Unable to record computer sound

Debbie-Thompson wrote on 4/20/2023, 1:07 PM

Past versions of Sound Forge Audio Studio I have recorded YouTube audios, but with SFA Studio 16 I have followed the directions multiple times for the settings and I cannot get it to record. Suggestions? What might I be missing? My speakers are connected via USB which I do not know if this is a factor or not. Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

Welcome to the Magix Sound Forge users community @Debbie-Thompson.

My speakers are connected via USB

Is the USB device selected in the Windows sound settings for recording?

Did the USB speaker set-up work with your past versions of SF? If so , it is likily a setting somewhere. Otherwise SF may not be able to record 'what-you-hear' using USB for playback. I would like to check this out, but do have have any USB speakers. Maybe @SP. or someone else can experiment if they have USB speakers.

@rraud my Windows settings show "Speakers... USB Audio DAC Default Device". I am able to use Audacity for the same purpose, but I prefer working with SSF. I do have a brand new gaming desktop and I am waiting for a confirmation about the sound card. Thank you for your input!

"Speakers... USB Audio DAC Default Device".

Try selecting that in the SF menu: "Options> Preferences> Audio> Audio device type/Record"

@rraud I just received a direct email from Magix. Internal sound recording is not available on SFA 16 without an addition program.

SUMMARY: "both Windows and many sound card makers no longer allow the recording of streaming audio the way that Sound Forge Pro and Audio Studio are designed to do it.  The easiest solution here is to use the Sound Forge Audio Cleaning Lab program... this provides a bridge over those new Windows and sound card settings and allows you to record streaming audio quite simply (even simpler than the other SF versions)."

My ego certainly feels so much better because what I was attempting was not possible straight through SFA 16.

What? I never heard of this change in Windows. Can you shows us your Windows sound settings? You can upload an image to this forum with the blue arrow icon above the response text box.

Make a right click on the speaker icon in your Windows taskbar and click on Sounds. In the Sounds window open the Recording tab. There you should enable Stereo Mix or What-U-Hear. If nothing is visible make a right click on the white area and select to show disabled devices.

@SP. Thank you for the inquiry.

I have updated/upgraded my SSFA multiple times throughout the years. Each time I follow this YouTube for directions and how to get the correct setup and it has worked. This time it did not.

I am suspect it has to do with my sound card (brand new HP gaming computer) that just isn't talking the same language. The info I received was directly from Magix so I am going with that.

Here's the YouTube that I followed the instructions from. Even though it's an older version he is demonstrating it's still the same process.

@Debbie-Thompson Ok, this might be somewhat experimental, but you could try the following.

  1. Install FlexASIO-1.9.exe from here: https://github.com/dechamps/FlexASIO/releases/tag/flexasio-1.9
  2. Install.NET 6.0 Desktop Runtime (v6.0.16) from here: https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet/thank-you/runtime-desktop-6.0.16-windows-x64-installer?cid=getdotnetcore
  3. Install FlexASIO.GUIInstaller_0.35.exe from here: https://github.com/flipswitchingmonkey/FlexASIO_GUI/releases/tag/v0.35

Open Sound Forge, go to Options > Preferences > Audio. Select FlexASIO as the driver and click on Apply. Click on Advanced > Configure.

Select Windows WASAPI as the backend. Set buffer size to 1024. Select Speakers as Input Device and Output Device or select your usual playback device (USB Speakers) as the input and output. Then the configuration should look something like this :

backend = "Windows WASAPI"
bufferSizeSamples = 1024
[input]
device = "Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) [Loopback]"
[output]
device = "Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)"

Click on Save to default FlexASIO.toml.

Close the window, click OK to close the Advanced window, click again on Apply and OK to close the Preferences window.

Now I hope you should be able to record all sounds in Sound Forge that are played back on your computer's speakers or your usual playback device (USB Speakers).

It works fine for me and I don't have Stereo Mix enabled (it isn't visible in the FlexASIO Configuration GUI).

Hi @Debbie-Thompson, In lieu of a set of USB speakers, I connected a Zoom F8n field recorder as a USB destination, then went to the SF menu (Options> Preferences> Audio> Audio device type/Record) The USB device was available in 'Windows Classic Wave driver', The internet audio could be seen in the SF record levels meter and recorded. I used my Dell XPS Win 10 laptop, the audio source was from the internet I tested this in SF AS-16 and 17

Thank you everyone for your input, but ultimately via Magix support my solution ended up being using Sound Forge Audio Cleaning Lab 4.

I think my main issue was this "many sound card makers no longer allow the recording of streaming audio the way that Sound Forge Pro and Audio Studio are designed to do it." (per Magix support)

No matter I have this function back! I didn't know how much I used it until it was missing.

"many sound card makers no longer allow the recording of streaming audio"

'Some PCs allow "recording what you hear" natively.. some do not,. All my Dell laptop and desktop PCs allowed it (going back to the Win 95 era with Sound Forge 3). OTOH, I had two Toshiba Satellites that could not 'record-what-u-hear' without a third-party utility... both the Toshiba and Dell PCs had similar Realtek soundcards. I think I used VB-CABLE for the Toshiba PCs, as a work-around.

I had no issues for years until I upgraded to SFA Studio 16.

As long as I am getting the internal recordings all is well.

HOW DO I CLOSE THIS CONVERSATION?

Both SF-16 and 17 (AS and Pro) has VST plug-in issues. Though recording seems to work OK the like the legacy versions.
