Video cleaning - where is it?

terrypin wrote on 4/8/2013, 3:40 AM

Using File > Settings > Keyboard shotcuts I was assigning Shift+X to a command. But I got the message that it was already assigned, to Effects > Video Effects > Video cleaning...

But I can find no such menu item. A search on 'cleaning' in the PDF manual finds several references to 'video cleaning', but within the program itself I can only find audio cleaning.

Nor does the use of Shift+X with a video clip selected do anything.

Same here for MEP 17, MX and 2013

However on my computer Shift + X is for extracting a range in all three versions.

Which keyboard layout are you using? Mine is the default at installation with a couple of changes - I swapped the object editor and trim editor key shortcuts (N and Shift + N)

Hi John,

Thanks for checking. Very curious to learn what this video cleaning is, or if it ever existed in any version!

I'm using an old keyboard setting file, one that I became familiar with years ago. But I didn't have Shift+X assigned to anything. I've now assigned it to Select next object.

Hi Terry

It did exist in MEP14. It brought up a window like the Audio cleaning window, with a double click on the video track, where you could adjust brightness contrast, colour, etc., prior to these effects being accessed through the Media pool tabs. Kinda miss it seeing as those are the most used effects!

What's that, 6 or 7 years? About time Magix updated the PDF manual...

Right Terry.

Looking at your screen shot reminds me of the other thing I found quite handy - the sideways arrow that takes you to the adjacent object and then "Apply from previous object". The new way is more cumbersome.

Hi Terry

 . . . . About time Magix updated the PDF manual . . .

I have checked the manuals for MEP 15 to 17, MX and 2013 and nowhere in the manuals does it say there is a menu item, function or effects panel called video cleaning like the one that was in MEP14.

The term 'video cleaning' is used ( AFAICS ) in a generic way.

Is your keyboard layout file from when you had MEP14?

Cheers

John

Hi John,

That must be the explanation for the keyboard settings message. I vaguely recall a shock/horror reaction years ago when suddenly most of my macros no longer worked. Turned out to be a radical change of just about every MEP shortcut in the list! Apart from the macro issue, I'd grown familiar with many MEP shorcuts that would have to be re-learned. So I've stayed with the old set all this time. Still don't know what prompted such a wholesale revision. Bit like Microsoft announcing that the shortcut for Clipboard Copy was now to be Ctrl+Alt+K!

Re the four hits to 'video cleaning' in the 2013 PDF manual, they seemed rather specific to me, so I went looking for the function, but you're right, it no longer exists.

What features do exist in 2013 that fit into the generic description?

Hi Terry

IIRC the shortcut changes occurred mainly in MEP 15 when the 'new' colour scheme and dialogs were introduced.

Video Cleaning is still the same as those shown in your MEP 14 Video Cleaning pane - now under the Effects, Video Effects option ie Auto Exposure, Brightness, Contrast, Gamma, Colour, Colour correction, Sharpness etc.  Noise reduction has been moved to the Advanced Video settings on the Export and Burn dialogs.

I think the old Noise reduction has been replaced by the bottom 50% of the Sharpness slider.

See page 118 of the PDF:-

Sharpen: The fader allows you to regulate the level of image sharpness or apply a soft
filter.
Apply to: Allows you to set just how much the sharpness settings should be applied
to surfaces or to edges. This enables you to effectively reduce ongoing image
distortions (noise).
