Hello Guys,

Well this is not any doubt but just a question on jargons. I checked the net but the answers are bit confusing and too technical.

Can anyone tell me what is the differnces between Software and Application. Is MEP Premium 18 that is installed in my lappy a software or an application.

Thanks.

Hi Anirban

Software and Application are often used interchangeably to mean the same thing.

Strictly speaking Software is used to identify which part of a computer you are speaking about - a computer  needs Software and Hardware in order to work .

Software is the program or application needed to make the hardware do something useful.

To add a bit to John's description: I'd say any computer program, from the simplest "Hello World" to a full operating system like RISCOS, Linux or Windows, can be rightly called 'software'. An 'application' is more generally software (often a suite of interacting programs and support files) that does a particular task eg MEP is a video editing application.

My old MEP 14 has over 2500 files each of which is a piece of software, but I'd not call say an .ifx effect file an application.
