SOUND FORGE – What features do you want us to develop?

MAGIX_Redaktion wrote on 4/12/2017, 9:35 AM

Dear community,

As mentioned in this post, we are very proud to continue the development of SOUND FORGE Audio Studio and SOUND FORGE Pro for Windows. We know, we are continuing a big legacy but before we do that, we wanted to ask for your input.

What do you think should be in the new version? Which features would you like to have included in the software? Tell us what you think and perhaps we will implement requested functions. Now is the time to be heard!

The more requests we get for a certain function, the more likely it is that we will consider it for development.

Best regards,
Mathias

- Return the 'Record' and 'FX Chainer' architecture to the previous GUI (SF-10 and before), or at least as a 'classic style' option.

- VST-3 support.

Improvements to batch processing such as plug in support and a preview function.

Please don't change the way the FX chain works, now that I am used to it.
But I would like the following:
Basic spectral editing like in MAGIX Audio would be nice and useful for restoration tasks.
Random positions of the meters would be very appreciated - probably handled like an effect.
Tools and options for mid / side processing.
Better de- and encoders.

I would like a new acid pro with the new sound forge... [wishfull thinking]...

High regards for opening the question.
I will recall a thread from the old forum where it was linked an article about which Editors' features are relevant (and their distinctions with DAWs).
http://forum-archive.magix.info/showmessage.asp?messageid=939901

At that occasion I pointed out features that Soundforge 11 was needing, every day more so.
In priority order:
*1 Processing power. SF11 works in 32bit length, whereas at 2017 most all the rest of audio software does it in 64 bits. There's latency difference 64bit word length and the access it allows to comparatively massive quantities of RAM, (versus the 3,5GB max limit that 32 bits imposes).
*2 capacity to run 64bit plugins.
*3 multi CPU, multi-threaded optimized operation. This is absent from SF11.
*4 restore the flexible+accessible plugin administration capacity. Surprisingly SF11 reduced the functionality of the plugin chain compared to SF10.
*5 capacity to run VST3 plugins.
*6 GPU assisted processing.

64-bit support, K-Metering, better analyser, eq-match function!

I've found with the update of Waves 9.91 some plug-ins have become incompatible and not supported by SoundForge Pro 11 and Waves has expressed that they no-longer support Vegas Pro. I'd like to see SoundForge's vst support to allow the use of the new and future versions of Wave plug-ins.

1. Make it compatible with other Magix video nle's Movie Edit Pro Plus/Premium and Video Pro X so that it can be used as the external audio editor, take the wav from the timeline, edit in SF, save the modified file and return to the nle and the wav is now modified on the timeline, as can be done with Music Editor 3 and Audio&Music Lab Premium.

2. Make it compatible with Magix DAW's like Samplitude and even MusicMaker - able to take an object from the DAW and edit it in SF, returned back to the DAW.

2. +1 for the spectral editor - but please make it the more advanced one than the AML version, preferably the one that comes with Samplitude Pro X Suite.

3. Fix up the VST lists so that it is easier to see all of the ones installed, not just favourites. It took me quite a while to figure that one out.

4. Give the UI a facelift.

5. Add in a few of the Magix essentialFX, like those in AML.

I am a blind Sound Forge user, so hope that the product
remains accessible as a keyboard user.

Also, it would be great to have native DSF-DSD editing
capability. I use a Sony PCM-D100 which records to DSF, so it would be helpful
not to have to convert files before editing them.

FX chainer. Please keep the option to use as spot effect(fx favourites menu) but also bring back the old style live chainer window.

support for storing presets for vst plugins

64bit?

Scripting: a way to control crossfades when applying effect or plugin chain to a selection from a script. (i could not find a direct way for this, sorry if it already exists)

david-osborne wrote on 4/27/2017, 3:25 PM

integrated spectral editing please!

david-osborne wrote on 4/27/2017, 3:27 PM

FIR filters

david-osborne wrote on 4/27/2017, 3:42 PM

integrated preset manager. Ability to archive multiple FX chains to package( does not work properly in old version)

Nick_Hope wrote on 4/29/2017, 6:56 AM

- VST-3 support

- x64 version

reberclark wrote on 5/3/2017, 12:57 AM

64 bit support.

Sudormrf wrote on 5/3/2017, 4:51 PM

all the above 😃

Add in Lua scripting support

I wouldn't mind seeing comping lanes for each change, so I could A/B the current and a couple steps back of the current sample.

Hi everybody,

We are so happy to see how active and passionate SF fans are. I will pass on these feature requests.

Thank you all for your feedback and keep it coming!

john-welsman wrote on 5/9/2017, 2:02 PM

Mathias, happy to be considered for beta testing, especially with regard to its accessibility for blind screene reader users like myself.

TR_Mala wrote on 5/12/2017, 11:33 PM

Some smaller features I'd like to see:

  • more options to customize look and feel
  • ability to back-up window layout, icons, keyboard, presets etc. into a single file
  • integrated update feature
  • ability to group/nestle custom presets under/within one another for users who have several dozen presets
  • ability to stack window tabs vertically in the workspace to minimize horizontal scrolling when multiple files are open
  • icons for iZotope and third-party plug-ins
  • updated native effects

Hello,

I am also a blind Sound Forge user and have been using the product from about V4.5. I couldn't do my audio work without it! All the keyboard shortcuts combined with the responsive audio features make it easy to use.

For example, it gives me the ability to tell where the cursor is in a sound file simply by pressing space or ENTER for play/pause. Using the I and O keys to mark a selection is a must have. I also use the "Preview Cut/Cursor" and "Pre-Roll To cursor" features all the time.

So, keeping Sound Forge accessible is the one thing I would absolutely encourage you to keep in mind for the next release and future versions.

I already wrote a post (above) about wanted features that many - at the old forum - were wanting for quite a long time, several years now.
However at 2017, there are other developers that have greatly impacted the workflow and available tools at our disposal. I am talking about very effective and powerful features that, in addition to the ones mentioned at previous posts, constitute a remarkable example for Soundforge developers to advance forward.
And no, it is not needed to cite exotic, artificial-intelligence or unique based features, like Melodyne's or the recent machine-learning ones.
I am pasting here the base features list that mostly a single (but extremely able) developer is capable to build into his near to 100 plugins:

Meldaproduction key features

  • Advanced user interface on the market - stylable, resizable, GPU accelerated
  • Dual user interface, easy screen for beginners, edit screen for professionals
  • Unique visualization engine with classic meters and time graphs
  • Unique temporary gain feature
  • 32 multiparameters
  • M/S, single channel, up to 8 channels surround processing...
  • Automatic gain compensation (AGC)
  • Adjustable up-sampling 1x-16x
  • MIDI controllers with MIDI learn
  • 64-bit processing and an unlimited sampling rate
  • Extremely fast, optimized for newest AVX capable processors
  • Global preset management and online preset exchange
  • Supports VST, VST3, AU and AAX interfaces on Windows & Mac, both 32-bit and 64-bit
  • No dongle nor internet access is required for activation
  • Free-for-life updates

There is a small option I'd like to see added. I like how the newer versions of SF have tabbed windows. Those are handy, but the problem is that the tabs apparently get their data from the file's meta-data. So if I have a wav file and an mp3 file with the same INAM tag, the two tabs will appear the same, and I don't necessarily know which one's the wav and which one's the mp3. I wish there were an option to have the tabs display title or file name (so I can see the file extension).

First off I am delighted that an update to Sound Forge is in the works. Long time user.

Sound Forge can currently read ALAC files. Could the ability to write them too be added?
