You can stretch the audio object when the mouse pointer is over the object end and changes to a double headed arrow as shown below:

So those triangles--the ones in the lower corners on either side of the object--don't have any real purpose then?

They have specific functions, look what happens when you do the following with 3 audio objects on a track and butted up to each other

  1. Drag any of the triangle points.
     
  2. Try to dragging one of the objects by the side points, repeat this several times you may get lucky on some attempts.
