SMS 2015: 4 new vita instruments error loading into Independence VSTi, all other are working perfectly

tomotello wrote on 1/5/2015, 2:16 AM

One of the MAGIX strategy is to have a smooth growing path within the various product lines. Upgrading from Samplitude Music Studio 2015 to Sampliude Pro X2 is straight forward. This is also valid for most of the vita/ytil instruments, which are loadable without problems into Independence VSTi in case you need the growing scalability provided by Independence Sampler Workstatiion for professional studio setups (e.g. Multi layer, 128*128*128 addresses for bank / program configurations).

Now,  only for four of the new SMS 2015 instruments this compatibility seems to be broken and an error - 'cannot load zone chunk! newer version needed!' - occures while trying to load into Independence VSTi:

Analog Synths
Celtic Harp
Urban Drums
World Flutes

I assume, this is just a bug and will be fixed within a next update for Independence VSTi. Can someone from MAGIX confirm?

Important: An answer like 'the new instruments are not intended to be loaded into Independence, but only into to new, specific per instrument customized VSTi's cannot be accepted. This is not a scalable approach  and requires hours of individual instrument configurations for each piece of music and brings down and limits the reach features of the Yellow Tool based instruments to the same as with already have with Native Kontakt. It was once my reason to switch from Kontakt to Independence at the time.

Thanks, Thomas

PS Note: All other instruments running well on Independence VSTi (3.2, latest update as of Nov 2013)

Bass Machine
Electric Piano
Rock Drums
String Ensemble
Vibraphone (additional package at extra costs)
Vintage Organ
Vita (entire set of Vita 2 instruments)

Hi Thomas,

As you are aware, this is a user site and no one here works for Magix.

I suggest that you take a look at the Samplitude user site.

Here is one of the comments by Kraznet about Independence. There are others. Do a search. You might want to post your question there.

You should raise a ticket with Magix.

I haven't tried the new instruments in Independence yet, but I will.

Hi Thomas,

Further to my last message, I went into SMS to see what I had done with Independence. Basically, nothing. I used a couple of the instruments.

I did try to get the Vita instruments linked but I was unsuccessful. I followed the manual and copied Vita and other instruments into the following folder:

C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Samplitude Music Studio 2015\Synth\Independence\VST Plug-Ins\...

I copied everything from:

C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Samplitude Music Studio 2015\fx-preset\FXBStore\150#§§ Vita Solo Instruments

and

C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Samplitude Music Studio 2015\fx-preset\FXBStore\Vita

I even tried copying in the Vita from:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\Common\MxSynth\Vita

Nothing works.

In Independence, under load instrument, selecting VST Instruments only shows Refresh. I select this but nothing happens. The manual says that a refresh is automatic when Independence starts and any valid VST instruments are recognized. But I get nothing. Obviously I'm missing something here.

How did you manage to get the VST Vita instruments to show up? What did you copy, from where and to where?

Thanks,

Hi John

What you are touching here is another feature of Independence which is unique on the market - the ability of act as VST host for other VSTi's. I've described this in a post on Samplitude forum here . But as Independence is the mother of the *.ytil format (*.vita is the same - just a renaming) used by the Samplitude product family, there is no need to involve another VSTi in between - the direct reuse of the instrument (layer) files witin Independence is the goal to benefit from the scalability of Independence when it comes to large presets such as we need when we want to have flexible GM/GS/XG setup to be able to play any of the billions midi files wirtten for Yamaha, Roland Korg hardware but with much more features for example for more realistic studio productions. See my last desperate claim in Kontakt forum before I completely switched definitively over to Independence here

To make the long story short, to be able to load the "Vita" instruments into Independence VSTi you have to present the instrument definition files (called layers) and the samples in a directory structure which Independence understands. To save disk space I do this with symbolic links - but to make it simple for now, let's do it with a copy example for one of the newer Vita instruments provided with SMS 2015, the 'Default Spicc' from String Ensemble.

1) Prepare a new Library path for Independence, with explorer or in a cmd:

mkdir C:\johns_library
cd C:\johns_library
mkdir layers "image files"

Now, you have the structure for a new Independence library path:

C:\JOHNS_LIBRARY
├───image files
└───layers

2) Copy instruments definiton (layer) and samples to the Independence Library path

copy the instrument definition file as follows by removing the line break:

copy "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Magix Services\MxSynth\String Ensemble\Layers\_Spiccato\Default Spicc.ytil" C:\johns_library\layers

copy the image file with the samples as follows by removing the line break:
copy "C:\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\Common\MxSynth\String Ensemble\image files\Vita String Ensenmble.ytif" "C:\johns_library\image files"

3) Setup Independence VSTi for your Samplitude product..

As hosting application for our example let's take the Samplitude Studio 2015 64bit version  (it could be any other of the Samplitude family such as the latest Pro X2 ).

Ensure that the Independence VSTi is known to SMS 2015:
File->Program Preferences->System/Audio
and add the Independence VSTi path - in our example for 64bit... rescan ...

4) Add your new library path to Independence

Right click on the mute button and you should see now Independence, select it

Select default 'Multi-Timbral...

then in the Independence VSTi got to Preferences, add johns_library to the Library Paths:

Save Preferences ...

... and close Independence and select again as before.

Right click on on a layer:

5) Load your Vita Instrument

Now you'll see our 'Default Spicc' from the SMS 2015 Vita instruments and can play and use it in your configurations with all the enormous benefits of Independence sampler workstation.

Of course, manually done - there are some steps to do - however, I've automated the symbolic link creation with powershell script and a entire setup for all available ytil instruments on a hard disk for Independence is then just a second. If you or others are interested I could store the script somewhere for you.

... Now, just as claimed this important scaling up capability has been broken just for the latest four new Vita Instruments as noted in my initial post. Such a break does completely violate the entire benefit from the Independence Sampler Technolgoy over all their competetitors - therefore I raise stronlgy my hand to MAGIX and ask for update Independence VSTi accordingly - otherwise they will get into the same lock-in as Native Intruments with their unscalable Kontakt 5 scripting based instruments where everyone is excited aboutt individual instruments - but noboday is able to make music without tweaking and configuring instruments all the time for each individual piece of music...

Regards, Thomas

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for your help. The key was the location of the correct files:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Magix Services\MxSynth

I had forgotten about these completely.

I'll try it out later today.

To get Independence to work from one version to another, I copied the Independence folder from:

C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Samplitude Music Studio 2013\Synth\Independence

which was where everything was installed by default in the first place, to

C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Samplitude Music Studio 2015\Synth\Independence

Of course this gives me the 12GB three times, for 2013, 2014 and 2015.

If I understand your point 3 correctly, I could just put it all in one location and add that location to the VSTi path in SMS2015. Correct?

Thanks,

John

Hi John

If I understand your point 3 correctly, I could just put it all in one location and add that location to the VSTi path in SMS2015. Correct?

No, point 3 is only the make the Independence VSTi itself visible to Samplitude products On my Windows 8.1 64bit installation it's C:\Program Files\VSTPlugins .
Samplitude products are parsing then the entire sub directory tree for VST effect and instrument DLL's

C:\Program Files\VSTPlugins
└───MAGIX
     Independence
    └───VSTPlugins64\Independence.dll

The copy of the layers and image (audio) files is then for presenting them to Independence in the expected structure.

Again, the entire reason for doing all this and using instruments this way instead of the "so nice looking new GUI VSTi's" is scalability for large setups which becomes relevant when time and costs for productions are important.
