USB audio doesn't work, MIDI does

TRexius wrote on 7/1/2020, 10:56 PM

I'm trying to configure my Roland FA 07 to Magix Music Maker 2020 Premium via USB 2.0 cable. I can get the MIDI data to transfer no problem, but the audio does not register on the input meter and cannot be heard. My main intention is to record keyboard, guitar, and vocal tracks all in .wav format without using any MIDI tracks. What am I doing wrong? I've been using Magix since V2000 and never had a problem. I'm using a windows based laptop with windows 10

@TRexius

Welcome to the Magix forums.

Does the USB actually output Audio or is it only for MIDI? I've looked at the web page for your keyboard but can find no information about this.

If the USB can transmit audio, did you ensure your track was set for "Audio Rec"? And can MM "see" your audio inputs, i.e. does it know what input source to use?

Yes, USB puts out audio and MIDO from the 2.0 cable.

it is set to "audio rec".When i press "R" in the MM program to bring up the recording settings, the audio line in says "Magix low latency 2016 (1+2)". I cant select the FA 07 from the list because it doesn't show up there. It wants to default to the laptop mic and I don't know how to get it to NOT do that.

What are your Windows audio settings? Have you installed the FA07 Windows driver? With my interface installed I don't actually select it in Magix. I just select an ASIO driver like Magix Low latency (or ASIO4All or in my case the FLStudio ASIO driver). They all work.

not sure which audio settings you are referring to. The windows driver installed automatically when the keyboard was first connected. It shows up in the device manager as working properly. The keyboard is also set to "Vendor (MIDI + Audio)" for the USB driver.

Open the sound settings in Windows (you can right click the volume icon). Mine automatically changes the input and output to my audio interface when I plug it in. When not plugged it it lists the laptop speakers and microphone instead.

Ok, I did get it to play audio and midi sound through the laptop. It registers on the level meter for audio and the little "MIDI" box lights up for that. However, once I hit audio record in the software, no sound, levels, pr waveform is visible. The problem isn't the keyboard or the computer as they are both working properly. There is some setting somewhere in the software that I can't find. Is there a tech support number for this software? The FAQ section does not cover this topic even though there are multiple questions about "USB audio recording not working" in there...

Did you arm the track for audio recording as well as hitting audio record.

TRexius wrote on 7/2/2020, 10:44 AM

Yes

TRexius wrote on 7/2/2020, 10:51 AM

as soon as I try to record audio, all the sounds in and levels in dissappear

TRexius wrote on 7/2/2020, 10:53 AM

both audio and midi can be heard on the laptop until the program is opened. This is a brand new laptop... its practically an air-gaped computer as its only been connected to the internet twice.

I just tried audio recording. Select advanced in the audio options and choose your audio input option (Roland fa07 or however it is listed). Once I did that recording worked.

"Audio options" in Magix or in the computer settings?

Program settings, audio/midi tab, advanced button in the audio playback section. Not in the audio recording settings.

Ok, so I tried thst and didn't see my device. I closed the program and reopened it and the FA06-08 appeared. I selected it and audio did record from the keyboard via the USB 2.0 cable. I could see the wave form but the software is now playing a game of "keep away" with my playback sound. I had to export the track as a .wav and close the program to play it back and hear it. It is recording the audio though. Just need the right configuration for playback now

Graham-Hawker wrote on 7/2/2020, 12:47 PM

Did you disarm the track for audio recording before playing it back? If you don't you won't hear it.

TRexius wrote on 7/2/2020, 12:52 PM

Ahhhhh... rookie mistake! I did read that somewhere on the site. So, yes... it works now... the recording quality is amazing. Ive never recorded audio though usb before. I can't thank you enough for all your help and patients with this.

Graham-Hawker wrote on 7/2/2020, 1:05 PM

You're welcome. I hadn't tried audio recording before so I learned some stuff as well.

I do hope others with the same problem find this helpful also. A lot of what I am trying to do could be done on the FA-07 as it is a very powerful machine, but I am working with other musicians close by and some in other cities on this project. Ive often used MM by throwing in an audio demo track (.wav) on track 1 and use it for simultaneous playback while I am practicing or writing a part. It works great for this! So much better than the days of buying cassette tapes for the 4-track...🙂 Again, much thanks.
