I can not seem to record analog using either the Dazzle or Sabrent USB devices. I get nothing from the Dazzle and only get sound from the Sabrent. Any ideas?
All the Dazzle devices I have had in the past are locked to Pinnacle software and cannot be used for capturing in any other video editor.
Is the Sabrent model USB-AVCPT? Which cables and recording option ie composite or s-video in VPX are you selecting.
If using a SCART to RCA connector (yellow/red/white) cable is the SCART plug an In or Out plug -t may have arrows in the moulding indicating a direction - if they are pointing to the cable it is an Out cable, this is the one you should using, if they point to the metal shield of the plug it is an In cable and is used for recording into the VCR, or does it have an In/Out switch on it?
What TV standard (PAL, NTSC) are you capturing and from what device - eg VCR, Hi8, Mini DV camera etc?
If it is a VCR is it a PAL machine capable of playing NTSC tapes or pure NTSC ?
Hello John, First thanks for your help!! So the Dazzle does work with the Pinnacle Studio for dazzle but not with Video Pro X. The Sabrent model USB-AVCPT is recognized by Video Pro X but the picture flashes? I am using the same RCA cables as with the Dazzle. It is hooked up to a VCR using NTSC. The weird thing is when using the Pinnacle Studio for dazzle is defaults to Mp2 but after about 1 minute of recording it starts to loose frames making it unwatchable but if I use the DV setting it works ok but saves it as an AVI and Video Pro X says I need to download a DV25 codec to use it. Quicktime player plays it fine. Go figure??
. . . . Pinnacle Studio for dazzle is defaults to Mp2 but after about 1 minute of recording it starts to loose frames making it unwatchable . . . .
That would suggest the computer is dropping frames as it cannot keep up with the encoding to MPEG 2 - however your Dell should be more than sufficient for recording, did you get the Intel GPU working?
What resolution are you setting for the MPEG-2 recording option?
If it is higher than DV (720 x 480) - there is nothing to be gained - VCR resolution is approx. 330 x 480 for NTSC which would explain why the DV setting is OK.

Definitely puzzling - VPX should import the video without any issues, however the problem may be that the AVI file is the wrong type.
AVI files come in 2 'flavours' Type 1 (A) and Type 2 (B) - VPX can only import Type 2 where the audio is interleaved with the video.
Try converting an AVI file with DVDate to a type 2 (B) file - see this comment and the following ones for more information.
I have the Roxio device and somehow it picked up the Pinnacle drivers. It worked at one time with the Roxio program, which I updated when the computer no longer liked the device. Then, the computer no longer liked that. It wouldn't work with Pinnacle either. Guess what the Roxio device does work with now? VPX.

Depending on how old the device is that would not surprise me - Pinnacle and Roxio are owned by the same company, there may be some commonality between their systems.
I notice that the current Dazzle capture devices are similar to ones I was using 15+ years ago, the Roxio device looks like many other devices doing the same job.
I realized what I can do import the movie using the DV setting, then load it back into the program and export as H.264, that would work. I wish I cold just do that in VPX.
I am surprised that my computer would not handle the MP2 ? Is it because its old technology?
IMHO it is not old enough for it to struggle with MPEG-2 - my old Celeron based PC from years ago captured fine so long as the resolution was no higher than 720 x 576 (PAL).
Did you try the DVDate software on the AVI file - it would be better than exporting as h.264 - avoids recompression again.
. . . . Is there a capture devise specifically made for Magix products? . . . .
There is, it is here, however if it is not available, one of the most popular capture device brands is Terratec - the Grabby in very popular for up to 720 x 576 (480) resolution. I would avoid the cheaper 'odd brand' ones.
