Windows 8.1 upgrade breaks some software - and this is not restricted just to Magix software.

MEP 17 is not Windows  8.1 compatible.  If you can get it to run, which looking at that error message is looking unlikely,  you will almost certainly have issues with DVD drive not being recognised.

Time to upgrade to a Windows 8 compatible version.

Had some problems myself with windows 8.1. Managed to solve magix freezing by running in windows 8 compatibility.

Right click you magix icon, select properties, compatibility tab

Click compatibility mode and select windows 8
