Sony FX3 files compatibility with Video Pro X

Gus_2030 wrote on 6/5/2023, 6:15 PM

I have been using Video Pro X with mov files, a Magix version I bought back in 2018, however, I cannot get any audio to play from my new Sony FX30 camera. (FX30 and FX3 use the same video/audio codecs)

In the timeline I only see the video but no audio whatsoever and I am sure I recorded audio. I can play it in the camera, no problem. It just seems that Magix is not compatible with Sony IPCM 24 bit audio.

When I try to play the same footage in VLC the video plays fine but no sound at all also, and I get a message saying "Codec not supported: VLC could not decode the format ipcm". So I am thinking this is the same problem for Magix Pro X.

Will the new version of Magix Pro X allow to decode video and audio without this problem? I am using a desktop computer Windows 11, i7 processor with this older version of Magix Pro X purchased in January 2018. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi

. . . . It just seems that Magix is not compatible with Sony IPCM 24 bit audio . . . .

iPCM encoded audio is not aupported by VPX natively.

Did you get some Sony software with the camera? If so does it offer conversion of the iPCM to LPCM or AAC and/or install a codec for the video?

If not then conversion for existing video is an option - FFMPeg should be able to do this, other converters eg Handbrake and AviDemux do not support the iPCM audio.

Unless there is a specific reason for recording in iPCM format I would suggest record the audio in AAC format which is compatible with VPX.

I don't have any specific reason for iPCM format, and I found out the recording audio formats in the Sony FX30 camera are as follows:

RECORDING FORMAT (AUDIO)

LPCM 2ch (48 kHz 16 bit), LPCM 2ch (48 kHz 24 bit), LPCM 4ch (48 kHz 24 bit) 2, MPEG-4 AAC-LC 2ch 2

But I don't see anywhere in the menu of the camera where to change the format to AAC-LC.

I am at a loss on this one.

Hi

Is the manual of no help?

On my Sony camera, the setting is under the Camera/Mic options - yours may be similar or under a sub menu of the recording format options.

@johnebaker Hi, I can't reply in msgs or upload pics on here for some reason, I'll try again later, I'm ok but I'm fat from not smoking & eating too much, bit breathless still so it isn't easy to get fit but I'm getting there, off for a kip, 😁

Your file played no prob in MMS & VPX, smooth as silk 🤷‍♂️

@Former user

Hi

Interesting that the file would play OK on your system, I get no audio in MMS or VPX, and VLC is the only player which can play it with audio.

This probably means you have some codec installed that I do not have.

@johnebaker Hi, yep that's the only conclusion i can give too 🤷‍♂️ I use VLC & MPC players, both play it no problem

You can delete this if you want.

No problem in Vegas too

PS, I don't do audio stuff, I have Sound Forge Audio 15, that came with MMS/MEP at some point, don't remember don't use it. Volume up & down is all i use so if i have a codec it's came with ... something..🤷‍♂️

johnebaker wrote on 6/6/2023, 12:59 PM

Hi Gid

I too tried the video clip in Vegas Pro 14, I know it is old, however it has served me well for the odd effect in the past and it could not read the file at all.

I'll not delete your comment, though I will remove the images, then we can pursue what codec is being used.

No, there is no setting to change the format to AAC-LC. The manual does not mention anything at all either. There is nothing in the sub menus. No options. I am hoping at least the the new version of Magix Pro X will play the files. I will try to share a file from the Sony FX30 to see if someone can try it.

Former user wrote on 6/6/2023, 1:57 PM

@johnebaker Yep no prob deleting it, it was only up long enough for you to see,

There's a few mentions of IPCM n the Vegas 19 bug fixes release notes, this one for XAVC but there's others

When I google ipcm there's mixed results, some lpcm, lPCM, LPCM & ipcm 🤷‍♂️

Google - "What's the difference between PCM and LPCM? PCM audio usually refers to 2-channel uncompressed audio, while LPCM describes multichannel PCM audio. Although, not always, as you can see the example above lists PCM 5.1 as the audio format."

CubeAce wrote on 6/6/2023, 2:39 PM

Hi Gid.

Pulse Code Modulation. L is for multichannel.

iPCM is attached to intra-frame video codecs and refers to lossless audio compression as normal PCM wav files are not normally compressed.

@Gus_2030 Hi, yes if you can share a file that would be good 👍

Here are a couple of very small HD files. One is recorded in XAVC-S format, the other in XAVC S-I format.

The XAVC S-I format is less compressed as it shows to be: 111mb 4:2:2 10 bit.

The more compressed file format is XAVC S which is only 16mb 4:2:0 8 bit.

Both files were definitely recorded with audio and verified in playback in the camera. But they don't show any audio on Magix Video Pro X (2018 release).

If someone can test these files in the latest version of VPX or have further suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Got it. But how about the other file which is more common. The only problem is sound. Picture is fine but no sound at all. And sound was rechecked and it is there. But Magix does not see it.

Former user wrote on 6/6/2023, 5:13 PM

@Gus_2030 There was just one file in that link, It played fine no problem,

Gus_2030 wrote on 6/6/2023, 5:38 PM

Gid, Were you able to hear my voice fine? It looks like it it is the XAVC-S, which is the very compressed file, 8 bit.

Which exact version of Magix Video Pro X are you using? I used the 2018 version and that's the version I had the audio problem.

I will buy the latest version right away if that's the one you are using. Please let me know.

Former user wrote on 6/6/2023, 5:51 PM

@Gus_2030 There was only one file in that link, you only shared one, it plays fine, audio is perfect for me you can hear it in my video, I have the latest versions of MMS & VPX but as in the comments above wait until someone else tries it because -

@johnebaker shared a similar file with me that he couldn't play the audio on but I could play the audio. I have other software that seems to have a codec that lets VPX do this.

MediaInfo to the right of my video above is your file from that link.

Gus_2030 wrote on 6/6/2023, 5:55 PM

how could I get that codec that will let VPX play the audio from that file?

Gus_2030 wrote on 6/6/2023, 5:59 PM

Gid, there should be two files in the link. Maybe it did not finish uploading when you checked. If you check now you will see two files

I am wrong. I see only one. Let me check what happen....
