Software Updates

Purchased Movie Edit Pro. Clicked to get updated version. Froze up so I'm not sure if I received the update? I am showing Version 20.01.1.80 (U) UG code 8452 KA1. If this is not the updated version then I have no clue on how to get it? I am currently running Windows 11 ver 21H2. I get a Windows permissions error when I click on the Service_rel_u_x64_vc12 app.

Hi

. . . . Version 20.01.1.80 . . . .

This was the last version of Movie Edit Pro 2021.

Are you wanting, or trying, to upgrade to Movie Edit Pro 2022 if from within the program with current Update Service?

I obtained the NeatVideo demo plugin and absolutely cannot find where to locate it so that MEP can find and use it. Followed the directions that came with the Neat Video plugin. The recommended location for the Magix plugin does not exist? Tried the MEP directories. No matter where I place it, MEP tells me that it cannot locate it. Tried everything. I'm confused that the manufacturer of the NeatVideo plugin for Magix would not know where to install it? I downloaded the "Neat Video v5 Demo plug-in for Magix. Is this the wrong one?

Hi David.

Look in your Windows apps list and you will find documentation.

If you installed it onto your PC then the program should find it. You may have to reboot the PC first.

I am wondering why Magix is located in:

Hi David.

Did you check your system has compatibility for the Neat video plugin?

The normal directory for Magix would be Local Disc C:\ Program files \ Magix \ Movie Edit Pro (version).

The sys requirements are OK. But NeatVideo says that because Magix was downloaded from the Windows store that the directory is different so the plugin cannot be found. They said to try copying the plugin files directly to the Magix plugins folder. But windows is denying access. Good deal huh?

David, I have Neatvideo for Magix installed. NeatVideo5.vsx is in the C:\Program Files\Neat Video v5 for Magix\NeatVideo5.vsx folder.

I do not have anything regarding Neatvideo in my Plugins folders or for that matter in any of my Magix folders as far as I can see.

To access the plugin, I do not use the "Plugins" effect; for me, there was no need to manually install the plugin using the Video Plugins Manager.

I simply use the Neat Video effect button.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

In the image by @AAProds, did you click on Scan and scan for new plugins then restart? If not, do so.

When you installed NV, did you accept the defaults or did you install it eslewhere?

Neat Video shows up in both MEP2022 and VPX13 for me.

I do not see any Neat Video effect button and scanning does not locate the plug-in(see below).. The Windows Store installation placed the Magic App in a directory that apparently cannot see/access the plug-in according to Neat Video Support. And I get a permissions error if I try to move the plug-in into the Common/Vfx Plug-ins sub-folder in the Magix directory. Neat Video has asked me to try going to the Magix Website and re-download the App. I don't know if they will allow so I'm probably screwed. Good thing I only downloaded the trial version of Neat. Below are the locations of the Magix Software and the Neat Video plug-in as well as the "effects" view after scanning for plug-ins.

I think the issue is with that weird install location for MEP. Magix shouls set up their programs so that they install into a predictable location for third party developers to use. I'd get onto Magix Support and see what they think.

Neat Video has asked me to try going to the Magix Website and re-download the App.

I'd give this a shot. Assuming your MEP has been registered during the install process, you may see Movie Edit Pro/Movie Studio in your programs (I don't know how the Windows Store versions interact with the Magix registration process). If so, see if you can start the installation process from there. Be aware though that you may end up getting MMS 2022, which is the next version on from MEP 2021.

I'd persevere; Neat video is great for cleaning up old video.

Hi David.

If you keep getting a permissions warning try opening Movie Edit Pro by right clicking the programs' icon and select 'Run as administrator' and then try accessing neat video.

I am not sure you will be able to download the program from the Magix site as a full version as it no longer exists in the Windows app store but has been replaced with Windows Vegas Studio 17.

Hi Al.

I had already posted a link to that page earlier. I'm aware and suggested it may be a cause of the problem.

You can do a direct search for that program and you will get a hit for it but searching through the Windows app store itself it has been replaced with Windows Vegas Studio 17. To me that may suggest that if replaced with the Magix version it may not be possible to get a new activation code for it. The account is also at Microsoft as far as I can tell and not Magix.

What I'm trying to suggest now is if there is an access violation to the neat video program's location it may be possible to over-ride that if running MEP in administrator mode. Of course it may not work but maybe worth trying.

Has anyone noticed Movie Studio now has its own dedicated topic selection? How long has that been there?

Ray.

Ray, It's actually called Vegas MOVIE Studio 17, and it was released 9/10/2020. If you click on "related", you'll see MEP 2021, release date 4/11/2020, is there as well, so I don't think Vegas Movie Studio 17 replaced MEP 2021. More likely, Magix has forgotten to remove Vegas Movie Studio 17, which of course has gone the way of the dodo in the rest of the world.

Anyway, all that is moot. David has a copy of MEP 2021 and should be able to access a backup copy from Magix, hopefully with the "correct" installer.

Has anyone noticed Movie Studio now has its own dedicated topic selection? How long has that been there?

A couple of weeks, IIRC. 😉

The problem is exactly as several posts, including I think one from you, have indicated. It is because any app bought from the Windows Store is automatically installed to the default WindowsApps folder, which is sandboxed (because Microsoft believes that you, the user, should never want to make any changes to it, e.g., as in your case to add a third-party plugin).

However, if you have at least one additional drive to your standard C:\, you, the user, can change the install location of the app after initial installation. I believe, but cannot currently confirm, that doing this WILL allow your installation of MEP to access the NV plugin.

If you wish to at least try this (and it is reversible by simply repeating each step) this is the process:

  1. Go to Settings>Apps>Apps and Features
  2. Find the listing for Movie Edit Pro 2021.
  3. Left-click on the app name. This opens a small window with, normally (for WindowsApps) two options; Move or Uninstall.
  4. Clearly, chose Move.
  5. This will open a small screen where you will be asked to select the "new" drive.
  6. The app will be moved to the new location, again in a "WindowsApps" folder on the new drive, but with user access.

If you do not have a second drive to which to move the app then you need to remove the restrictions that M$ places on accessing the WindowsApps folder, either by editing your User Permissions (something I have never succeeded in doing) or, as I do, use (very carefully) a very useful piece of software called TakeOwnershipEx. This allows you to temporarily or permanently (at your choice) grant yourself access to first, the WindowsApps folder and then, in your case, to the MEP install folder. Once this is achieved, you should be able to use your NV plugin. Caveat: although I know TakeOwnershipEx allows me to access the WindowsApps folder I have not needed to or tried to use it in quite this way, i.e. to allow an app to "see and communicate with" a third-party app that is NOT sandboxed (in your case, the NV program).

@CubeAce

The change to that heading was made "quietly" by Magix. Moderators were informed on March 30th that the change had been made but it was not, I think, "publicly announced".

Thanks to everyone for their great input. Since I have been down this road before, I think that it is in my best interests to cut my losses and call it a day. I think that Microsoft is probably responsible for the problem and I am doubtful that they will correct it, at least not on my account. And I also feel that I do not have the savvy to implement many of the potential fixes without risking the functionality of my computer which I use for many other things. Therefore, if I continue trying to solve this problem, which I paid to bring upon myself, I can only foresee many hours of stress, ultimate failure and even damage to my computer. I'm not one to go begging Magix/Microsoft/NeatVideo for help anymore. Been there, done that and I have never had much success talking to or interacting with software companies. My only allies in this whole thing are the people on this forum and I appreciate that a lot. So, I have the Magix software and I will have to make due with that. Even though the restoration of my old videos will be somewhat of a disappointment, it was still a long shot for success anyway and I will still be able to utilize the application for other aspects of my video project. Again, thanks to all for caring. There should never be any expectation for a perfect world so this will be just another lesson learned to that end.

Nah, don't give up yet! Email infoservice@magix.net with your order details (after all, Magix gets most of the order money from MS [$149US I see at the moment]) and explain the problem; they might come to the party and give you a new activation code and download link to the "real deal".

I'm "tellin' ya", NV is worth it! 👍

You didn't happen to get a "P3" activation number from MS, did you?

Hi,

I think I understand the problem now - purchased from Microsoft Store which installs elsewhere than the correct place. MS may say it's the correct place, but it is not, as it messes up third party plugins.

For Neat Video, this is where the dll and vsx files should end up by default:

C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Common\VfxPlugins

Did you check if the two files are there?

NV is also installed by default under:

C:\Program Files\Neat Video v5 for Magix

If the dll and vsx files are in the locations indicated above, then in MEP, under Effects, click on Plugins, Advanced, Add search path and navigate to the above location.

browj2: All of the NV files are intact and where they are supposed to be. I have tried your suggestion to no avail. The plug-in is simply not available to MAGIX no matter what I do. Sad to say...

AAProds: I do not recall getting an activation number from Microsoft. only and order number. I suppose that it couldn't hurt to email MAGIX. I suspect that they will tell me that their software is working fine and there is very little they can do for me since I did not download it from them. And NeatVideo did nothing wrong as well. I simply made a mistake buying from the Microsoft Store and now it's time to move on. I will take your advice on the email though.

@browj2

Hi John.

purchased from Microsoft Store which installs elsewhere than the correct place.

I think M$ might disagree with that final statement!!!

As I wrote above, because they seem to think that all users of their software are liable to do something silly with their computer (and then moan bitterly at M$ for their "terrible software") they are "trying hard" (a very slight euphemism) to persuade as many software manufacturers as they can to offer their products through the Windows Store. M$ see this as "beneficial" to both themselves and the software manufacturer, because any software sold there must install to C:\Program Files\WindowsApps only, with no possibility of the user, or even the manufacturer, making any change to this! That location is sandboxed by Windows so no user can interfere with it.

At least one "problem" created by this is the one which is discussed most recently in this thread, i.e., if the user wishes to "add" a third-party app to his installation and that installation is outside the WindowsApps folder, unless the software manufacturer has made a coding alteration which can allow this the third-party app cannot be seen or accessed by the host program.

I know that that coding alteration CAN be made; because of an NDA with the manufacturer of a completely different set of apps I cannot say more than the fact that it is possible to create a sandboxed app which can access a non-sandboxed third-party plug in.

So, perhaps, if Magix are to release Windows Store versions of their software they need to also make the changes which would allow this access?
