Just getting started with Audio Cleaning Lab MX Version 18. Have about 600 LPs that I would like to convert to .wav files for conversion to CD. How large a hard drive will I need, and should I use Firewire 800?
Hard drive space required depends on too many factors to say get a particular size drive - the simple answer is get the largest drive within your budget - you can never have too much free space.
Whether to use firewire depends on what you are using to play the LP's - you can purchase USB turntables of variable quality which plug directly into a PC.
If you are using an existing turntable/amp then as a minimum you need a USB2 audio to digital converter and to ensure that you have no problems with data transfer rates do not connect any other non essential USB devices connected to the computer.
In my opinion it is essential that you do not capture to an external USB hard drive. If a USB external drive is the only option, then I would capture each LP to the computers internal drive with the external drive disconnected. At the end of a session capturing, I would then copy the files across to the external drive.
If you can find a Firewire 800 converter then almost certainly you will not run into transfer rate problems as firewire has a much better data transfer rate than USB.
