Sound Forge Audio Studio 10 video feature and audio edit questions

Hi:

Questions for other users:

I bought Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio 10 a couple years ago because it worked with both Windows 7 and XP (I still use an XP PC for some old software that will not be updated to Windows 7 or 10). I am using it on Windows 7 right now. I am trying to become a smarter user and have some questions.

The simple video capabilities have also been very helpful.

1) If I detach a video, leaving the audio-only portion, and reattach the video later, does anyone know if prior to reattaching the video, I can access the detached video file in the folder? In other words, is the detached video stripped of audio before reattachment?

2) The reattachment process 'knows' what to reattach (the file name is the same). Since you don't specify what file to attach, it sounds like you cannot attach a duplicate copy of the video, say one you performed video editing on. Am I wrong about this?

3) Uncertain what state the detached video is in, I have stripped audio from a copy of a video in another program, then detached the video in SFAS, retaining the audio only, then edited the audio and video tracks separately, then reattached them...I think in SFAS 10, but it's hard to tell what SFAS does between detaching and reattaching as asked above.

4) There are some video features in SFAS 10 that are helpful, like some basic conversion or transcoding operations. The audio features in SFAS 10 are pretty nice...I just need to spend some more time learning how to more effectively use the tools. I sometimes need to perform video edits like brightening/contrast, etc. I have not found such features in the save as menu of SFAS. I realize it is not a video program despite the limited set of video tools. Am I missing something?

5) This may sound like a dumb question that might be answered by experiment, but I'll ask to be sure. Can one perform audio processing (Sony or iZotope) on short time segments rather than the full file, by highlighting shorter segments? For example, edit a noisy section, and EQ another?

6) Is there any documentation for the iZotope Audio Enhancer (plugin?) tools? I have been using them by trial and error, but just recently figured out the default configurations provided can be altered. It would be nice to get educated about what the different options are. They are not intuitive if one lacks knowledge about the tools...like the Exciter slider.

Thank you

I use SF Pro, so I'm not totally sure about some of the AS functions.

Firstly, AS is an audio editing app. and also not a DAW, the video preview is for reference.. any deletions or additions to the audio, would put the audio/video out of sync.

1-4) I would first detach the video, and save the audio separately. (48k PCM file), attach the video for preview if needed. Do your audio processing and when complete, save the file and then re-render the audio to a compatible audio file type, for instance, AAC audio for MP4 video files. 'Mux the new audio back into the original video to eliminate video re-rendering. This keeps the original video quality intact. I would copy/paste the original file first for back-up. For Muxing and such, I usually use the free 'MeGUI'.

5) Yes, you can process just part(s) of an audio file.

6) Offhand I'm not aware of any manuals. Look in the iZotope installation folder and/or VST folders for any PDF files. Check AS PDF manual for info or links? Otherwise get the manuals for similar iZotope plug-ins. Most.. even different manufacturers, have similar adj. parameters. For instance, practically ..all.. dynamics processors have Threshold, Ratio, Attack, Release and Output gain.

For anyone who hasn't found (or looked for yet) the Sound Forge iZotope plugin documentation:

dspcdn.sonycreativesoftware.com/current/extras/sfas10_audioenhancer.pdf

Not a huge amount of info (4 pages), but it at least defines what the function names intend and which are adjustable.
