Video editing playback (dropped frames/freezes) issue not allowing me to edit precisely. Need to know how to fix this problem with or without purchases?

My computer: HP p6653w Processor: AMD Athlon II X2 250 (3.00GHz) RAM: 5 GB System Type: 64-bit Graphics: Integrated graphics using ATI Radeon 4200 | Monitor: 26" Vizio HD tv

My Problem: Using Magix Movie Edit Pro 2013 Plus (and the latter version "17 Plus"), I am not able to make precise edits due to poor playback with "glitches" and freezing frames. This worsens with AVI formats but still occurs with others (MPEG4). [I'm always working with HD footage]. The video might play properly for an entire second (after pre-loading) before proceeding to freeze and such. Also, these files play fine in other programs, but Magix Movie Edit will playback poorly (even with low settings), and even export bad AVI files that jitter and "stutter." The MPEG will export fine, but not playback well sometimes. This has always been an issue as long as I remember, but I'm starting to use more tracks and effects which makes it harder to avoid.

Are there any simple system improvements I can make to improve video performance or do I need to invest in a new graphics card or perhaps add RAM? If so, what graphics card would be a step up from the integrated graphics I'm running?

Note: I usually keep my system on all day and put it in sleep mode at night. I'm sure an occasional shut down/reboot would help. Let me know if that could be a large part of the problem.

Thanks for reading!

Hi,

Start by checking the 12 suggestions I made here:

Hi

For HD footage the computer is underpowered - Terry's post will help however those recommendations can only alleviate some of the problem - for HD a quad core PC (preferably an Intel processor) with plenty of ram is needed

Are you trying to make cuts etc while the video is playing or using Multi Cam mode?  If so this is not a reliable method for achieving accurate cuts.  If you use this method then you will have to make a second round of edits using, for example, the left/right arrow keys to move through the video object frame by frame.

Not recommended - the computer will slow down over a period of time as memory is consumed and not always released correctly ie memory leaks, free disc space is used up with the Windows page files, temporary Internet files etc.

Better to switch off at least once per day and also perform some regular house keeping ie run a regular disk cleanup - the Windows cleanup tool is sufficient -  to get rid of the garbage that builds up over time.
