replay video clips in project mode

ccolreavy wrote on 10/7/2024, 1:02 PM

Hi Forum,

I'm using Video Pro x16. When playback edited clips I am experiencing delayed playback, which is making it difficult to see how sync clips and audio are edited correctly. I have the project on Proxy, but this does not create the smooth playback I want. My laptop is an acer predator helios 300 which should give me the CPU power I need. Any thoughts please.

Thanks, Cliff

Hi Cliff.

Is these the specs of your laptop?

Intel i7-10750H, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060M 6GB, 15.6" Full HD 144Hz 16GB Dual-Channel DDR4, 512GB NVMe SSD.

There are so many variations of this laptop so just giving us your laptop name in this instance is not really helping as the same name appears to be used on different generations of the machine using different components.

I do agree though that activating proxy files, at least on my machine does next to nothing to improve the smoothness of playback when used. If you have the lightning symbol activated have you tried also disabling any effects you might be using?

- GeForce CTX 1060

Should I upgrade my graphics card?

Thanks, Cliff

@ccolreavy

Hi Cliff.

Your processor has an Intel UHD630 GPU as well as the GTX 1060.

Are both visible and selectable in the Program settings?

If they are make sure all of them are set to the Nvidia card and not the UHD630.

I think you will find that laptop versions of nvidia graphics cards are hardwired in and not interchangeable. They are also lower powered versions of the desktop versions of the card. If you are not editing 4K files I think your current GPU should suffice.

If you have no effects in use and the playback is slow then it could be if the files are residing on the C: drive and there is not enough space for the program to move them around during editing as the program will produce huge temp files while the program runs. How much free space do you have on your C: drive? It should be at least 20GB, preferably much more.

Another cause could be if the files for the project reside on an external drive that is not very fast, or being read from the cloud via OneDrive or an SD card. All of which would present problems regarding smooth playback as the transfer speeds of the data to the program would not be fast enough.

Any effects running could also prevent smooth playback.

Ray.

Should I upgrade my graphics card?

Not yet! Although the GTX 1050 is one of the "lower-powered" NVidia range.

First please follow this tutorial and show us the full MediaInfo data of your source (unedited) files.

Then, please explain a little more about what you mean when you write sync clips and audio are edited correctly. This would suggest you are using separate audio and video files, rather than the more usual video files with embedded audio. If they are "separate", what was used to record/create the files?

Also, where are those files saved? Are you using only the internal HDD of your computer, or do you also have an external USB drive? What type of HDD does your laptop have? I ask this set of questions because it could simply be that your laptop is not "fast enough" to stream the various files and so achieve smooth playback.

Also, have you followed @CubeAce (Ray's) advice and tried turning off any effects you are using?

Hi

. . . . Should I upgrade my graphics card? . . . .

You would have to buy a new laptop to upgrade the GPU's, in general they are not upgradeable as the GPU chip is soldered in, and the laptop cooling arrangements and circuit board are designed for the installed GPU.

In addition to @emmrecs comment which effects have you used in the project?

Hi,

@ccolreavy

Sometimes Windows gets in the way with an overloaded temporary area. Try cleaning one of the temporary folders (in the Explorer address, type %temp% and delete all the contents, without any programs loaded). If that doesn't work, try deleting the vpx auxiliary files (extensions .H0, HDP) that speed up the project loading. I've had problems with MMS and I used these procedures to improve navigation of large projects and it worked! It's worth a try!
