Sound Forge 15 Pro - Equalizer

Mattylocks wrote on 4/24/2022, 9:03 AM

Hello everyone,
Does Sound Forge 15 Pro have an Equalizer that can be used to adjust the highs and lows for listening to MP3s?
I have a very old version of Sound Forge that has about 10 plug-ins. I'd drag and drop my MP3s and add various plug-ins and save the altered version, but wanted to know if there's any sort of EQ in the newest version of Sound Forge. If it doesn't have an EQ, I'm hoping I can use FabFilter as the EQ, provided FabFilter works well with Sound Forge Pro 15. Thanks so much.

Sound Forge Pro (Magix or SCS) has about five (or more) EQs included.. Graphic, Paragraphic, Parametric, ect., ect. The are literally hundreds of others for free or otherwise. Everyone has their personal favorites. My 'newest' current favorite is a free wide band "7Q" equalizer, the 1.5 octave 7Q was inspired by the Kjaerhus Classic... another nice sounding graphic.

FabFilter should work. SFP-16 supports VST 2, 3 (x64 and x86) formats (including Direct X an ARA).

btw, welcome to the Magix Sound Forge users community @Mattylocks.

Thanks so much for all of the info! I really appreciate your help. So Sound Forge Pro 15 has EQs that will allow me boost the bass and treble?

The legacy (Direct X) Graphic, Paragraphic and Parametric EQs can be found in the "Process> EQ" menu. They can also can be located in the "FX Favorites" along with the newer EQs . You may want to use "Fx Favorites 'Organize' tool and drag the EQs to the "Favorites" folder to access them easier. Using an FX chain is another option, either on the timeline for non-destructive processing (with optional automation) or in the 'Fx Favorites, "Apply Plug-in chain" mode

btw, I like the included iZ Ozone Elements (Paragraphic) EQ as well, it sounds good and has a nice UI, Ozone Elements also has an 'auto' mode for the EQ and loudness which may be useful to some folks.

Thanks so much! So you definitely recommend the Suite over the Stand alone version I take it. I was debating which one I should purchase. Thanks again!

rraud wrote on 4/25/2022, 5:57 PM

Unless you want SpetraLayers Pro and Melodyne (neither are EQs), which are in the Sound Forge Pro "Suite", the standard version of Sound Forge Pro is usually more than sufficient for most folks. The Suite version does include an additional dynamic EQ. The low budget SF Audio Studio has EQs as well but not as many as SF Pro or SF Pro Suite.

See the Sound Forge comparison webpage to see what is included in SF Audio Studio, SF Pro and the SF Pro Suite.

You are awesome! Thanks for the comparison link. From what I saw it looks like I should go with Sound Forge Pro. My old version of Sound Forge allowed me to drag MP4s and MP3s, make changes and then save back. I hope Sound Forge Pro allows MP4s as well. Thanks again!

There should be no problems with AVC/AAC (mp4) A/V files. Some folks experienced MP3 issues in SF-15 but a simple reset usually fixed that. There is a low latency driver issue (noise) as well, but that was specific to SFAS (Audio Studio) and relatively rare.

My old version of Sound Forge allowed me to drag MP4s and MP3s, make changes and then save back

It is best to save files in the PCM format until all editing, is complete then encode the lossy files for the end user. If you need to change audio for video, and if there are not cuts or additions, 'muxing' in the new audio, does not require re-rendering the video maintaining picture quality.

Thanks so much for the tip on saving files! Hopefully Sound Forge 16 solved the MP3 problem and a reset won't be necessary. Are you Rick, the moderator?

Sort of.. I am a replica of Rick the moderator. Rick was kidnapped by extraterrestrials and taken to Planet X.

Hi,
Just a few SF15 vs SF15 questions.
1) Did they fix the MP3 issue in SF15 or does it still exist.
2) SF16 has no MP3 issues?
3) SF15 is available at two vendors, but not SF16. I know SF16 is available on the link you provided above, but do you have any idea when SF16 will be available for purchase at vendor websites?

Thank you.

rraud wrote on 4/30/2022, 6:14 PM

AFAIK @Mattylocks, the MP3 issues have been fixed, but why even bother with SF-15, there likely will not be anymore updates since SF-16 has been published.

I would highly recommend purchasing Sound Forge directly from Magix. When buying from third-party sellers, like Best Buy, Amazon, Guitar Center, ect, ect., there is usually a voucher code system to go through before you get the activation serials codes e-mailed to you from Magix. There has been more than a few reports of problems.. pilot error and otherwise. Buying SF on eBay is a real bad idea, period.

I was thinking of Sweetwater or B&H. I trust them and have had very good experiences buying software and other products from each of these vendors. I bought Sound Forge and Vegas from B&H years ago and had no issues. I'm interested in Vegas as well and both vendors carry Vegas and Sound Forge, just not the recent version of Sound Forge. If the MP3 issues have been fixed in SF15 I might go with that. Does Sound Forge come with a number of plugins or do you have to buy those separately? Thanks.

rraud wrote on 5/1/2022, 11:05 AM

Both B&H and Sweetwater are reputable sellers @Mattylocks, just be aware of the voucher process if you purchase the download. I do not think the voucher system is necessary when purchasing a SF on a disc, because the serial code is usually on the disc envelope. For a definitive answer email Magix ( shop@magix.net ) .

Does Sound Forge come with a number of plugins,

Yes , the more expensive the versions (Pro and Pro Suite) the more plug-ins and Fx are included. Audio Studio includes iZ's Qzone 9 Elements plug-in which is decent. Take another look at the Sound Forge comparison webpage for third-party plug-ins and effects.

There are also many good plug-ins available for free as well, Plug-ins 4 Free is one of many websites with a plethora of free VSTs.
Otherwise the Plugin Boutique has lots of low cost deals. iZotope typically has great deals for the Christmas holiday season.

Thanks so much for all of the great info. I will definitely email to shop@magix.net before making any purchases. I'm very wary of free software these days, as I recently downloaded a free Equalizer software I was told was safe and wound up with a bunch of pop-up adds that I still haven't fully gotten rid of. I'd rather pay for it and avoid that nightmare again. I will check into the low cost deals you mentioned. Thanks again, I really appreciate your help and guidance with this.

rraud wrote on 5/2/2022, 10:29 AM

In my experience, 99% of the free VST audio plug-ins i have tried and used (many), function with no annoyances of adware or malware. Some have restrictions if there is a upgrade version available.

Nectar by iZotope is a plugin I highly recommend...

my 2 cents

Mattylocks wrote on 5/2/2022, 3:10 PM

Thanks Xman. I'll check out iZotope. Thanks Rick, it's nice to know that most of the free VSTs come with no issues.

Mattylocks wrote on 5/15/2022, 1:06 PM

Hello,

I've recently purchased Sound Forge Pro 16 but am unable to access Izotope Ozone 9 Elements. Was there an extra download step I may have missed, because I'm not finding it any of the sections 'Effects' etc. Thanks so much.

rraud wrote on 5/15/2022, 1:44 PM

Hi @Mattylocks, assuming you installed Ozone from the Sound Forge installation manager, already, when you initially open the Ozone 9 plug-in, you should get an activation dialog pop-up.
In the same email from Magix that contained the activation serial for SFP 16, there also should be a unique serial code for Ozone Elements and another for RX Elements. Both Ozone and RX will be activated through iZotope which can be used on any host application that supports one of the pertinent plug-in formats.

If you do not have or cannot find the iZ serials, email Magix with your purchase info.
infoservice@magix.net
The third-party plug-ins that are included with SF are not listed in your Magix 'My Products' webpage.

btw, if you received Sound Forge in a Vegas Video deal, the third-party audio plug-ins activation codes are not included and must be purchased separately to activate.

Mattylocks wrote on 5/15/2022, 2:10 PM

Thanks so much. I had issues with the download. There was some huge file that hung up the download for 4 hours. Everything else installed ok, so I restarted computer and Sound Forge opened fine. I forgot about the other two serial numbers. I found them, but when I click the link, the exe file is: soundforgepro16_dlm_ui89be file and I'm not sure if it will try to reinstall Sound Forge if I double click that exe file.

rraud wrote on 5/15/2022, 3:52 PM

That is installation manager file @Mattylocks . When you double-click that, there will be a check-mark list with the SF and iZ items to install, only click the ones you want,. If they are already installed, you do not need to reinstall.

The iZ activation serials are needed when you first launch the Oz 9 plug-in in SF.

Mattylocks wrote on 5/15/2022, 5:58 PM

Thanks so much! You are a lifesaver! I installed Ozone Elements and RX Elements and it works wonderfully! I love Sound Forge! If I want multiple audio tracks in the same window I'll have to purchase Vegas or Acid right? I know I can open a number of separate audio track files but it would be nice to be able to have multiple audio tracks in the same file. Would you recommend for music: Acid or Vegas? I'm leaning toward Acid but can't confirm whether the newest version allows users to drag and drop MP3 files onto the audio track. Thank you.

Mattylocks wrote on 5/16/2022, 11:14 AM

Thanks so much for the info. It’s nice to know that Sound Forge integrates well with Vegas. Thanks for list of other DAWs as well – you’ve given me a lot to choose from – leaning toward Acid or Vegas. Thanks again!

rraud wrote on 5/16/2022, 11:30 AM

You can have up to 32 channels in Sound Forge Pro.. however... SF is an editing and mastering multi-channel application. For recording and mixing music and post production sound for video, a multi-track application is needed. There are many apps to choose from, expensive to free. If you work with video, Vegas Pro would be (and is) my choice. Try out as many to find the one you are comfortable using and fits your budget. Sound quality is similar in all and depends mostly on the user's audio skills. Popular DAWs include; Acid, Audition, ProTools, Reaper, Samplitude and the free Audacity. Vegas Pro has a substantial multi-track DAW built in, which Sound Forge can be integrated into.
FYI, Vegas was an audio-only DAW when it was originally published by Sonic Foundry in 1999. A basic video editing option was added in Vegas 2 or 3.
