Scrambled aspect when applying “Gamma HDR” with default video module

abolibibelot wrote on 12/26/2018, 2:16 PM

I'm using Magix Video Deluxe 2016 Premium (I believe it's also known as Movie Edit Pro).

When I apply the “Gamma HDR” effect, I get a scrambled aspect if the video rendering module is set to “Default mode / Direct3D”. It's correct when I switch to either “Alternative mode 2” or “Compatibility mode”, but then I can no longer use the stabilization module properly : the analysis area can't be reshaped.

Also, with “Alternative mode 2” I get an incorrect display of colors for Rec709 videos (colorspace conversion matrix Rec601 is used instead, resulting in darker reds and lighter greens).

Are these known issues ? Are there known workarounds ?

My system : Intel i6700K CPU, Asus Maximus Hero VIII, 16GB RAM, no dedicated graphic card

Hi

What is the full program name and version number as found under Help, About?

. . . scrambled aspect . . .

What do you mean by this - aspect usually refers to Aspect Ratio which is the height/width ratio of the image - are you seeing this change or something else?

I can reproduce a HDR issue with Movie Edit Pro 16 Premium and different display settings, however it has nothing to do with the aspect ratio and is not reproducible in Movie Edit Pro 2019 which would point to it being an issue with 2016 and the Intel HD530 graphics card drivers.

More clarification and screen shots would help.

Like John EB, I can reproduce a bug with HDR in MEPP 2016 and it's been unfixed for a year or two. If HDR Gamma is set to any value other than zero it gives a similar appearance to setting Gamma to -100. No aspect ratio change.

I had to create another account, the password I created for the first is refused, and simultaneously I can no longer access the e-mail account with which I registered... O_O

So : full version is Magix Video Deluxe 2016 Premium Version 15.0.0.62 (UDC2).

When I say “scrambled aspect”, I don't refer to the aspect ratio, but weird shapes and colors, as shown in the 4th screenshot in that post, or this one :

(Apparently the file uploader doesn't work if a file name contains accents and/or non-ASCII characters.)

Oddly, while exporting, the display suddenly appears normal (and seems normal on the exported file), but as soon as it's finished it goes back to this weird aspect. As I said, this only happens with the default video mode.

Searches should find the earlier threads about this bug, which as I said is long-standing.

Hi @abolibibelot2

You are running what must be a completely unpatched version of MEP2016. There have been 5 patches issued for that version up to 15.0.0.114. The .90 patch said it "fixed a stabilization issue with interlaced material" ( unsure of the actual problem), but I am not sure the HDR problem was resolved in any patch or version until MEP2019.

There is much discussion about possible causes and some suggested workarounds in this thread:-

Take your pick, but it would have been good to get to the bottom of it!

You are right though, the Magix stabiliser can improve some types of (small jittery) motion better than Mercalli V2 or V4.

Another major advantage in using Magix internal stabilizer is the possibility of manually correcting some frames when, even after several attempts with different parameters, a particularly tricky shot – for instance a person walking right in front of the camera – produces an unwanted bump. And vertical or horizontal stabilization can be enabled / disabled separately, which can be useful in the same kind of situation : in the footage I have to stabilize, the jerkiness is mostly vertical, there's a sequence with people walking repeatedly in front of the camera, I managed to get a satisfying result by completely disabling the horizontal stabilization. Mercalli v2 is more like a black box, either it works as expected or it doesn't, there's no way to fine tune the result, or to try to track a particular spot of the frame if there's too much movement which can distract even the most sophisticated algorithms.

But I still haven't solved that issue with the small remaining border. It seems to affect lossless files in particular. If I apply stabilization to the original M2TS files there's no such thing. That jerkiness issue (caused by a camera malfunction) was so severe that many frames were blurred, I had to fix them one by one with Avisynth interpolation functions (FrameSurgeon and Morph), going through about 50.000 frames and fixing more than 4000, then exported the processed footage as Lagarith files, and Magix NLE doesn't seem to like those files. I also tried MagicYUV, UtVideo, HuffYUV, I had similar although not quite identical issues with all of them. Can this be caused by the system's codec configuration, or is there some setting I should change ? According to my tests, it would seem that when LAV filters are enabled for such a file type (Lagarith for instance), the playback is messed-up (frames from the same video are shown in a seemingly random order), if LAV filters are disabled the playback is fine but there are random issues on exported files, especially when fades and transparency effects are used.

@abolibibelot2

Hi

If the videos you are working with are not confidential, can you upload a section of the original video (about 20 - 30 secs long), that has the jerkiness problem, for us test.

Please upload to a file sharing site such Dropbox - not Youtube/Vimeo etc or the forum as they will convert the video.

Thanks

Hi @abolibibelot

I think we should continue the discussion about stabilisation in your other post. My apologies for mentioning it in this one but it was meant to be a passing comment possibly relevant,in relation to my mention of the unpatched version you are running.
