video capture freezes with high settings after 1 and half hours

zachary-goldberg wrote on 4/11/2018, 8:31 AM

i have been working with magix for the past 4 weeks to try to get a windows 10 pro and magix fully updated to capture any tape 2 hours long.

my firewire devices worked fine before the recent windows update. now magix wont capture more than an hour and a half of video before freezing up like a Eskimo on prom night. i have tried everything reinstalling windows 10 did not help.

reinstalling magix

installing legacy firewire drivers

changing page file settings

changing the tape

running it in admin

turning the page file system off

running magix in compatibility mode

enabling dep for all programs

turning off antivirus

adding exclusions for antivirus

none of these things worked not because there is something wrong with my machines or the operating system. but because magix capture is old and hasnt been updated. its failing consistently anytime we play a tape longer than 2 hours and nothing we can do to our machines has changed that fact.

if you have a solution for this please post. if you have this problem please post.

Hi, welcome to the Magix forums.

Which version and variant of MEP (you've chosen MEP as your product but then refer to "magix capture")? Which exact version of Win 10? What capture device are you using? I assume it is firewire based since you mention installing the legacy drivers. What is the detailed spec of your computer (CPU, RAM, HDD, Graphics)?

I regularly capture 2 hours+ VHS tapes to computer, using a Canopus ACEDVio PCI card; although I prefer to use Video Pro X (15.0.5.211) I occasionally use MEP Premium (17.0.2.166) without problem.

As to whether a recent update has done something to affect your firewire drivers, that is entirely possible, but I have a MOTU 8-Pre audio interface permanently connected to my computer via firewire and it continues to work without problem. I actually have two firewire ports on my machine, both using the legacy drivers, since I also use FW to connect various digital video cameras to my computer, again for capturing, again without problem.

One other thought: how much space do you have on the hard drive you are using to store your files?

Thank you for the additional information.

On my computer (specs are in my signature) I have just opened MEP, connected a Canon MV920 Digital Video Camera, using firewire, inserted a tape (I don't have one of 2 hours so can't test that aspect of your problem); footage captured without any difficulty. However, as a matter of normal practice, I don't select the option to record as MPEG.

Also tested with a Sony TRV 725E Digital 8 recorder, again no problem, though as before I don't have a 2 hour tape.

So, I can't really offer you any ideas about how to resolve your problem, other than trying NOT ticking the MPEG option. Just one other slightly random thought, you are using the playback camera running off the mains, and not batteries?

can you test the software by making a standard 2 hour 8 tape. or just captureing blank static. and checking the mpeg option. part of our business model needs mpeg. that should recreate the error. a confirmation would be much appreciated.

Sorry, I don't have any 2 hour tapes and the machines I use are purely for playback (to transfer client footage to DVD). In fact, I know the recording facility on my Sony Digital 8 recorder is faulty, so wouldn't be a fair test.

You say "part of our business model needs mpeg". Can you explain this, or, more accurately, why you cannot capture to .avi and then export to mpeg (?2)?
