SF15Pro crashing repeatedly

SteveMTNO wrote on 7/19/2022, 3:21 PM

In the last 2-3 days, SF15 (build 161) has been crashing repeatedly. Seems to happen as soon as I try to paste content from one file to another. Files are 24/192 .wav format.

I'm running Win10, 64-bit. Ran a virus scan, just to be sure everything was clean. No issues there.

Tried rebooting, didn't make any difference.

No other programs are giving me any problems.

@SteveMTNO You can reset the program settings by holding CTRL and SHIFT and double clicking on the program icon or via the File menu. Perhaps this will help.

SteveMTNO wrote on 7/19/2022, 9:29 PM

I don't want to lose my program settings, so I don't think that's the solution. I might try a system restore to a few days before this all started.

If anyone else knows of a reason why this all started, please let me know.. thanks!

Did the 192/24 wave files come from the same source? It is rare, but I have encountered 'wave' files were not PCM, they were some kind of lossy codec with a <.wav> file extension, would not open and SF displayed an error message then quit.

If the system restore does not help, you can try a reinstall, if SF asks to uninstall, do not use a third-party uninstaller which can remove the pertinent registry entries and settings files..
Your custom settings should remain.

The files are all created by me, in SF15Pro.

Sorry @SteveMTNO, I really do not know and cannot duplication the behavior.
The only thing I can suggest is to try a work a round, by editing with the 'Event' tool, which allows more precise x-fades and other options.. then return to the 'normal' edit mode afterwards.

SteveMTNO wrote on 7/20/2022, 11:42 AM

I've never used the Event tool. Everything I do is either using the Edit tool or the Pencil tool..

Any tips on using the Event tool?

I just did a system restore and will try things again later this afternoon.

(I'm supposed to be working right now) :)

With the 'Event' tool when a clip (or file) is pasted or dropped into the timeline, it can be dragged around freely. X-fades between the clips (Evens) can be adjusted manually or automatically. The x-fade settings are in the 'Options> Event' menu along with the 'auto-ripple' parameter, which will move the downstream events accordingly. An existing event can also be split with the "S" key and the event's head and tail edges adjusted as needed. An event's gain can also be trimmed by dragging to top edge of the event downward. When the edit mode is returned to 'Normal', all the adjustments remain and SF returns to the typical workflow. It is extremely useful for precise edits and experimentation without the undo, redo, undo, redo in the normal mode.
It is very similar to editing audio (and video) in Vegas.

Just tried it again after the system restore. First time it worked, second time it crashed...

Here's what I'm doing:

Open two files, put a marker at the beginning of the 2nd file, ctrl-a, ctrl-c

go back to the 1st file, ctrl-end, ctrl-v

crash....

SteveMTNO wrote on 7/20/2022, 1:41 PM

Uninstall/reinstall seems to have fixed it. Tried the same process 4x and it didn't crash once.

Thanks, rraud!

edit - looks like I spoke to soon... The copy/paste issue is fixed, but the updater popup is back... :(

rraud wrote on 7/20/2022, 2:02 PM

I will try again to duplicate your procedure but I do not have the exact same files.
Does the behavior happen with other files as well, for instance a PCM 44.1 or 48kHz files. Also confirm that SF is set to "Allow wave renders up to 4GB" in the "Options> Preferences> General" menu,

I am not sure it will make a difference, but try setting SF for 'Single Instance' behavior in SF's "Internal" system menu .. or 'MuIti instance' if it's already set to single.

Otherwise, I usually suggest an uninstall / reinstall ... but uninstall using a third-party uninstaller like 'Revo Uninstall' that can remove the left-over registry entries and other pertinent data the OS uninstall leaves behind, which can cause issues to reoccur..
Revo Uninstall has a pro and freeware versions. The free version is adequate in most cases, When Revo scans for leftover data, use the 'advanced' mode, but be careful not to delete shared data, if there is another version of Magix Sound Forge installed,

SteveMTNO wrote on 7/20/2022, 2:30 PM

The copy/paste issue seems to be OK after the uninstall/reinstall. The problem now is the annoying updater device popup...

rraud wrote on 7/20/2022, 2:46 PM

The 'Update Notifier 'is a separate application that can be uninstalled. I only installed it in the first place to experiment to get rid of it. It is an option in the main install manger.
As I recall, it is in the 'Program Files> Common files > Magix' or similar folder.. or use Revo's Uninstall 'Hunter' mode. There are other ways to disable it as well.. search these forums.
You can also disable "Use NetNotify to stay informed..." in SF's "Options> Preferences> General" menu.

SteveMTNO wrote on 7/20/2022, 2:48 PM

OK, I think I got rid of the updater annoyance - so far, anyway...

Had to go here: C:\Program Files\SOUND FORGE\SOUND FORGE Pro 15.0\UPS

and delete the files shown in red:

Thanks to Pauly13 for posting this screengrab originally...

SteveMTNO wrote on 7/20/2022, 2:50 PM

and now the crashing is back.... :(

SteveMTNO wrote on 7/20/2022, 3:00 PM

The Update Notifier gets installed regardless of whether it's selected or not. Which makes it even more annoying...

SteveMTNO wrote on 7/20/2022, 3:09 PM

OK, not sure what to say/think now.. I just did the copy/paste process 4x, with different files each time.

No crashing, no updater popup...

Does that mean it's fixed, or just teasing me?

@SteveMTNO

Hi

. . . . Had to go here: C:\Program Files\SOUND FORGE\SOUND FORGE Pro 15.0\UPS and delete the files shown in red: . . . and now the crashing is back.... :(

Deleting files that the program references can cause more issues.

. . . . Update Notifier gets installed regardless . . . .

On first installation or an upgrade yes, in several Magix products there is a new option not to install it. Uninstalling takes about a minute, the latest version is known as Magix Cloud Import, older versions, Update Notifier, Magix Connect, Connect and Network Sync.

. . . . Does that mean it's fixed, or just teasing me? . . . .

What happens when you restart the program?

So far, so good. Haven't had any issues today at all. Keeping my fingers crossed...

SteveMTNO wrote on 8/11/2022, 3:48 PM

Well, the crashing was gone for about 3 weeks - now it's back..... any suggestions?

SP. wrote on 8/11/2022, 3:53 PM

@SteveMTNO You can try to reset Sound Forge program settings via the File menu. Otherwise a complete reinstallation of Windows can work wonders. I did this some weeks ago after getting blue screens regularly after a forced Windows update. No problems since then.

SteveMTNO wrote on 8/11/2022, 4:00 PM

I might try a system restore.. I just got an update yesterday (probably the culprit)

SteveMTNO wrote on 9/8/2022, 5:10 PM

System restore didn't do anything. Uninstalled and reinstalled the program. Didn't do anything. Still crashes repeatedly. Super frustrated at this point...

SP. wrote on 9/8/2022, 6:26 PM

@SteveMTNO You didn't reinstall Windows? A system restore is usually not a reinstallation of Windows which completely wipes your hard drive and also removes all broken drivers and OS components. This is why it works so well. But you need to backup all your data before doing this.

SteveMTNO wrote on 9/8/2022, 7:06 PM

Reinstalling Windows is not an option. This is also my work computer. I shouldn't have to reinstall the operating system to fix a single problem. There has to be another solution.
