Suggestion

nirvanray wrote on 8/24/2013, 6:10 AM

Hello friends,
This is not a question but just suggestions from experts and friends.
Me and my team is making a short movie on an old man and how he is neglected by his family members that lead to his loneliness.
For this made a DVD cover.

I will be thanful if you are kind enough to have a look and please suggest me if I can add or subtract anything.
Regards.

(PS: I have put the title on the begining, made a collage of the man and title, the logo of my movie house and used a quote from William Shakespeare.)

Hi Anirban,

Good use of text and graphics.  It appears that there is someone lying on the bed.  I would shift the frame to the right so that the man sitting is further to the right and you start to see more of the person lying on the bed.  Even if you do not reveal the person on the bed's face, it will make the context a little better.

Hey George thanks once again for the suggestions and motivations.

Do you mean I shift the old man to right, but then wont the black at my left be too much and look ugly.

Also do I need to add more texts to make it look like a cinema poster?

gandjcarr wrote on 8/24/2013, 7:52 AM

Hello Anirban,

Yes, move the old man to the right and expose the person lying in the bed a little more.  You could also maybe change the gradient from grey to black but having a little less full black.  As for more text, without knowing more of the story line, you may want to figure out how to include the words lonely, neglected, and ignored by family just above the sans teeth, sans eyes...line.  Or move An act of love down and put the words just above it mayve in lower case  with a few periods before and after sort of like this

...lonley...

... neglected...

... ignored by family...

Here are the two thoughts I had

Wow George, thanks thanks thanks...

Hi Anirban

I agree entirely with Georges comments - in particular the gradient going from the image to pure black is too strong - I would make the left side more  transparent so that some of the image underneath shows through more.

I would also add a white frame only a few pixels wide to stop the eyes wandering out of the image on the left side as shown below

Dear John,

Thanks for your suggestions.
Just two questions more:
• Do you think if I add some more texts will the cover look nice?
• How did you create the frame?

Regards.

Hi Anirban

. . . . Do you think if I add some more texts will the cover look nice? . . .

No - what George has added is a good idea but no more - if you want more text create an inlay to go in the DVD case if using the CD type cse or if a proper DVD case put the text on the back of the case sleeve as shown in this DVD cover I made a while ago

How you create the white border depends on the software you are using - I used Paintshop Pro X5 as follows:

   - I created a new layer, made a selection slightly bigger then the image and filled it with white.

   - then I modified the selection and shrunk it by 4 pixels

   - Pressed Del to remove the white and deselected.

Hi Anirban,

John's idea is great for a DVD cover insert.  If you want a movie poster, I would go with less text.  If you want a great cover insert, John is on the right track.

Just remember to fit on a DVD case you are going to need the picture to be portrait, not landscape.

Dear George, thanks for the suggestion on opting for portrait, and not landscape.

Dear John, thanks to you as well.

Regarding the white border, is there an option to do the same with MAGIX Movie Edit Premium 18 ?

gandjcarr wrote on 8/25/2013, 6:26 AM

Hi Anirban,

You can probably do it with Magix Photo Designer 7 (wich is free software from the Magix.com site).  I don't use it anymore but I do remember that it could deal with layers and masks so I am pretty sure you could use that product to do what John suggests.  It just means learning a new product.  But that may be just as well seeing how you like to create backgrounds, masks etc.  it is much easier to learn than products like photoshop, and although it is not as sophisticated as photoshop or the product I use (Xara Designer Pro X), it should meet many of your needs.

Hi Anirban

Assuming the image is the same aspect ration as the movie: -

Import the image to the timeline and reduce is size by 8 pixels in height and width - Movement Effects, Size/Position  - you need to uncheck Maintain aspect ratio - the amount of distortion is minimal - or use  Section to crop the image by the required amounts, adjust the top and left position as necessary to equalise the borders

Right click the image and set the background colour to white or the colour you require as shown below

The result of the above applied to a movie clip with a red background (so you can see it here)

On video

Aaaaagh - why does my video get squashed !!!!!!
