Subtitles

Well friends,
Apologies for the question that is not related to editing.
I just want to find out how do I get subtitles of movies that are not in English. For example how do I get the subtitles of a film which is French or Italian?
I do have a lot of collections of classics but cannot watch them on my lappy because they don’t have English subtitles.
Yes I know movies, love and human emotions have no language; yet seriously it will be great if someone can advise me how to watch these movies with subtitles.
Where do I download the subtitles from and then how do I configure with the movie.

Hi,

Regular subtitle must be created by the author, when we edit a video we include a text subtitle in any language we want this is call a closed caption on TV check on the movie player if you have CC activated most of the time is in English sometimes is available in other language. The new way like in YouTube English speaker can generate automatically this CC, another great function is text to speech that means a common text can be generated in voice text. Only few software can input subtitle directly in many language.

Some DVD have the option to turn on subtitles in the menu. These discs have the subtitles on the DVD in two seperate files - a .idx file which contains an index of the subtitles and the time at which they should appear, the second file - a .sub file - is the text of the subtitles.

I would suspect that if you do not have the option to turn on/off subtitles then they are not available on the disc.

AFAIK there is nowhere you can download subtitles from for a given film, and if you could you would have to rebuild the DVD structure and menus to get the options.
