Upgrade / Update?

mojoaudioguru wrote on 4/12/2022, 12:42 AM

So, is the recent update / patch for MEP 2022+ the new conversion to Movie Studio? (21.0.2.138 UPD3) If so, does anyone know what its fixing, exactly? Back in the day, after a patch was installed, it would tell you what was fixed, added, or improved upon. I can't seem to find the page that explains what this patch actually does. It was over 171 mbs, so I can only assume it actually fixed or added something. Also, is there any rhyme or reason for the new name change? What if any, are the benefits or changes, outside of the new name? Can anyone elaborate on this?

@mojoaudioguru

The "name change" has happened but users of MEP will not see any change to this, I suspect, until Movie Studio 2023 is released, presumably sometime later this year. IOW, what you have now (as the product name on your screen) is what you will continue to see until a new full version is released and you decide to upgrade and install it.

Hi

. . . . movie studio platnum on windows 11( is it ready for 11 yet)  . . . .

All Movie Studio versions 18 through to 2023 work on Windows 11.

What type of microphone are you using - eg USB or if a 3.5mm jack, is it plugged into the onboard sound card or are you using an external audio interface?

Hi Jeff.

I can't find on line, any USB guitar cable that is certified for Windows 11. You could try using Windows compatibility mode to allow the inboard DAC of the device to work. If the USB devices show in the Win 11 task bar,try right clicking on the icon and selecting 'Open Devices and printers' and from their select your USB cable with another right click and select 'Troubleshoot' to bring up the Windows compatibility mode.

Do you mean this is an analog 1/4" plug to USB digital converter similar to this?

If so and the device does not appear in the recording dialog option indicated below, then the most likely problem is that there are no Windows 11 drivers installed for the device.

CubeAce wrote on 1/4/2023, 10:40 AM

@jeff-brown8145

The USB end of any similar USB cable actually has an Analog to Digital Convertor in it that needs a Windows driver the operating system can 'see'.

As the driver seems to be a Windows generic plug and play one, maybe this is a question for Microsoft if you can't get the compatibility mode to work. This is a common problem with external sound cards that have their own drivers but never seen this with adapter cables before.

[Edit] This is possibly down to modern motherboards being able to detect and adjust for impedance and voltage on the motherboards audio inputs elevating the need for such a cable. Personally I wouldn't want to use a 3.5mm jack input for such a heavy lead. You could try buying a 3.5mm jack to 1/4" jack socket lead to relieve such strain and see what the result would be if you have such a motherboard.

Hi.

If it is a lack of a generic driver for windows which seems to be the case as none of the leads I looked at had supplied drivers and all such leads quoted compatibility up to Windows 10, then that points to it being a Microsoft problem only resolvable by Microsoft. As I said, most motherboards from at least 2018 onward have inputs that could cope with a guitar input which would in theory make the need for such leads redundant as much as that seems to be bonkers. As Microsoft have laid down compatibility requirements for Window 11 they may not be inclined to do anything about supplying such new drivers unless enough people complain.

There is no real advantage to running Windows 11 over Windows 10 unless you are running a new computer using Intel gen10 processors onward.

Normally there is no harm using either operating system but in this case there seems to be.

The current batch of Magix programs are at home on either operating system but do have an advantage with Win 11 and the appropriate higher end current hardware that would give the 'specified' performance boost.

and windows 11 seams to be the road block i do have a windows 10 computer that works fine with it, i a also hate to go backwards with windows but may have to not just magix programs but several other programs for recording music have fallen into the same roadblock as this. i have talked to microsoft about this but my return with some of this added information and hopfully get this resolved, thanks

Hi

@CubeAce commented that Windows is using a generic driver - I would agree with this however -

. . . . most motherboards from at least 2018 onward have inputs that could cope with a guitar input which would in theory make the need for such leads redundant . . . . .

This I would not recommend - there is a risk of damaging the guitar pickups or the audio inputs - guitars ideally should be connected to a computer through an audio interface designed specifically for this function eg a Focusrite, M-Audio or one of the many other good quality audio interfaces.

What is the make/model of the USB converter device?

Did you get a disc with it that has drivers on it?

. . . .  i do have a windows 10 computer that works fine with it . . . .

What name does the device have when using in program for recording?

Hi Ray

It is worse then that - there are a lot of these 'non descript' conversion cables for many different audio and protocol conversions available, usually with some very unusual or no names that are identical and in some cases fraudulent in that there is no convertor inside them.

Hi John.

I don't doubt it.

In theory, any guitar amp that had a headphone output could be used to plug into a computers line input if it has one. The impedance difference would not be that great and if one is careful turning the volume up, it can be prevented from overloading the line input. My concern is a thick cable as normally supplied with a guitar lead would be too much strain for a 3.5mm jack socket. I actually use on occasion the headphone output from my CD player to go into a second amplifier or my 12 channel mixer with no ill effect if I need to split a feed.

John EB

i was looking at one of those and might get one for that purpose

I've just had a thought.

Windows 10 hides the Stereo Mix feature and disables it as default.

What if the same has happened to the guitar lead interface in Win 11?

To find out go to the sound control panel while the lead and guitar are plugged in.

And see if you can find and enable your device.

Ray.

Hi Ray

. . . . I can't find any audio support entries for Win 11 . . . . .

The page you linked to is a year old and is for driver developers. What were you specifically looking for?

@jeff-brown8145

Hi

AFAICS First ACT were relying on generic Windows drivers for the cable device.

From your previous posts I did not see any confirmation that you had turned on the Windows, Privacy & Security, Microphone, Let desktop apps to access your microhone option.
