some objects cannot be moved on the timeline. Others can...

Hi Everybody.

A real newbie issue here I'm afraid:

I'm just trying to get to grips with Movie Studio 2023 after getting a computer able to handle it. It's very different to movie studio platinum 13 and 17. I'm struggling with very basic editing. I am finding a lot of the time that while trying to move objects around the time line (ones that I have cut), they just bounce back to the position they are already in. There seems to be no pattern to it. Some move in one direction but not the other. Some will move if I first move them to another track, but some just don't seem to want to move at all. I am in single mouse mode and I've tried with snapping enabled and not enabled.

No doubt this is something very simple and basic, unless I am encountering some sort of glitch...

Thanks in advance for any help!!

Hi Paul.

The only things I can think of that may make this behaviour happen if you are in Single mouse mode is if the object (cut clip) you are trying to move is still connected to another clip on another track or you have a padlock in place.

Hi Paul and welcome,

I suggest that you watch my tutorials 25, 15 and 17 on my YouTube channel, in that order, to get a good feel for how the program works. That will save you a lot of time and frustration.

Unlike Vegas MS, you can't drag an object on the same track and expect other objects to move out of the way. That only happens in Storyboard mode and only with objects on track 1. When you move an object over another, the program makes a transition, even over the whole length. Is this what you mean when you are moving an object in one direction and it bounces back?

Screen shots or a capture video would help us see and understand what you are faced with.

Hi Paul,

Re-reading what you said and Ray's reply, do make sure that you are in Mouse mode for a single object. Press 6 on the top row of your keyboard to make sure.

Hi sorry for the delay.

I will keep watching the tutorials. I was in single mouse mode, definitely. I wasn't expecting things to move out of the way. I understand that an overlap will become a transition. I literally mean that objects were just bouncing back to their previous position when I dragged them, as soon as I let go of the mouse. I'll keep watching the tutorials.

Thanks

@VidBeginner

Hi,

A capture video would be helpful, even some screen shots.

I vaguely recall having seen something like this and I think it was because I had trimmed or split a clip leaving 1 or 2 frames behind that weren't visible. Dragging another object across one of these could cause problems as the object being dragged is longer than the 1 or 2 frame object and a transition cannot be created.

You can check this by dragging objects that can be seen down onto another track (use Shift+drag to move straight down), then try to see if there is anything left. Try to lasso the blank area to see if anything gets grabbed or zoom in to see if anything is there.

Hi, Here is a video showing what is happening. I can't see a pattern to it, but it is happening a lot. I'd really like to solve it because it is going to add a lot to the time I end up spending. Often there is way of getting a clip to move, if I either move it in small little increments, or move it to another track, or via another track. But I am often having to click and drag 5, 10 or more times just to move a clip, which is really no good.

Hi.

You have managed to create a warning message I have never seen and seems to be offering an explanation. What does it say in total?

I think I also see other video applications open at the same time. That is never a good idea. Try closing those apps.

Are there more tracks under the ones we can see?

Hi. Thanks Ray. Sorry for the delay. It was rare that I had another video app on, I don't usually. Strangely I hadn't noticed that warning message. I am continuing to get it, and it says the same thing: the item "cannot be moved to the current positions because other objects have already been placed here". But it says this when there is clearly nothing in that position... and it says it when I am in mouse mode for single track (so there can't be anythign to the right of what I am moving (I'm moving it all)). THere seems to be no pattern or cause to it, other than that, a lot of the time, eventually, it will let me move the clip or clips to another track. It's very strange. I've also had instances where it won't let me trim a clip for some reason. To answer your question, yes, there are other clips in other tracks... many of them will have been put there because I couldn't move them on the track they were on.

VidBeginner wrote on 12/29/2022, 3:44 PM

Another thing I could do with knowing about, if possible. I'm guessing it is a simple answer.. often the app will not let me create an overlap between two objects, or it won't even let me put one rigth up against another object.. it insists on there being a gap, and again, it snaps the object back away to create that gap. All these issues seem so wierd and are totally new - never had them before with movie studio previous versions.

VidBeginner wrote on 12/29/2022, 3:47 PM

Another wierd thing is that tracks keep muting themselves on their own, which keeps happening repeatedly. No doubt some of these are "smart" features, but they are so time consuming when you don't want them happening and don't understand why they are happening or how to get round them.

CubeAce wrote on 12/29/2022, 4:05 PM

@VidBeginner

Hi.

Sometimes if you have had a clip in that position before and edited it, there can be a small section left behind. Maybe as small as one frame and not visible unless the timeline is expanded and looked closely at. Or it could be a ghost image. Something recorded as being there but not being there. Some thing that has been deleted or moved earlier but not recorded or seen on the timeline. I have never experienced that myself but seem to recall another user some time back having that problem.

Either way. Try adding an extra track above the one you are having problems with by pressing the + sign in the track header on the left hand side and transpose all the clips you have on your current timeline to the one above.

Then see if the clip you want to add goes into position without any problems. If it does then keep that track but delete the track you had used before. If you get a warning sign saying anything on the track you want to delete will be lost, accept that to get rid of any lingering files you don't need.

Ray.

Thanks for this. I'll have a go, but it is happening so so much. Constantly. I expect I will constantly be needing to create new tracks and move loads of stuff to them. I have already been moving things to new / empty tracks a lot, and I think sometimes it is not even letting me move things to tracks that are fresh / clean. I'll do what you suggest as diligently as I can though and see what happens. Thanks.

CubeAce wrote on 12/29/2022, 7:10 PM

@VidBeginner

To be honest I'm completely puzzled over why this should happen at all.

The only conceivable way I could imagine this happening is if a new project is not created along with it's own folder and files, but instead the timeline has all it's visible files deleted ready for the next lot of files and then save the new project under a new title.

@VidBeginner

Hi,

As I mentioned, sometimes a fragment gets left behind and I think that is your case. I can't see the entire message. Please post it again with the complete message.

Turn on the Magnet so that things snap together - see the image below.

I can see that you have successfully created transitions, so the problem is not everywhere, just limted. We don't know exactly what you've done to get where you are.

In your video, drag the left video down a track. Drag the right video down to the same track. Now try to overlap them. If you can then there is a fragment on the previous track that was blocking you. Drag the cursor over that area to try to lasso it then delete it.

Why do you need to create new tracks. By default, there should be 32 tracks, just scroll down. If not, go to the Project Settings, shortcut E, and check the box beside 32 tracks, or more if you want. This is not Vegas MS where you have to keep inserting tracks.

Out of curiosity, why is the first track in your image very small, the next track tall, and the one that you are demonstrating, probably the default height?

Please learn how to take screen shots. We do not take them with a camera. You capture the screen (I use Alt-PrSc and paste it in a graphics program), save it as a jpeg and upload it here. There are plenty of tutorials online showing how to do this. Also, get a video capture program and learn to use it. There are some free ones. Try Debut. We want to see the entire screen, not just part of it.

You say that the program mutes tracks by itself. I have never seen that happen. Do you mean that the M button in the track header gets turned on by itself? If so, you must have noticed when it turned on as everything on that track, both audio and video are turned off. There are only two ways that I know of to turn on Mute - directly in the track header by clicking on it or in the Mixer by clicking on the Mute button.

Hi

In addition to @browj2's comment - 'Out of curiosity, why is the first track in your image very small' - I would ask what are those objects on track1 for ?

AFAICS they serve no purpose at all, having the Chromakey Color effect applied and judging by their name and appearance appear to be multiple copies of the same video clip which is about 10 secs long with some very short overlaps.

I suspect that the object you are trying to move cannot be moved to the left because it is grouped with another object on the timeline which cannot move any further to the left hence giving the '. . . . cannot be moved because of . . . .'

Please post a screen shot of the timeline full screen - click the small square top right of the timeline - indicated by yellow arrow in image below, and

  • Set all tracks to the default height.
  • Zoomed out so the complete timeline can be seen - click the double headed arrow to the right of the bottom grey bar (indicated by the green arrow in image below) to get the timeline to fit the screen as indicated by the grey bar being full length as seen in the image.
  • The clip you are trying to move is selected

Once you have the screenshot, you can revert the timeline back to as it was by clicking the small square again (yellow arrow).

I've just tried a similar action here and have no problems with dragging an object back over a previous object. MEP 2014 was a long time ago but I don't recall any issue with that version either in this regard.

So, it seems to be peculiar to your movie and it's contents.

If it is still misbehaving after stopping the video playing, start a new project and have a try with just a couple of objects on the timeline.

Anther thing to try: zoom in a bit so that all those objects to the left are more widely spaced, then try dragging that object back.

You also have the Speed effect showing (but not selected/ticked). Are the objects to the left set at a different speed to the one you're dragging? If so, try matching all the speeds.

”Try moving it again with the video stopped”.

No difference. This has been going on for several years as I wrote and I have tried everything I can think of. This occurs also in every MAGIX 2006-project I start.

”You also have the Speed effect showing (but not selected/ticked). Are the objects to the left set at a different speed to the one you're dragging? If so, try matching all the speeds.”

Yes, some objects to the left have about 50% speed (“slow motion”) but not the clip closest to the left. Strange if that affects. The “speed” effect shouldn't be associated with that restriction.

@Alfns

I'm trying to isolate possible causes. Please try:

1. Expanding the timeline zoom so all those small objects to the left are wider

2. A simple scenario with one object to the left and then dragging another object onto it from the right (as you are doing). If that works OK (and I expect it will), it must be something odd about those objects to the left. Are they one file that you have split up?

If all else fails, a program Reset won't hurt:

File>Settings>Default Values>Rest Program Settings to Defaults.

Hi

Have you been a previous user of with Vegas Movie Studio, Vegas or another video editor that allows drag and drop 'shuffle'?

Magix Movie Studio/Video Deluxe does not feature drag n drop shuffle you need to use a different technique:

To 'shuffle' media objects, set the Insert mode, see image below, and select Multi track ripple.

Select the media object you want to move and use Ctrl+X to remove the selected media from the timeline, reposition the timeline cursor to where the media is to be located and use Ctrl+V to paste the media clip into position.

If the timeline cursor is positioned between the start and end of a media object on the timeline, it will be split and the media inserted. If there are media objects on lower tracks these may also be split and moved leaving a gap.

Additionally, you need to zoom in closer, especially when you have a lot of shorter images/video clips on the timeline, to ensure accurate placement.
