My update service expired in January of this year. If I renew the update service now, will the service be effective as of the date I renew for a year?
Yes, the renewal runs for 12 months from the date of renewal if your previous Update service has lapsed, I believe.
If a user renews their service before the previous one has lapsed the new service starts from the date the old one would have expired.
