Hi,

Why doesn't Magix release the MS2023 road map? It would be transparent for the customer to identify whether or not there was attention to a problem or bug previously reported! I downloaded the MS2023 version for evaluation. I am a vegas MS 17 platinum user and considered that my profile fits the line of the average user. I am looking for information about what to expect in these steps that involve discontinuity and reuse of what was good or bad !

Thanks

@Roberto-Goncalves Hi, whatever your intentions pls note Vegas MS 17 platinum & Magix Movie Studio 2023 are totally different programs. MS2023 is not an upgrade from Vegas MS 17 platinum.

Magix MS used to be Magix Movie Edit Pro (MEP), it's never had anything to do with Vegas

& Vegas MS 17 platinum's closest relation now is Vegas Edit or Vegas Pro ( Edit & Pro are same program basically), essentially it's a very similar program to Vegas MS 17 but with a few more functions,

@Roberto-Goncalves

Hi,

Other than what @Former user mentioned, if you are a normal user, as you say, wanting and needing more content, templates and some tools like Travel Maps, then Magix Movie Studio may be the way to go. If you want more advanced editing features and the look and feel like Vegas Movie Studio was, then look at going to Vegas Pro.

Just remember that using Magix Movie Studio will require some learning as many things are not done the same way as in Vegas.

Perhaps you can give more details on the types of videos that you make and how detailed you expect tools to be. For example, do you need detailed compositing or regular compositing? Do you need detailed motion tracking? Do you need to export for broadcasting? Do you need more templates like titles, transitions, intros & outros, movie & editing templates, collages, themepacks, movie looks, design elements, image objects, etc? Do you need more content, such as music and sound effects? Do you need to create DVD/BD's?

As for:

It would be transparent for the customer to identify whether or not there was attention to a problem or bug previously reported!

there are not many software companies that share bug lists with customers. Magix does this to a certain extent with Samplitude Pro X/Sequoia, but not their other software. So, you just have to depend on some of us here who try to track bugs and whether or not they get fixed.

Often with patches, we see bug fixes that we never noticed, but not always bugs that we have raised with Magix. Right now, there are not many bugs and most normal users probably wouldn't find them. Magix did a pretty good job between Movie Studio 2022 and 2023 and to date.

Lastly, do not consider Movie Studio basic, only Platinum or Suite. Basic is missing many features that most of us consider as essential. The difference between Platinum and Suite is only additional third party software/plugins. The program is the same.

Also, there is Video Pro X which is the same program but with many more features.

Hi John CB and Gid! Thanks for the content! I am aware that they are different products!
John: I saw your series of very didactic videos you posted on Youtube, which helped speed up on how to do the simple things! Very Good this and if you keep doing it you will be helping not only Magix, but many more in need, like me! From 2020 to 2021 I realized that the Vegas people have broken away from the regular user versions and naturally concentrated their efforts on the professional user. My profile does not require much because my videos are more tutorials to document the software I develop (I am a software developer for 30 years / pascal, java and c++) and family videos (no social media). My goal is to seek more information specifically about where Magix developers are finding problems. Making video with a simple, bug-free tool is key. So the goal with the question I posed was to gather information about where MS today is looking for focus! Whether on the interface or on the engine since the prerequisite is low! (Today in Vegas Pro/Edit the minimum is 16 to 32GB ram and in M MS starts with 4GB) In a test with 2 minutes video, Vegas MS 17 used 90% cpu and 800MB ram, against 20% cpu and 1600MB ram testing in Magix MS. So the differences are not only in the visual paths, but in the engine as well!
Regarding the release of the bugs and roadmap, it is the year 2023 and nobody is fooling anyone! I understand that the greater the veracity, the better the transparency with the relationship! After all, who doesn't make mistakes?

Thanks

@Roberto-GoncalvesHi, I've used MEP (Movie Edit Pro) which is now MMS2023 (Magix Movie Studio) since 2004, & although I own & have tried out other more 'professional' editors I still use MMS for as you say basic editing, it's got a good strong engine that will pay UHD/4k clips no prob & export is fast, in fact one of the fastest I know, but as with any editor add a few fxs playback & export time does slow a bit. it's also very stable.

You mention CPU use, without going into too much detail software companies tend to focus on using the GPU to do a lot of the work, simply because those are parts that are easier to swap/upgrade on a PC, & they've also got room for development,, Some software's require a decent amount of RAM for caching of prerenders which help with smoother playback,,

can you click your icon at the top of this page - My Profile & fill in your Signature with the full name of your CPU, GPU & amount of RAM, also inc the Windows & Magix version, this will then show at the bottom of your comments,

Hi Roberto and welcome to the user to user forums.

My first question would be why do you want to upgrade from your current program?

I have among other editors Vegas Movie Studio 16 and it runs just fine and uses less computer resources than any of the newer programs so what is it that you need now that requires changing the program you already have for basic editing?

The newer programs can now edit 8K 10 bit footage and even if you do not use such material the program needs more powerful components to run the program than an earlier version would have to have to give the same responsiveness for a given resolution and frame rate. It's not that the newer program will not run on your system but the experience may be less positive than you were used to. You may need to use proxy files or increase your ram depending on the resolutions and codecs you expect to use.

Hi

To add to @CubeAce comment:

. . . . You may need to use proxy files or increase your ram depending on the resolutions and codecs you expect to use. . . . .

Does the laptop (or NUC ?) have a Nvidia or AMD GPU as well as the Intel iGPU?

With the UHD620 GPU you do have hardware acceleration for h.264 (AVC) and h.265 (HEVC).

I agree re increasing the amount of RAM.

The use of Proxy files will mitigate some some 'issues' you may have without them eg:

  • HEVC video editing performance will be worse than AVC - the HEVC format system demands are much higher

  • If your videos have some complexity eg Picture in Picture and the source video is FullHD (1920 x 1080) or higher resolution you may see lower performance.

  • If you are using and editing from an external USB 3 drive, this will affect the editing experience, using proxy files is highly desireable.

Hi,

Every 3 years or so I try to upgrade to a new video editor version. I started in video editing with PowerDirector version 12, 13 and then closed in version 15 because the biggest problem became in the interface that in my understanding offered little speed to create videos and use the features it offered. But it was good for rendering.
I migrated to VMS 15 and then to VMS 17 and naturally I am in the dilemma between going to VEdit 20 or to another editor. What is the problem I face? VEdit 20 has many features to offer but I will use few as it requires too much memory for my profile

I consider it very important in a (simple) video editor to store history that helps the user in re-editing! As in the example below!

(1) I configured VMS 17 to display in the thumbnail the instant of the event (object)
(2) I added a video to the empty project and by the configuration I made, the editor started
to display the instant
(3) I navigated to the 12 seconds instant
(4) cut the video and moved it to the beginning of the track
saved the project! So when I want to know in a long time, which instant a certain video
in the project was cut, it will help me for a possible reuse. I consider this important
in saved projects.

Does MMS 2023 have this feature?

Thanks!

Yes and no, the cut information is saved in the project file, however though not on the object on the timeline the info can be found in the Object trimmer as shown below, .

Hi,

Interesting. I never thought of something like that and don't recall anyone ever asking for it or needing it.

To clarify what you have: in Vegas MS you have a setting that gives the time at various points along a clip. If the clip has been trimmed, the first time indicated shows the time from the true beginning of the clip to the trim point.

No, MMS not have that information, at least not like that.

However, there is an Object Trimmer that has that information and much more:

The timer at the left is how much has been trimmed in hh:mm:ss:frames. The timer at the right hand side lets you know how much material that is remaining to the end of the object, whether trimmed or untrimmed at the right side.

You can go from clip to clip using the next and previous arrows.

Video Pro X has more information in the Project Temp Folder but you have insert each trimmed clip into it. It has Media start, Media end, Media duration and more.

I see that John EB beat me to it.

Be aware that if you like re-editing you will not be able to re-edit old Vegas projects in the Magix version. All it can do is import the clips themselves in the correct order. I'm not even sure how accurate the importing would be.

Backwards compatibility is one of the many problems associated with upgrading a video editor over a few generations. If it is just cut and shunt then the problems are negligible but specific types of cross-fades or other effects may no longer be supported.

(1) right-click access on menu does not display object primmer
(2) in the main menu keeping the focus on the audio, also does not display too
Now for an expert like you who has used some shortcut key, the object trimmer is displayed in the menu!
How did you know that this shortcut would also work
to access the object trimmer?

Well then I decided to learn more about the MMS 2023 and decided to purchase it. Not because it costs less, but because it has more to do with my profile. After a few days of testing, studying, I understood the basics equivalent to what I used with VMS 17. The main reason was the discontinuity. Why didn't I go for the VEdit20 version? Because it offers many tools that I will not use and thus I would be investing more than necessary.
