Turning a mono track into a stereo track

Chuffey wrote on 10/10/2020, 5:38 PM

I'm using the free version of Music Maker, and recording from a Pro MPA mic pre-amp into a Scarlett 2i2 interface. I can lay down a track ok, but I only get one channel. How can I transfer that to stereo, or at least get the mono coming out of both channels?

@Chuffey

Hi

See this comment for how it is done using the Stereo processor, you will need to check if this is available in the free version.

Thanks John. I went down the path recommended, but there's no stereo processor available on the free version.

Hi

Try this:

Do you have this option if you right click the audio object?

If so ensure the audio object is on a track of its own and you have the wave form displaying, then apply the effect, the audio object will split into 2 tracks, delete the empty one.

You should now be able to Pan the object in the mixer to position it on the sound stage.

I hit the wall again. I split the object into two tracks, which deleted the original track. What had been one track is now two. The first of the two now comes out of the two monitors, which is good. It doesn't display anything visually, though, which I don't get. It's just a straight line, except for the very end, which indicates a big sound (which isn't there in sound). The second of the two is silent, and just shows a straight line visually. I then opened the mixer. I don't understand the rest of the instructions. I don't know what you mean by "object". Is that the track which actually has the sound on it? When I move the panning dial from left to right, nothing seems to happen. I don't know what you mean by "sound stage" in this regard. I can't find any reference to it in Music Maker help.

Hi

See this short video clip

You may find that the you need to upgrade to a version with full functionality, eg convert mono to stereo directly on the audio object and adjust the stereo position without having to use a whole track and get more tracks - if so get the Premium Version, it will save you money in the long run.

Thanks for the reply John. I followed the video instructions, and just deleted the empty track. The remaining audio track sounds ok, but the visual is messed up. It doesn't match the audio, and it was put in a different place from where I actually recorded it. Also I get a flat hand, instead of the finger pointer that your video shows. Is that just how the free version works, and you get the pointer in the versions you pay for?

@Chuffey

Hi

. . . . I get a flat hand, instead of the finger pointer that your video shows . . . .

The mouse pointer changes depending on the various parts of an object it hovers over indicating what the mouse will do when you left click, eg a double headed arrow for move the end or start of an object, an open hand which clenches when left clicking moves the whole object etc.

There is no difference between the variants of Music Maker, however older versions have different icons for the mouse pointer.

Every time I do these steps with changing the mono track to stereo, it gives a strange visual representation, which doesn't actually fit what I recorded. It doesn't even fit in the time slot that I recorded it in. Is there a reason for that?

browj2 wrote on 10/13/2020, 5:45 PM

@Chuffey

For future recording, do you not get the Mono option on the recording parameters screen in the free version?

John- Thanks! That solved the problem. One more question, if you don't mind. How do you check the recording level before actually starting the recording? Or do you just have to do a dry run and listen to it? I can see that the VU meter on my preamp looks fine, but I'd like to check if I'm overdriving the DAW. Can't figure out how to do that.
