Sound Starts to Crackle/Distort

Apologies if this question has been asked somewhere before but I had a look and couldn't find anything. When I first start-up Music Maker 2019 Premium Edition the sound is fine, but after using for a while adding new tracks with new instruments the sound starts to crackle/distort and the only way to resolve the problem is to Quit the programme and then go back in. This happens on both my laptop and my desktop. Any clues how to fix the problem please? I use my desktop most and it is Processor: Intel(R) Prentium(R) CPU 4405U @ 2.10GHz 2.11 GHz. Installed memory (RAM): 8.00GB (7.88 GB usable). System type: 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor. Pen and Touch Screen. Lenovo Windows 10.

@daisy-jones

The symptoms you describe suggest strongly that the audio buffer of whichever output you are using is becoming "overloaded" and simply cannot handle the data throughput needed.

Can you tell us which audio driver you are using? If it is an ASIO or WASAPI one, e.g. Magix Low Latency, go to Program Settings>Audio/MIDI>Audio Playback>Advanced and try increasing the buffer size.

Let us know if that doesn't help or you cannot access the buffer size settings.

Thank you Jeff ... I am using ASIO and I have increased the buffer size as you suggested. Hopefully, and keeping everything crossed, that will fix the problem!!

@emmrecs ... thank you for that hint. I've had the same problem for years with recent versions of Sound Forge Pro 10, 11, 12 and 13 (the latter in trial mode). It always happens after long use, even today. I've just gone into Options/Preferences/Audio - Advanced and upped the buffering. I hope that will help. Thanks again.

@daisy-jones @condex

Glad to be able to help, and thanks for the feedback.

If increasing the buffer size does not help, do post back with full details of how many tracks, any effects etc., as well as full details about your actual audio interface.

There is one downside to increasing the audio buffers that you do need to be aware of: if you are using the different apps in any sort of "multitrack" environment, where you have already a certain number of tracks recorded and then playing back in parallel, increasing the audio buffer can lead to loss of synchronisation between those pre-existing tracks and any new track(s) you are trying to add, essentially because the "new" track is being "delayed" by the larger buffer size before it is actually written to disc. Ideally, for multitrack overdubbing, where exact synchronisation is vital, the buffers should be as small as they can be without introducing the crackles etc. that were the start of this thread; for mixdown large buffer sizes are fine.
