Rescue Your Video Tapes 6

rennidb wrote on 1/18/2013, 10:10 AM

Today I have purchased the above product, and have the following question please. Can this product only

convert VHS tapes that have been home made, or can they convert commercial VHS tapes that I have

purchased from a store?  Does copywrite of these tapes prevent me from converting them to DVD?

The salesman in the local store where I purchased your product was not absolutely knowledgeble about this product, so I do not even want to open the box and try in case I must return for a refund.

So, does this product only convert home made VCR tapes to DVD?

Regards

Dave Rennie

Hi

This is a difficult one for two reasons:-

1.    Some commercial videos had a form of copy prevention system to stop copying from VCR to VCR, whether this would affect digitisation only trying will tell.

2.     Different countries Copyright laws vary on this issue.

You will need to check your countries copyright laws on making a backup copies.

Hi Dave

The only thing that may interfere with copying a tape is as I said if they have a form of copyright protection on the tape itself, this is not the same as for DVD and Blu-ray discs.

The old tape protection system use to interfere with direct VCR to VCR copying for more reading see here.

If you have a tape with this protection on it then it is possible that it may interfere with the converter.

. . . .does copyright depend on a persons integrity . . . .

Most definitely - the grey area comes from the quirk in the law which allows you to record copyrighted TV programmes by VCR, DVD recorder and PVR's with impunity and yet making a personal backup copy from a commercial tape, DVD or Blu-ray of for example, a film, that has probably been transmitted on TV,  is technically illegal ! ! !

Hi,

Just to add to John's comments, what you need is a video capture device with a built in video stabilizer.  I don't know if the Magix capture device has one built in or not.  Best thing to do is try it.  You could try a software stabilizer and it could work if you used one of the higher end products but you would be looking a a lot of money.

For me the matter of integrity is this.  If someone makes a copy of something to preserve their investment and only for their personal use I am fine with it.  I am not fine with making a copy to give to a friend or relative.  I firmly beleive that the creator of any content is due the financial benefits from their work so I will not purchase boot leg copies of anything, nor ask for or accept boot leg copies of anything.

The law is much more specific and the penalties can be pretty steep.
