SoundForge 13 Pro cannot read/save mp3 format files

I recently installed SF13 Pro on a new computer (Windows 10), and have lost the ability to read mp3 files or save mp3 files.
I’ve rebooted several times, tried to drag and drop, made sure .mp3 was an audio format I’d selected to associate with SoundForge, etc.

Other applications have no problem with the same mp3s, and these are audio files I’d created myself, so it’s not a DRM issue.

When I try to open a folder with mp3s in it, with the “all files” option, mp3s don’t appear in the folder (there’s no “mp3” filetype option either); when I try to drag&drop it shows a circle with a slash through it and won’t let me drop; when I try to save a WAV or something as mp3, there’s no .mp3 file type in the drop-down list.

SoundForge 13 Pro worked fine on my old laptop.

Is there a patch or something to add the missing functionality?

If this issue has been addressed, could it be added to the FAQs and circular “support” options on the site?

Is Magix Tech Support ever really open? How do I contact them?
I’m in the middle of a big project and not being to open my mp3 samples (one of my field recorders only used that format) is slowing us down. I’d be happy even knowing a good 3rd party app that would do high-quality and reliable conversion.

Thanks!

Hi!

You should be able to resolve this by opening the program, then clicking:

File > Reset all preferences and cached data

Then close and reopen the program. Try that and see if it works.

Thanks!

Welcome to the Magix Sound Forge forum @Arn-Poe

If the aformetioned reset does not work, you could uninstall Sound Forge with a third-party uninstaller that can remove leftover register entries, folders and other obsolete data, then reinstall.

Otherwise, as a work-a-round, render PCM <.wav> files. Then encode with a third-party MP3 encoder. I like the stand alone WinLAME encoder which can batch process, sounds as good, is faster and has more options than the Fraunhofer encoder in SF. The WinLAME RC3 edition offers even more encoding options by modifying the presets script file.

Thank you. The reset option did not work; I will try to uninstall and reinstall SF to see if that helps. If it does not, using the LAME encoder sounds like a good option.

If you choose to uninstall/reinstall, Revo's Uninstall is highly regarded Both versions (free and pro) work well.

I did finally uninstall and reinstall SF (manually), and it is finally recognizing mp3s.
Thank you!
