Split Tracks like the Old Version

Brandon-Lemky wrote on 4/3/2024, 4:39 PM

Is there any way to split tracks seamlessly like in the older versions? I don't really edit videos much so i just finally upgraded to 2024 from 13 lol, but i don't like how T splits the tracks in 2024. Is there a way to split it so it doesn't "duplicate" the track to the side, but rather just cuts it cleanly while keeping the ends the same length?

Hopefully I'm being clear, not quite sure how to describe what i want, i'm sure anyone who's used the older versions knows what i'm talking about haha

Hi,

Ummm, nope. T splits the object, not the track (tracks cannot be split), and the split is clean, there is no duplication. If the object (video or audio) is 10 seconds long and you split it at 5 seconds, you have the first 5 seconds at the left, the second 5 seconds at the right.

If you want to remove the part to the left of the playback marker, then use Z, to remove the right part, use U. To close the gap, first go into mouse mode for a single track (8) or all tracks (7) (don't forget to go back to single object mouse mode 6).

Brandon, as you have found, the 2024 version is quite different from the (I'm assuming) Vegas Movie Studio 13. That's because they are totally different programs. Sony shut down Vegas Movie Studio and when Magix bought the Vegas brand it renamed Magix Movie Edit Pro as Magix Movie Studio. Sneaky, I know.

The upshot of that is you'll find Magix to be quite different, but it is still a generally great program and you will be able to achieve good results with your editing.

@browj2 John has some great tutes in the Tutorial section (linked at the top of the page); I'd suggest you watch those to get an idea on the revised workflow.

And if you are still stuck, feel free to ask us for help.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi

There is a list of tutorials with direct links here.

. . . . Sony shut down Vegas Movie Studio and when Magix bought the Vegas brand it renamed Magix Movie Edit Pro as Magix Movie Studio. . . .

Not quite, in a nutshell:

  • 2016 - Magix bought the Sony Creative Software division - renamed to Vegas Creative Software

  • 2021 - VCS diviison announced they were stopping development of Vegas Movie Studio, the last version being VMS 17 in order to concentrate on Vegas Pro - see here.

Magix released a version of Movie Edit Pro, calling it Magix Movie Studio which could 'import' VMS project files, however the crossover was not handled well.

Importing VMS project files is restricted to basic cuts only, no effects.

  • 2023 - Magix Movie Edit Pro rebranded to Magix Movie Studio

I did not mean track, I'm talking about splitting the CLIP, forgive me for using the wrong term. I understand it's a clean split, but i don't like how it pushes everything to the side. In 13, you'd just press the button and it would create a line down the track, not push everything to the side

Like this, at first i thought it was duplicating the clip. Why does it split it and push it to the side like that? Is there no way to make it give it a clean cut like it did in the old program, keeping the clip in the same spot on the tracker, but splitting it into two?

Sorry for the late response, I didn't get notifications, but i feel like everyone who responded didn't know what i was asking lol

Ah, thank you guys! I'm glad it was so simple! And I'm glad it seems to more or less function in the same way as the one i bought 9 years ago haha.
