Stretching a set of keyframes

terrypin wrote on 6/13/2013, 5:05 AM

I want to 'stretch' some KFs across the entire duration of an object, instead of leaving a gap as I originally did.

Or for better quality: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4019461/MEP2013-StretchingKFs.jpg

I thought I'd achieve that with the following steps:

1. Disable the 'Combine effects...' option.

2. Reduce the length of the object until the KFs filled it,

3. Enable the ''Combine effects...' option.

4. Increase the length of the object again.

But that doesn't work. The KFs return to their initial positions.

--------------------

I know it can be achieved using the Edit effects curve... dialog, but what's wrong with my approach above?

Hi Terry

A bit strange that. It appears that it always tries to keep the effect length in the same proportion to the length of the clip, for whatever reason! The "edit effects curve" is the way.

Thanks Peter.

I'm strongly inclined to think it's a bug. With 'Combine effects...' enabled, increasing the size again should retain the relative positions of all KFs. Indeed, isn't that essentially the definition of the feature?

And if I'm right it's been there forever - well, I found the same in MEP16 and 17.

But anyone else able to explain the behaviour as intended design please?

Hi Terry

Bug ? - maybe or maybe not - I think the KF are linked to the initial length of the clip when you start adding the KF - I would suspect that there position is calculated as a % age of the clip length to allow for the Combine effects ...  to work..

Try this which works for me

  - Save the KF as a Video Effect

  - Remove the effect from the clip

  - Shorten the length of the clip

  - Insert the saveed video effect into the clip

  - Select the Combine effects...

  - Stretch the clip to its full length

Thanks John. Although that works, it's slower and more complicated than using the Edit effects curve... dialog. And your step Shorten the length of the clip involves some guessing, as the KFs are no longer present.

Hi Terry

. . . step Shorten the length of the clip involves some guessing . . .

Agree if you do not make a note of the location of the last KF.

Cheers

I'm strongly inclined to think it's a bug.

Reported to Magix who have accepted it's a bug. For submission to developers.
