Sound Forge Pro needs a way to keep preferences when upgrading!

Teles wrote on 8/5/2018, 5:07 AM

Sound Forge 12.1 just lost my settings when upgrading from 12.0. Workspaces and layouts can be reloaded, but there are several settings and colors in preferences, and tool bar favorities which will take time with 2 computers side by side to reconstruct. Are these stored anywhere at all? Please let use import the preferences into the new version.

Yeah.. it sucks big time!!!

The 'Window layouts' and Custom keyboard shortcuts are the only ones I'm aware of the can be copy-saved and pasted"

("C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\MAGIX\Sound Forge Pro\12.0", copy/save the <keyboard.ini> file and the <.ForgeWindowLayout> files to paste in the new 12.1 folder at the same location after re-installation.)

Hi, I found a workaround to deal with the lost preferences problem (Win 10, 64bit). Simply open "Regedit" and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Magix, SOUND FORGE Pro. Then erase folder "12.1" and rename folder "12.0" to "12.1".

This worked for me very well. Program prefs, VST, toolbar etc. are back!! good luck! jko

Thanks for this. Its possibly a bit risky 😱 I did look in current user originally but there doesn't seem to be much there. I have reconfigured one install by hand (and documented it with screen shots) but I will do the other install by editing the registry and see what happens.

Just tried the registry hack on my second install. It copies everything except colours. That leaves me with a ten settings to change.

Thx for your feedback. Glad it worked for most of the settings.

Thanks 'jko', I suspected the registry settings, but I did not want to do trial and error reg tweaks. I'll bookmark the instructions for future reference. Unfortunately many folks are not comfortable messing with the registry.. and rightly so. But at least it will save time and aggravation for some of us. Thanks again.

Anyone not familiar with the registry should definitely not attempt this at home. I backed up the old and new Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MAGIX\SOUND FORGE Pro\12.0 and 12.1. They added a new File menu option " Reset All preferences and cached data..." Not sure if clearing the prefs in 12.1 update was deliberate or they goofed and will fix it next update.

The hack unfortunately won't work for colours since the vocal activity feature was introduced. DEVs know the problem.

I hear you. It was supposed to be a quick fix. We approach the problem ASAP.

The new feature "reset all preferences (and cached data)" was mainly implemented to save you from eternal waiting times when plugins were not scanned correctly or something else is odd. But feel free to make a copy of your registry keys before using it!!! Take care!

I didn't realize you were an official Magix poster. Sorry about the "goofed" comment lol

The ability to save all prefs, custom toolbars and layouts to a file and load them later would be really handy.

Please find a batch file below for copying your registry keys automatically to version 12.1:

Is there going to be a patch for version 12.1 that restores the Preset Manager - or a similar way to save and transfer presets to new installations I thought Magix was working on this but it's now 2019 and not a word. This is a HUGE failure in SF 12.1
