hi! yes, this annoying update service thing is just a bug/glitch. it isn't responsible for crashes, it just posts a message when the program is opened. i found a way to remove it using the Revo Uninstaller. just put Revo in Hunter Mode, and when you open SF, drag the Hunter Mode's crosshairs over to the update message and click Remove...choose the safe uninstallation and it will only remove the files of the update service, so the message will disappear without deleting any program files.

Thanks for that. I'll try the Revo program tomorrow. I'm inclined to think that if it's happening often enough then possibly Magix should fix it, but if your solution gets rid of it, then I'll give it a go.

I never install the 'Update Notifier' in the first place.
Revo Uninstall has a pro and freeware versions. The free version is adequate in most cases unless a 'force uninstall' is needed.

If you are using an multi monitor set-up in an extended mode, just drag the plug-in window back to the primary monitor. I am not familiar with Win 11.

I think we're talking about two different things here, as I also do not install the "Update Notifier". Hopefully, the Revo Uninstaller will stop it happening.

I too have the nagging Update Notifier pop up and thanks to a suggestion here I used Revo to get rid of it. I suppose this is Magix way of saying don't expect any more big updates to SF15 now that version 16 is out??? Hence, the abandoned update notifier. :-(

the developers are aware of this annoying thing and are working on getting it removed. i hear it will take a couple of weeks. until then, using Revo's Hunter Mode will help you to identify just the Update Service files and remove them safely.

Hey guys. I had the same problem. As soon as the Update Notifier splashed, I clicked "Show Details" and it showed the chain of where the file was located - I screencapped it and Photoshop would not display it as it usually does, so I had to wait for it to happen again and photographed it. (See attachment) I then followed C:Users\user\AppData\Local\Temp\Magix\UPS\919117726....found that text file and deleted it. Then I went in these 5 0r 6 folders and found the .exe - it was in all but one folder! I deleted the .exe and the .exe log and so far so good! Thanks also to rraud.

PS I also downloaded the REVO free uninstaller but I could not find the .exe anywhere.

The Revo installation usually puts a shortcut on the desktop and is listed the Win 10 Programs Start menu. Otherwise the Revo file path is:
C:\Program Files\VS Revo Group\Revo Uninstaller\RevoUnin.exe

The Update Notifier files are in:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\MAGIX Services\Update Notifier\

@rraud and @John EB- no I'm sorry, my message was not clear - I successfully used REVO to actually uninstall something else that I didn't need and it worked perfectly, I meant I could not find the "UpdateNotfier.exe" - but I did wait until it appeared on my screen again, photographed the location string, navved to it and removed it manually. That's what the photo is above - anyway I had to remove 5 .exe's from 5 different folders! They were in folders seen above in the photograph. So far it has not come back. Thanks again gentlemen.

@rraud - Actually - after finding the UpdateNotifier.exe in 5 folders (as I said above) and deleting them all, the damned thing came back! So I am attaching screencaps of the Revo Uninstaller results as well as the photo I took to see where I'm being stupid. I do not see how to find the Update.exe without clicking on any of the other Magix installations - is that what I need to do? Click on SF15 and it'll open more stuff, or am I in danger of uninstalling SF15????

PS I installed SF15 probably a year ago and this thing never showed up until 2 weeks ago - what the hell?

I think that using another program (Revo) to fix a problem with Magix software, is slightly disingenuous. Surely, the onus is on Magix to fix what is apparently a problem. The program, at least to me, is still completely useable, (the update message is annoying and doesn't inspire a lot of confidence, but the program still works), but if I buy a product (Sound Forge Studio Audio 16 & 15) then there is a reasonable expectation that it should work without having to use another company's product to fix it. After considerable thought, I have elected not to use Revo. Why should I? It's your program, not Revo's. I have bought your program in good faith over a number of years and versions, going back as far as Sony. It's great. Please fix it.

The issue is, as with many programs, the uninstaller can only remove what was logged as installed at completion of the install, it does not know about config/ini files and other items that are created on first run of the program, so cannot remove them, this can be seen as a reason why Revo and other similar programs are available.

Personally I use Revo Uninstaller Pro to install all programs. This has been very useful when I need to test a particular codec which, when uninstalled by its own Windows based 'un-installer', leaves behind over 5200 component files.

These are user to user forums so not a contact for any Magix staff and the software is not ours.

Revo Uninstaller is not a program to fix a problem with Magix software; it is, as its name clearly implies, an excellent software to ensure the complete removal of any and all the program data, files, folders, registry entries etc., associated with almost any program installed on the user's computer. The Pro version, at least, also enables careful logging of the installation of any program and so is invaluable if/when that program needs to be later removed.

It is your absolute right to choose to NOT use Revo to attempt to resolve your problems with Sound Forge; however, as testified in a number of posts in this forum, as well as from my own personal experience, it has on a number of occasions enabled me to fully remove from my computer software that has become in some way "corrupted", usually by my own incompetence!

@rraud Yes Sir, I do. That's how I learned to kill offers to upgrade. Anything else I can turn off? And do you know where the .exe's might be nested? As I said, I found 5 of them, deleted them manually and it came back.

@rraud Here's photos: I just found ANOTHER .exe, and another .txt file that is referred to in the location string...

Sorry about the poor quality, but Photoshop would not grab it as a screencap, but you can see the loaction and progression. When I followed the first string (shot 4, the original day when I found 5 .exe's in the folders ABOVE Magix/UPS and a different .txt file, since deleted) But who knows if they designed it to replicate itself when others are deleted, like a virus does? Not enough of a computer guy to know if they can do that - or why they would.

@Pauly13, did you get rid of the Update Notifier with Revo and using the 'advanced' scan mode to find leftover data?
As I stated, the Magix Update Notifier is installed in C:\Program Files\Common Files\MAGIX Services, If it was uninstalled w/Revo, you would have been prompted to delete them. If the files or folder was manually deleted, registry entries would remain.. The same with leftover AppData files.. though I did not take a look-see.
