Is this happening on Windows 10? If so, this most likely indicates that the program is incapable of interfacing with the sound driver for recording, due to a Windows 10 update that would have had some impact on Cleaning Lab's ability to access the sound hardware resources by changing some Windows privacy settings. The relevant settings would need to be modified again to allow the program access, as follows:

- Bring up the main Settings screen within Windows.
- Proceed to the "Privacy" section.
- Click on "Microphone" in the left-hand list.
- Modify the settings here to allow apps to use the microphone.

This should resolve your problems in Cleaning Lab, resulting from the restriction on the access of the sound hardware resources.
