just so they ae the same, no prob opening it in MMS. Apart from bit rate & file size I can't see any significant difference between the two 🤷♂️
I think it's HEVC-related. A square H264 file from VDub displays correctly. And the HEVC file opens stretched in MEP 2021, so the bug has been around for a while.
Definitely, however with a subtle twist - I have tried various options using Avidemux as filenames, in image below, are what I did.
As you can see, only a recode to HEVC to HEVC gives the correct AR display.
Only the recode imports correctly, I do not know why the recode shows more preview images, all are Progressive encoded, and the frame rates are the same.
. . . . HEVC file opens stretched in MEP 2021, so the bug has been around for a while . . . .
It has been around since MEP 2016 !
Oddball finding - Handbrake displays the AR as 3:3 ???
