Does the VST startup search stop SF from fully launching, If so, it takes some detective work to ID the offender that causes the 'hang' behavior

I am not aware of a specific registry tweak, nor am I familiar with the AS (Audio Studio) versions. However the VST startup search can be disabled in the SF Pro's "Internal" menu, which is normally hidden. Change FALSE to TRUE in the "Skip startup VST grovel" entry. Be aware that new VSTs will no longer be loaded or available if this setting is changed..

I do not know if the setting exists or where to change it in AS.

I've never even tried it in AS, so I don't know if there is the capability.

DGN wrote on 10/21/2020, 11:22 AM

I've realized how insignificant this issue really is. AS scans the VSTs with no problem it just takes a few seconds longer to start up and as I don't plan to add any new VSTs I thought it would be nice to be able to disable scanning for VSTs until needed. Surprising how impatient I can be! :) Thanks for your help!

Well, that was easy. 😄

I've found a solution for Sound Forge Audio Studio 14 (not Pro).

  1. Locate the application folder, mine is:
    C:\Program Files\SOUND FORGE\SOUND FORGE Audio Studio 14.0\

  2. Create a backup folder there, and name it as you want, i.e:
    "_MOVED FOR FASTER START!!!"

  3. Move these two files to the newly created folder:
    audio_plugin_scan_server
    audio_plugin_scan_server_x64

SF Audio Studio now starts in about 6.5 seconds, instead of 20-something seconds.

I just tried this in SF Pro 14(there are actually more files with either vst3 or vst2 types)...moved them all into a new folder. The issue then becomes multiple pop-up windows during startup that say that it can't find those files and asks if you want to retry or continue.

I would say, if you can find the plugins that are slower to scan(waves is a huge culprit), you can get the vst scanning process pretty quick.

Hello!

I am using Sound Forge Audio Studio v15 and I hate the fact that it takes time for the program to launch because it scans for plugins at startup!

I have deleted the folder paths to the 3rd party VST plugins, but it still scans for plugins.

Is there a way to turn this stupid scanning process off completely?

@Endre-Nagy Only by moving or blocking the scan_server exe files. But then you'll get error messages on each start like already mentioned. Depending on the number of VSTs this might be faster though.

Unfortunately, that is not a good option either.

In the past, I've been using cracked versions of Sound Forge from the Sonic Foundry & Sony era, but this issue didn't exist back then.

Evolution, I guess...

@Endre-Nagy Older versions had the /NOVSTGROVEL switch that stopped VST scanning. If I remember it correctly stopped working some versions ago. But since you have the older version 15 it still might work.

Thank you!

I'll give it a try.

I did add the /NOVSTGROVEL text in the Target, but Sound Forge is still scanning for VSTs.

The only thing that helps by a bit was going to: Options > Preferences > VST Effects > Remove path (of all VSTs).

Now, SF boots in about 6 seconds.

Yeeey! I guess.

@Endre-Nagy

The only thing that helps by a bit was going to: Options > Preferences > VST Effects > Remove path (of all VSTs).

The obvious downside to this is that you now have no VSTs available to use in SF. Is that what you want?

In an earlier post you mentioned In the past, I've been using cracked versions of Sound Forge. That admission is NOT going to endear you to Magix or fellow-users so can you confirm that your current installation is fully legitimate?

Hello!

Yes. My current Sound Forge Audio Studio v15 is absolutely legitimate.

Endre-Nagy wrote on 7/4/2023, 4:05 AM

There is another annoying thing about Sound Forge Audio Studio v15:

Everytime I open the program, if I am connected to the internet, I get the following message:

"Renew the update service".

I hit: "Start installation", but nothing happens. Nothing installs.

Still, next time I open the program, I get the same message again.

Question:

Is there a way to disable this notification?

Hi @Endre-Nagy, This has been commented on and solved few times.search this forum.. (Find) "Update Notifier" Basically, just uninstall the "Update Notifier" application which is separate from main Sound Forge app. As I recall the application is in C:\Program Files\Common Files\MAGIX Services

Hello!

No, that did not work.

(In the mentioned location it's only 1 folder named: "System", which has inside 1 file named: "mgxasio_x64.dll").

However I did find the solution:

1. Go to:
   C:\Program Files\SOUND FORGE\SOUND FORGE Audio Studio 15.0\UPS

2. Delete this file:
   Service_rel_u_x64_vc16

PS: I hope that this will help someone else too.
