Sonic Forge 15, build 121 fails to open MP4 File

Thomas-Wikman wrote on 9/18/2022, 4:23 PM

When I try to open a video file from my GoPro with Sound Forge I get the error that the file cannot be opened. I've uploaded the .mp4 file to my site. Here is the link: http://123sync.com/test/GX020016.zip

WHen in Vegas, I go to the Audio Editor and Sound Forge is started and the error occurs. I"ve checked for the latest version and it states that V15, build 121 is what I am running. I have also opened the file directly from Sound Forge and the same error occurs. Does Sound Forge open mp4 files? What is wrong with Sound Forge?

@Thomas-Wikman

Hi

The GoPro video encoding format, HEVC (h.265), is not supported by Sound Forge - for existing video files they need converting to as h.264/AVC video with AAC audio encoding with a converter such as Handbrake or AviDemux.

For future recordings for use in SF the GoPro should be set to record h.264/AVC video with AAC audio encoding.

Thank you. However, all 4k and future resolutions on GoPro 10+ seem to be h.265. Vegas Pro just started to support it. I'd suggest Sound Forge do the same.

@Thomas-Wikman

Have you checked whether Sound Forge 16 supports that format?

I installed V16 and the same error happens. Why can't they just keep the current version up-to-date with the latest video codecs? The supported codec is over 3+ years old and consumes 2x+ the amount of space than the current codec. I don't think it even supports 4K.

@Thomas-Wikman Codec licenses cost a lot of money and it doesn't really make sense to buy expensive video codecs for audio editing software.

On my Win 10 PC, Vegas Pro 16 opens and plays the file. Sound Forge-15 and 16 does not. If you can open the file in Vegas, the audio can be subsequently opened in Sound Forge. Otherwise use Handbrake to transcode the file as @johnebaker stated.
