Rotate a filmclip, unable to export it for viewing

shgrude wrote on 11/25/2018, 5:14 PM

Hi,

I have tried in both MEP (18.0.1.213) and VPX (16.0.2.301) to rotate a small videoclip (filmed on a mobile).

I am able to add the film in MEP, not in VPX as it insist it cannnot due to lack of QuickTime.

I choose to create a new project setting the film Properties manually to the same as the film, except the widt/heigth and ratio, which I enter "rotated". I then add/import the file to the project/timeline. I apply the rotate effects to the Clip. (I also do some editing on the sound, cutting off unvanted sound). The film Plays correct in preview monitor, but fails to export in a usable file. I get the sound, and sometimes some Pictures, but mostly only black. The original film Plays OK in same mediaplayers.

I have also tried other export Methods, ie using the export Up-Arrow (upper-right in main screen, MEP) and various film quality/purpose without success.

PC Details should be in signature, using Win10Home, 1803 (not 1809)

Best Regards

SHGrude

I choose to create a new project setting the film Properties manually to the same as the film, except the widt/heigth and ratio, which I enter "rotated"

I was once faced with a similar situation: specifically, it was a VHS tape where a section of the footage had been filmed with the camera held horizontally!

I left the properties of the project unchanged (i.e. did NOT preset them to anything other than the default) and simply rotated the affected section; the affected footage played with broad black bands each side but no problem viewing the whole project.

IOW, I think that by setting your project settings to suit your footage and, it seems using the "Rotate" effect might have "confused" MEP.

Also, I notice the Audio Sampling Rate shows on your MediaInfo data as 32 kHz. MEP will "normally" expect 48 kHZ so could that also be the source of your problem?

Hi,

Just about to hit Send to make the same suggestion but see Jeff beat me to it.

FWIW, I hardly ever use the Adjust option on imports as it's often caused problems for me.

I have rotated phone video and then imported and exported out of MEP. Looking at you export settings I think the problem is with the ratio you set up. As others have said, it's best to export in a landscape mode rather than trying to export in a portrait mode which will give you black bars either side unless you change the background to white. .

I notice your original file is Variable Frame Rate. MEP hates this. Have you tried converting the footage with a Video converter program to a Fixed frame rate and while you are at it, the audio to a 48Khz as Jeff has suggested, before bringing it into MEP.

Also I am a bit confused about what your frame is supposed to look like after export? You have an export template that is set to 352x640 (ie 9:16 ratio as in your project settings) but has a ratio set below it of 16:9....??

Hi all, and thanks for your replies

I did try some more yesterday, however without any success.
I do not think the audio is a matter, as the sound is OK in the resulting videoclip (It is a film in a sense, however only just over a second long fragment - 20 frames, so I call it a clip).

Using the predefined movie settings, there is no setting for the media format I have. I have tried using the lowest resolution, and tried framerates of 25 and 29.97 and 30 (as the original is 14.985, half the 29.97). Same with export.

So I guess my question now becomes:

Based on the original media info provided,

1) What presets/properties should I choose for the new project?
2) What format and presets/properties should I choose for the export?
3) What codecs should I use if I export as MPEG-4 (I have both Default and Main Concept)?
4) Which program should I use; MEP or VPX?

I do not understand why there is not a simple conversion option to rotate a film without any conversion. I can play the original file rotated in various media players (VLC, PlayMemoriesHome and even in preview in MEP/VPX) but neither seems to offer an option to save it rotated.

@CubeAce

I will try that later, however, the sound is slightly off sync and I also want to remove some of the sound (there is a voice not supposed to be there at the end).
So in MEP I can rotate, unlink sound, cut off front and end, and then move the soundtrack to fit the movie.
But maybe just doing the rotate and then use the output of that process might ease the sound fix afterwards.

Fingers crossed.

But hopefully some of the experts ( @emmrecs, @browj2, @johnebaker, @terrypin, @Scenestealer and yourself) on the forum might have some answers to the points above.

Then why not edit it in MEP without turning it 90 degrees and exporting it in landscape and then rotate it after?

Hi,

We went through something similar about a year or so ago. Most frustrating. Basically, depending on the type of output, either most video players or the tv's do not like videos that have been exported in portrait mode. The original files seem to work fine, but not ones produced by an nle.

@shgrude

Please follow the basics:

  1. The project settings should be the same as the intended output, not the format of a video clip. Think about that. If you have video clips from several sources, one done vertically with a cell phone, and some photos with different resolutions and width-height ratios, you can't have the project set to all of them.
  2. Use standard project and output formats - don't go making strange ones that likely won't work properly. I use mp4 default (click on display all) - MP4, Full HD, 1920x1080 29.97p (frame rate because I am in NTSC land and all my videos are recorded as such).

In your case, you set the project to portrait or rotated because your video clip was done that way or something? You haven't explained how the video was shot. Looking at the info, it says 16:9, so why did you make the project 9:16, portrait mode?

Then you rotated the video. Why? I was completely lost as to what you were doing.

Is the video intended to be played back on cell phones in portrait format? TV's won't like this.

Start again and give us screen shots of the timeline and preview monitor.

As for the sound out of sync, I doubt that rotating the clip would solve that problem. In VPX (probably the same in MEPP), you can try first, Create frame table, to see if that resolves the problem. Then right-click on video object, Set audio-video offset. A table will appear and you can make fine adjustments with that.

@shgrude

And maybe a screenshot of the original playing in a media player if you are happy with how that looks.

Your questions 3) and 4) should not affect the result.

Sound sync errors can also occur as a result of trying to edit variable frame rate clips in MEP.

Hi all,

I have created a little video using MEP when creating the Project in VPX.

Unfortunately I did not manage to capture sound apperently.

In the clip I use default Full HD 50p as film format, and then defaults in export.

Looking at the result I think scenestealer (Peter) must be right in saying that MEP doesn't like variable frame rate videos. I think the clue is in the rendering as well. Looking at the rendering time taken, it starts slow and then really speeds up. Somthing is going really wrong there. MEP rendering speeds up when it hasn't much to encode, implying it is generating nothing much more than blank (or repetitive) frames at that point. My guess is it is trying to keep the file the same length time wise as the original but has no images to fill the frames with.

I have cut the rendering time and at some other time consuming tasks (creating proxyfiles) so you do not need to watch the entire process.

Downloading the Conversion program you suggested caused VPX and MEP to stop working due to mfc Versions. Needed to reinstall VPX (and possibly MEP, not checcked yet). Will try later using a converted file as Source.

Sorry for my conclusion but I can only go by what I see happening. It's a very slow rendering process then on your machine.

Also sorry about the program problems. I'm using the software I suggested for file rotation without any problems using MEP, but then my files are not variable frame rate files.

@CubeAce

Maybe I downloaded the wrong program, as I downloaded and installed the Conversion program. There were no option to rotate in that. I see now that I should have downloaded the VSDC Video Editor instead.
Will try later.

I checked off any HWA, as I am not sure which actually works as I have the NVIDIA GTX1060. I have tried enabling the built-in intel (i7-6700HQ), but it does not appear as a device. I may need to connect a monitor to the HDMI for it to appear but have not tried that.
I have used HWA in some occations and it sometimes work.

I have tried enabling the built-in intel (i7-6700HQ), but it does not appear as a device

In Program settings (shortcut Y)>Display options>Preview in arranger I see the following dropdown:

I run an i7 6700K CPU, so similar to yours and it shows up on that screen as "Intel HD Graphics 530", as you can see. I assume you do have it also activated in Windows Device Manager?

However, I do know that not all intel CPUs allow HWA, and it is only intel processors that can be used, so not AMD.

Jeff

Edited to add: as I wrote before, I see no point in downloading any program to rotate/convert your footage. MEP/VPX "Rotate" command achieves the same effect, IMO.

The Intel HD Graphics 530 does not appear in the Device manager, even though I have enabled it in BIOS (I pretty sure I have, can't find other options), however I have not connected any device to the HDMI port yet, so I hope it will turn up once I do that. However, this is OT, the HWA only reduces time, not removing functionality. There is a thread covering this issue that I will use in my pursue for HWA.

Thanks for all your valuable responses, not just in this thread, but all over the forum.

I take your point about my post on your intel CPU being slightly "off-topic" but did you also notice the Edit I added, which is, very firmly, on-topic!

Yes, I did.

I agree that there should not be any reason for using any other program.

So if I need to do the editing in 2 steps (or more) I should be able to use the same steps in VPX/MEP. Like just converting from current media format to ie avi or mpeg-2 or whatever and then use this as a source for next step of rotating the video.

Funny enough, the original video is in sync when played in VLC or PMH, so I guess it is when converting fps the audio becomes out of sync. As there are only 14.985fps in the original, one frame makes a out of sync of 7 hundreds of a second.
