VHS made into DVD

Bigangbo wrote on 9/30/2022, 10:47 PM

Thinking on Magix Studio 2023 or higher versions... My video VHS was copied using a normal VHS to DVD recorder. lt was very old and the copy of DVD not too good. What product will help me make this DVD copy into a better Viewable Movie to a new DVD copy. Also would be great if I could export the music and add back in later after putting in my DAW to get better sound. Unless the program can allow the sound ( my band from long ago recorded on the Camcorder ) to sound better ? Help. Just for personal use , will only use maybe a few times here and there so not looking to spend allot for more than I really need. Not sure if I can play the original VHS anymore just have the copy of it on the DVD>. Have modern Windows PC OS both 10 and 11 . 12 Gig of Ram on both.. plenty of hard drive space.

@Bigangbo

Hi and welcome to the user to user forums.

In my personal opinion, it is very difficult to improve the quality of a video or audio file. You can certainly change how it looks or sounds to perhaps a more pleasant looking / sounding video but it is difficult to add information that isn't there to begin with. A lot will depend on the quality of the original.

There are additional plugins to use within a video editor such as Neat Video which can get rid of grain and noise but may take a skilled person knowing what they are doing to get best results. Or you may try an Artificial intelligence app like Video Enhance AI but results can vary depending on the quality of the material to begin with.

Both programs are quite expensive and need quite powerful machines if you don't want to wait hours to days for the results.

Some restoration may be possible using some of the tools within Magix Movie Studio but personally I find that as much as you gain in one area you may lose in another.

At the end of the day though one user may be delighted with the results whereas another will be disappointed.

It is difficult to give a precise answer as results are interpreted by individuals who may be looking at the end result with differing ideas of what is an 'improvement'.

For me personally it seldom works. I have enough trouble trying to maintain the quality of my original footage.

But that's me. I'm sure others may have different views on the subject.

Speaking of powerful machines you may also want to put your complete computer specifications into this discussion so we can check if your machine is as powerful as it would need to be.

You can find any members computer specifications at the base of any answer they give by clicking on the blue + Signature at the base of each answer.

Thank you. I did give my PC information. I have pretty powerful PCs . I do music recording and have no issues using many plug ins. One PC has 32 gig ram and AMD chip Ryzen version 5 . New laptop Ryzen ver 7 AMD chip 12 gig ram. Now I am a bit more confused. All this software I ask about claim to enhance and or fix video from older VHS converted to digital and even normal digital video from everyday phones or cameras ? Not looking for miracles just better than what I have. Some say can export your music mp3 or waves and import back in after adjusting ?

AAProds wrote on 10/2/2022, 5:33 AM

@Bigangbo

the copy of DVD not too good.

This is pretty subjective. If you can, it would be great if you could post one of the VOBs from one of your DVDs on a file=sharing site such as Google Drive so we can see what you've got (I assume you have "ripped" the DVDs to a hard drive, as you will not be able to do any restoration work with the files on the DVD itself).

All this software I ask about claim to enhance and or fix video from older VHS converted to digital and even normal digital video from everyday phones or cameras

I use Neat Video (as a plugin with Movie Studio) and it is great for reducing noise. Movie Studio has basic colour and brightness correction controls so you can "improve" off-looking colours.

Also would be great if I could export the music

Movie Studio will easily export your sound track (the audio component of your videos) to WAV or MP3 for external editing then return it to your movie. Movie Studio also has sound enhancing features, but that is a black art to me. Others will guide you.

If you're only working with standard definition DVD, you will have no problems with any computer. Neat Video slows things up (because it is resource-intensive) but it is quite tolerable on my 11 year old i5 machine so you won't have any issues at all.

To a certain extent, you're entering the field of the dark arts. I suggest you download the trial of Movie Studio 2023 (perhaps VPX if you're going to be doing a lot of this) and the Neat Video plugin trial and see how you go. It'll be pretty intimidating at first but not impossible.

As I mentioned before, a sample of one of your videos would be great, as we can then give you more guided advice.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

There are two types of access. We need access to download and edit. Remember that it is a copy of your file.

Also, once finished do we have permission to show the finished file or a snippet of it back here to show what can be achieved? and telling you what processes we used? It would also be normal practice for us to delete the file we had once we had used it and not hang on to it. We can also delete it from this topic if you wish once you have seen the results as we do not have the right to keep another persons video files. Once enough of us has the file you can delete it from your Google account as long as you copied it there and didn't cut and paste it to that folder.

Thank you. File is now enabled.

As far as the sound quality goes, in my opinion it is not at all bad. For the generation of the recording it sounds as if a dynamic mic (or mics) were used rather than an early condenser mic. There is a slight roll off of the top end and bass may not be as crisp as a modern recording but I find it pleasurable as it is. The mains hum from the amplifier cabinets was a thing, normally caused by poor cabling from things such as guitars to the pre-amps. That could be removed but I think it will detract from the bass. I will have a look at that. It may need a better noise remover than I have. You also have very stark stage lighting so any attempt to increase the dynamic range may make the shadow areas look blocky. I will leave that job to people like @AAProds and @browj2 who have more experience using things like Neat Video but I will give it a go with the plugins I have to hand.

Personally though I find the video pleasurable to view 'as is' watching playback at a normal HD resolution.

@AAProds @Bigangbo @browj2 @emmrecs

This was completely unexpected.

Correctly configured as well. Not sure all channels have slightly different audio on them though. The sound is coming through as mono in my test setup. At least all the channels are in phase with no DC offset.

@Bigangbo

Did the camera have surround sound capability?

Some restoration may be possible using some of the tools within Magix Movie Studio but personally I find that as much as you gain fillet knives 2022 in one area you may lose in another.

First camera was just a normal 1980 VHS camera and no other mics were used. It is mono . Remember this was 1980 when we did this show at My Fathers Place in Roslyn Long Island NY. It is Just the camera mic. I agree bass n kick drum not really there on audio. One of the issues I was hoping to fix. . I was hoping to get clearer video and a bit brighter video to see us all clearer rather than washed out and really seeing just those 2 on right side where camera was set up . To note yhis was exactly how VHS came out even back then. Never was very well done. It does get better as movie goes on but that is on the 2 other files I have and can upload if helps to have the whole movie ? . That was first part only I sent . I only unlocked google drive not dropbox in case that caused an issue. Thank you for your help.

@Bigangbo

Hi.

I'm not sure what happened with the audio or why MMS opened so many audio tracks. They were all mono.

If there was to be any quality to be gained it would initially be from the original tape played on a better VHS player.

As it is, it had been compressed once but it still looks good to me. I think there is possibly a small amount of shadow detail that could be teased out and possibly some highlights that seem to be blown out have a little detail in them in places if the brightness is lowered a bit. I'm not sure why Jeff and Al could not access them but if they contact me via PM on the site I could send it to them via Wetransfer. I have Jeff's email but not Al's.

They have more experience than me when dealing with analog video enhancement.

I think the base could be brought forward a bit with some light compression around the 60 to 150 Hz range and probably needs a slight lift around 6kHz but not much more that should give the vocals a slight lift and enhance some of the drum kit around the snare and high hat. I think the mics frequency response probably didn't go much above that anyway. There is no real audible tape hiss or bass rumble. For its day and so far away it's quite clean.

Ray.

Do not have VHS tape anymore. All I have is the DVD it was copied to using a VHS to DVD converter recorder. Audio is Mono only see my other posts on that. Thank you.

CubeAce wrote on 10/5/2022, 7:31 PM

@Bigangbo

That's what I thought. Most people if they transferred their tapes early to DVDs probably though they would never had to remaster the tape again. The program picked up that it had more than one sound track because whoever put it to DVD enabled Dolby Digital encoding even though it only shows a two channel recording. (That's normal even for a mono recording).

As I said, I don't consider myself that good at trying to renovate video from what was once an analog tape.

I would trust @AAProds @emmrecs or @browj2 more than myself in that department but I did try to adjust for chromatic aberration because of the strong stage lighting bending the light around sharp edges such as the drum kits chromed stands and then a little sharpening and just a very small amount of HDR Gamma adjustment to reduce the shadow areas slightly.

Audio wise I have only made the following adjustments available in the program

This is my short attempt.

Hmm. The aspect ratio seems to have changed to 3:2. I think it has added bars to the sides. No idea why.

Ray ! It dies look n sound a tad better. If I gave you all 3 parts do u think u can get at very least what you did to whole movie ? The others have not responded yet but every little bit helps. Yhe VHS to DVD was done by another in 1990s before I was involved. So not quite sure exactly if they knew what they were doing. I am searching for original tape myself. So short if I upload to drive do u fell you wish to give a go ? The others as you mention will have assess too. This is only history I have of that band. No other recordings were done. Let me know and I will upload. Others hopefully will give a shot but you did at least move it forward. Thank you.

Hi.

I'm happy to try.

If you don't want the videos to be accessible to all the public that view this site all you have to do is click on my avatar image and give me links to the files via the personal message system. Or to anyone else who has responded. Those alterations can be duplicated and wouldn't take long to transfer and adjust if needed for the other clips.

I have sent a message to your personal space on this site. You can reply or give links from there. To get to your personal space just click on your own avatar. You will see the message section there.

For now though I'm off to bed as I'm based in the UK.
