Repetitive Incremental Pasting

estyne wrote on 3/17/2016, 8:18 PM

Currently I am using Movie Edit Pro 2014 Plus.

Is there a way to paste and element (photo, title, etc) xNumber_of _times  at  xNumber_of_intervals apart ?

Example:  I have a 20 minute video on track 1 & 2 and on track 3 I want to copy and paste a photo (the same photo) every 15 seconds for the full length of the video but of cource I want the program to do it for me.

Hopefuly I asked this clearly enough.

Thanks
Eric

Hi,

Not that I am aware of. All that I can suggest is that you do 2, highlight and copy both using Ctrl left mouse button moving them to the next location. Highlight the 4 of them, copy and move to next location. You now have 8 done, or 4 minutes. Do another and you have 16 done, or 8 minutes, etc. until the end.

Eric,

  • UPS!!! :-( Double checking and my scheme would cover your 20 minute clip with black. Adding chroma key 'black' seems to fix, but some other color might be needed depending on what colors are in your photo.

I'd suggest making a new object which is 15 seconds long. You didn't specify how long your repetitive photo is to be visible but say it is 1 second...

As shown above I've got one second of image after a 14 second gap.

Export the range only as a clip. I'd suggest uncompressed for best quality.

Now it's easy to just repeat the import of the new 15 second clip. Yes it's not automatic, but at least you don't have to worry about getting your image at exactly the right location every time, or multiple selection / copy / paste as John suggested. Added: and apply chroma key effect so the blank part is transparent!

This technique would also give you the option of image fade-in fade-out or other effect as well.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Carl

Hi Eric,

Couple of other points to add to John's suggestion:

(A). Best to make the successive copies in a new movie (tab), to avoid accidentally copy/pasting tracks 2 and 3. Or do the copying of the intermittent object in track 3 of an otherwise empty project.

(B). I recommend you use the Edit Range functions to do the copy/pastes, because otherwise you'll have the tedious step of re-positoning the marker at a newly calculated position at each step.

Assuming you have the object in track 3 of an otherwise empty movie:

1. Home (Moves marker to t = 0.)

2. i (Sets start of range.)

3. Manually move marker to t = 15 (assuming that's your required interval.)

4. o (Sets end of range.)

5. Shift + 1 (Sets a project marker at end of range.)

6. Ctrl + Alt + c (Copies range.)

7. Ctrl + Alt + v (Pastes at required place. Project marker is correctly re-positioned.)

8. Ctrl + Shift + PageDown (Moves marker to project marker)

Now repeat steps 4 to 8 N times, where N is chosen appropriately. For example, a further 7 repetitions will result in a total of 2 to the power of 8 = 256 copies, which would match a one hour video. The 16 redundancies at the end are to be deleted as a final step in the copying. Or simply check the timeline to see when you reach your required duration.

9. Ctrl + a (Select all 240 copies.)

10. Return focus to your main movie and Ctrl + v (Paste all below your assumed 1 hour video.)

It can all be done quite quickly.

P.S: John and Carl won't be surprised to hear that, if this was a frequent task, I would personally write a macro for it!

Thanks everyone for the assist.

I basicly did what John had suggested but added markers every 15s using "Set chapter markers automatily". Then I locked my video/audio track 1&2. Then on track 3 I did Alt + A (select all objects), Alt + C (copy selected ojects), W (to move to the next marker) and ALT + V (to paste the objects). It worked well enough and fast enough to satisfy me.

I did try Terry's method but didn't get the hang of it. Maybe a lack of understaning on my part.

Thanks again.

Hi Eric,

Your variation looks great, neater than mine. I didn't think of using chapter markers!

I also muddied the water a bit by using a 1 hour video in my example, instead of your 20 mins. The latter does allow chapter markers with intervals as short as 15s.

P.S: My KB shortcuts differ, as I have preserved settings over many years and MEP versions.
