Retrieve List of Media Files From .MVP Project

NormL wrote on 3/30/2021, 12:29 AM

Created original project.mvp file from Magix Movie Edit Pro 17. Upgraded to Movie Edit Pro 2021 Plus but upgrading the original project.mvp file didn't quite work to my liking. I want to rebuild the same project from scratch in 2021 but need a list of the photo and video files used in saved order from the original project.mvp. Is there an easier way to extract this list other than manually looking at each object (800+) in Storyboard mode and then copying the filename from the Object Properties popup window?

Hi and welcome to the user to user forums.

I'm assuming you are not copying your files into a project folder to cut down on disc storage.

So personally I would open the existing project and save with another project name. Then I would remove any video effects from the clips and images and rearrange them as needed on additional tracks lower down, muting the tracks not in use when not needed.

An alternative would be to make a backup copy of the project and use the facility to import copies of the files to the new folder so they exist in one place.

I'm sure if anyone else has a more efficient way of doing this they will chip in with alternative ideas later in the day. My bet is on either John CB or John EB having an alternative as they seem to work with projects more without copying the files into projects.

Ray.

I am re-doing some old projects done in previous versions of Movie Edit Pro (MEP) - I load the project file correcting any change of location for 'missing' files which you will be prompted tfor as shown below

use the Folder option to locate the file.

Once loading is complete the files should all be loaded into MEP 2021 in the correct order, however any effects or features from MEP 17 which are not available, or have changed, in MEP 2021 will not be applied or flagged as missing.

As @CubeAce has commented, I then save the project with a new name and re-work what needs fixing.

Thanks to @johnebaker and @CubeAce for the prompt replies. But not hearing from anyone else, I'm going to conclude that the answer is no, there really isn't a way to extract a file list from an .mvp file. So instead, I have another question related to the reason why I want to re-do my project. Basically, on a few .mp4 videos imported to MEP 2021, they will play in their entirety but then stall at the last frame for 5-10 seconds before transitioning to the next video. I was hoping if I started a new project file from scratch, this wouldn't happen because the original project file probably has some gremlins due to extensive editing it underwent to get to its current state. I tried deleting the video file and re-importing it but get the same result. Also, that video file runs fine when I import it to a new project with a few videos. So my question is whether anyone else has encountered this behavior and if so, is there a way to get rid of the stalling? TIA.

Hi Norm,

Yes, you can extract a list using the backup tool, as I've illustrated below.

You could then drag the files into a new project.

This may be a well known issue - we need more information:

  1. Computer specification
  2. Windows version and build number
  3. Video format and resolution that is causing the issue
  4. MEP 2021 version number
  5. Is there a transition or collage between video clips where the slow down occurs - if so which one?

See this topic for more details and please quote the processor and graphics card name/model in full.

Norm, you can check if it's your system choking pretty easily: does it happen if you start playing say 5 seconds before the end of the clip?

If so, do a Preview Render as follows:

  1. Set up a range over the top of the end of the clip
  2. Click the tiny lightning bolt at the left end of the timeline.
  3. Click Range, and MEP will preview-render that range; it will turn green when rendering is complete (watch the render bar at the bottom of the screen)
  4. Play the range by tapping the / key. If it's smooth, your system is on the slow side but jerky playing back the timeline but the final render should be OK.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi @terrypin, I generated the backup folder as suggested and although it does provide the filenames of the files in the project, I was hoping for them in the same order as they appear chronologically in the project. That didn't happen so didn't work for me.

@johnebaker, here are the requested specs:

Intel Core i5-4690K CPU, 3.50 GHz
12.0 GB RAM
Intel HD Graphics 4600, 128 dedicated memory, 2.0 GB shared
120 GB SSD System Drive, 1.5 TB Data Drive
Windows 10 Pro, Version 1909, OS Build 18363.11440
Movie Edit Pro Plus, Version 20.0.1.80 (UDP3)
Transition between videos: Cut (no fade)

@AAProds, yes it still happens when I start playing 5 and 10 (the frozen image for the video lasts for 8 seconds at the end) seconds before the end. After following your instructions, the video behaves the same and still plays smooth. Does that mean my system is slow and causing the last frame to freeze at the end of the video before transitioning to the next video?

AAProds wrote on 4/1/2021, 2:09 AM

@NormL

It could be that your system is a bit slow for MEP 2021 with it's very particular "requirements" for fast/smooth editing. That is why it is coughing at the object edges. The others will advise in that regard.

In the meantime, you can use the Proxy Files system, where MEP uses low-resolution intermediate files while you are editing, but uses the original masters when rendering out the project. I don't use Proxy files myself, but when you start a new project, You can choose to tick the Create Proxy files box.

Hi

Thanks for the specifications, however you did not answer point 3 - video resolutions, however if you are working with 2.7K or 4K video then the computer is definitely too slow.

. . . . 120 GB SSD System Drive . . . . .

This, IMHO, is on the small side - how much free space is there on the SSD drive?

. . . . 1.5 TB Data Drive . . . .

Is this an internal drive or an external USB drive?

If an external drive is it USB2 or 3?

From your original post I understand that you still have the original MEP 2017 MVP, as you said you'd opened it in MEP 2021?

So as you "need a list of the photo and video files used in saved order from the original project.mvp", why can't you just use that as your re-building point? Pretty well as suggested by @CubeAce

Hi

What is the issue you are having importing the MEP 17 projects into MEP 2021?

I can import them with no issues - other than files not being in the locations used in the original project and the time taken to convert the MEP 17 project file format to a MEP 2021 format .

@johnebaker, sorry about missing the video specs. The file is an MPEG-4 video with resolution of 1920 x 1080 (16:9 aspect ratio and variable frame rate, if relevant).

The SSD drive has only about 3 GB free - I guess I should clean it up to free up more space. The 1.5 TB hard drive is an internal SATA drive.

As for issues importing from MEP 17 to MEP 2021, I have no issues. My only issue is that some of the videos stall/cough at the end of the video for 5-10 seconds and I'm trying to see if there is a resolution for this. If not, I'll just have to live with the occasional video stall because the project video is for personal use only.

johnebaker wrote on 4/2/2021, 4:56 AM

@NormL

Hi

. . . . . variable frame rate, if relevant . . . .

MEP like many other modern video editors does not handle some Variable Frame Rate (VFR) video in the best possible way, preferring Constant Frame Rate (CFR).

. . . . My only issue is that some of the videos stall/cough at the end of the video for 5-10 seconds and I'm trying to see if there is a resolution for this . . . .

Running the video(s) through a video converter such as Handbrake to make it CFR usually fixes the issues.

This is the video setting in Handbrake for 30 fps AVC encoded, if your source video is not 30 fps, select the correct framerate for what the video was nominally set to when recording.

After conversion if you move the original file(s) to another folder and then move the converted file(s) to the original folder and open the project, when it popups asking where the file is point it to the new one - click it so it is selected and the video will be replaced, it should not need any tweaking - though not guaranteed.
