Slideshow widget can only work with 500 MB

Barry-Male wrote on 1/17/2020, 1:56 PM

I have six slideshows on my site, each with about 8 images which have each been optimised to around 300 KBytes. Although the widget accepts further images, they don't display on the site page. There's either a little symbol or a message saying Memory is full (depending on the widget I'm using at the time). A week ago, Support sent me the explanation posted above. Do the maths (!).... but 'Support' has not responded after this was pointed out.

I'm hugely under-impressed. Does anyone have experience of this issue? Has anyone found a workaround?

Thanks

@Barry-Male

Hi and welcome to the forum.

. . . . A week ago, Support sent me the explanation posted above. . . . .

I assume you mean that the widget can only handle up to 500 MB of pictures?

What is your computer specification? See this topic for details of what is required.

What resolution are the image files.

Is the error message in the web browser - if so which one are you using or is the error in all?

Hi John,

Thanks for the fast response: the message from Support simply said 'the slideshow widget can only work with 500MB' no other information. I have not found any reference to this in the Web Designer Premium manual. I have been using the Fade Slideshow 2 widget - there are 6 slideshows with an average of 8 - 10 optimised images of around 800KBytes in each. I can add more images to the widget, but they don't display in Preview Web Page - I get a small icon displaying instead. (Impossible to make out what it says). Interestingly, if I remove images, close and re-open Xara, return to Preview Web page - I still get the same icon ( which I take to mean 'No memory'), suggesting that no memory has been freed up by the removal of the images.

As an alternative, I tried creating a new slide show using the Xara Slideshow widget, but as soon as I try to add an image I get the message 'Upload failed. Not enough space available'

I have loads of memory available on my PC and on the graphics card, so don't know what memory is being referred to....just the sense that something is stuck (as well as me!)

Hi

. . . . 8 - 10 optimised images of around 800KBytes in each.. . .

What file format and dimensions, in pixels, are the images?

. . . .  I can add more images to the widget, but they don't display in Preview Web Page - I get a small icon displaying instead. . . .

I suspect that the 'Memory is full message' you are getting is due to a limitation of the Preview file cache size in Web Designer, it is not until you publish or export the site that you get the full capability of the widget ie on the real website they should all be there.

The widget maximum capacity of 500MB equates to approx 1600 images 1920 x 1080 pixels, web optimised jpg files of ~ 320 kB file size.

Nice thought, but when the site is published there are empty spaces where the new images should be.

Whatever I do I get the same message that the memory limit has been reached.

I have -

Reduced the number of pictures in a slideshow, closed/opened the program and tried to add new pictures....

Deleted a slideshow entirely, closed/opened and tried to add a new slideshow

Opened up another website with Web Designer and tried to add a slideshow

Opened an earlier version of Web Designer that I still have on my computer and tried to add a slideshow

If I can't find out where this memory is and do something about it, it looks as though I'm going to have to throw away Web Designer and start over with another program.

If you have any further ideas I'd be most grateful......

Yes - please provide the missing answers to the questions I asked above ie

- What is your computer specification as detailed in the link I posted? See my Signature below for an example of what is required.

- What file format and dimensions, in pixels, are the images?

Hi John,

The message comes up in front of widget as I try to add a picture.

They're jpgs, original size around 8-9 MB optimised to around 320kB, dimesions 6000 x 4000px

I've been using the Xara sildeshow in the past, without any problems, though with fewer pics.

Thanks for your interest....

Hi Barry

Thanks for the additional information.

A couple of potential causes are:

The amount of RAM in your system, at 4GB you may well be close to running out of RAM. Windows will take between 1.5 and 2GB straight away, the amount of memory in your graphics card will also take away some RAM, as well as any other running programs eg AntiVirus.

The one piece of information missing is the hard drive(s) size(s) and free space.

My previous Q9500 processor based system had 8GB of RAM and this ran Web Designer with no memory issues with large numbers of images.

. . . . original size around 8-9 MB optimised to around 320kB, dimesions 6000 x 4000px . . . .

Do you mean the optimised dimensions are 6000 x 4000 px?

If so then they are too large for web use - for most browsers and the current majority of monitors in use (1920 x 1080 px or less ) and image size of 1500 x 1000 px maximum is appropriate.

Interesting idea - do you think there's any way to test it?....I'm quite happy to bang in some more RAM.....and what is this 500MB that 'Support' refers to? The same problem seems to be affecting everything that I try, but the biggest puzzle is why nothing changes after I've deleted an entire slideshow - thus, presumably, freeing up memory.

There seems to be constant errors when uploading snips, so - briefly - I work on P drive which is 232GB with 89GB free and also have C drive which is 232GB with 100GB free.

The out-of-the-camera files are 6000 x 4000px. Press a button and Xara will optimise them for the web, which takes them down to 100dpi but doesn't specify the resulting dimensions.

Further thoughts much appreciated...

Barry

Hi Barry

. . . . The same problem seems to be affecting everything that I try, but the biggest puzzle is why nothing changes after I've deleted an entire slideshow - thus, presumably, freeing up memory . . . .

Memory usage is at the request of the running program to Windows and can either be:

  1. allocated to and released when a program requests more memory or has finished with it
  2. is allocated by Windows at the request of the program on first start and maintained as reserved memory while the program is running, it is only released when the program closes.

Theorising, I suspect that 'nothing changes' because the memory in question is reserved as a cache and is not being cleared correctly, a program restart will reset the cache.

. . . . out-of-the-camera files are 6000 x 4000px. Press a button and Xara will optimise them for the web, which takes them down to 100dpi but doesn't specify the resulting dimensions . . . .

Locate one of the optimised images, right click it and select Properties. On the Details tab you can see the actual width/height values.

In the context of images for the Web the dpi is irrelevant, it makes no difference to the file size and is for print only in determining the actual size of the printed image. You may also find that the original images are 72 dpi - depends on the camera.

A sample optimised pic is around 950 x 635 px. 0.6 MB @ 96dpi. As you say, dpi is a printing quality. On the camera, pixel density is slightly less than 6000 ppi...a typical jpg would be around 5.5MB with dimesions of still around 6000 x 4000. I'm using v16 of Web Designer Premium and don't get the Properties/Details tabs you refer to. I've done a restart every time that I've tried a change, but if it's a jammed cache, it's well jammed...any ideas? Where would you anticipate this cache might be located?

best wishes

Barry

@Barry-Male

Hi

. . . . don't get the Properties/Details tabs you refer to . . . .

Apologies, I should have made it more clear that I was referring to the images sizes that are created once you export/publish the site.

You may also have a default image size setting within the Slideshow widget.

. . . . I've done a restart every time that I've tried a change, but if it's a jammed cache, it's well jammed...any ideas? . . . .

Is it also 'jammed' after a Windows restart?

If so then I think we can rule out cache problems.

Taking a step back - if it is a RAM issue then adding more to your system may fix this, however there is no guarantee. If you have a friendly computer builder/repair shop nearby they may allow you to test before purchasing, you may also see a better performance with the computer.
