Unfortunately it is not working with my NVIDIA Geforce GT 730 video card. No images in MPEG4 videos :(

@MAGIX_Redaktion

Hi.

I notice under H264 and H265 there is a disclaimer of handling common formats only.

Does this mean variable frame rate video from screen recorders and some mobile cameras and Go-Pros still need converting to constant frame rate before use?

Can you also be more clear on the term of using multiple graphics cards please? Do you mean the use of both the inboard Intel GPU or AMD with an additional graphics card or do you mean more than one nvidia or similar card can be used?

Any idea on how they are assigned?

Ray.

Hi.

Under the specs page that card is not powerful enough. That card has not been powerful enough for sometime now. My advice would be always read the specs page before trying any new software and make sure your machine reaches all the requirements.

X13 is not a usable product for me. X12 was working perfectly. X13 renders standard (non 3d) videos with hiss in the audio now. So many other editing issues that I'm not going to waste time doing Magix testing for them.

And working with 3d video is broken in so many ways that I'm fairly sure it was completely untested prior to release.

Not a great start folks. Will be sticking with X12.

@CubeAce

Ray, nothing in the specs says you need a high-end graphics card simply to open a MPEG 4 video. Having to disable hardware acceleration simply to view videos on the timeline is one thing; to not explicitly state that in the specs is entirely another.

That whole specs page is misleading and confusing.

On one line it says this:

Graphics card: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1060 4GB VRAM

Then 2 lines down it says:

Graphics card: Onboard, min. resolution 1280 x 1024, 512 MB VRAM and DirectX 11 support (recommended: Intel Graphics HD 520 or better for MPEG2/AVC/HEVC)

This is not clear at all. Obviously, an igpu is not a "Graphics card" in the normal sense of the word. "Onboard" means what? Plugged into the motherboard and not external (there are external graphics cards)? In my mind, "onboard" certainly doesn't mean an ipgu.

There is no clear description of how the graphics cards and the igpu actually operate with the program.

*1.2 is also confusing.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

. . . That whole specs page is misleading and confusing . . . .

I find the specs clearer then they were for VPX 12, with the exception of lack of details of what the 'common formats only' are.

So far:

  • export settings Calculate video effects on GPU has been dropped
  • Import & Export tab has no HWA options
  • There are more choices for GPU selection in the program settings

I also managed to trigger Hardware Acceleration has been turned off during export 😕 and freeze parts of the program - cannot close/exit.

Another Q:

Is this correct? MEP exports H264 both using the default encoder and the MC encoder.

What other sort of MPEG-4 is there if not H264?

If the conditions in the brackets apply, then there should be a tick there, not a cross.

Things should always be "Yes" with conditions, not "No". No means No. 😉

I upgraded with VideoPro x13 today; now i have Magix Pro X version 19.0.1.98. It does not work in the Section option "effects". it always crops in the same way 16: 9 landscape (in my case). Whether you try with 4: 3 portrait, 16: 9 portrait, free proportions etc ..... nothing changes

@AAProds

Hi Al.

They also use the term onboard to describe the motherboards inbuilt sound chip so I assume the mean inboard as in integrated GPU. Maybe lost in translation? There is this on another page.

The advertising and specs together to me read, 'This will work as advertised if you can supply all the hardware to fulfill the total specifications'.

After all it still states 'Some advanced program features demand more of your computer's processing power. To get the most from these features, your system should at least meet the recommended requirements'.

*1.2 is also confusing.

I too can't find anything on what *1.2 means in codec or container terms.

There is no clear description of how the graphics cards and the igpu actually operate with the program.

Hence my question above.

I think that both setting up Windows and other programs seems to be getting harder as time goes on let alone having to think about what is meant by certain specification needs when deciding whether to upgrade a program or not.

Nor is it lost on me this is incarnation designated with the suffix 13 😉.

@Mr-Wood

Hi.

As the last two manufacturers of 3D televisions have both announced they are ceasing the production of 3D TVs it is possible it is now considered a 'dead format' and not worth additional research. Best a question for Magix staff.

Ray.

Hi Alwyn

. . . . Is this correct? MEP exports H264 both using the default encoder and the MC encoder . . . .

AFAICS the MC encoder has been dropped, in the program you get to choose which GPU is used and a quick test shows that:

HWA selection is now in the Advanced section of the export dialog -

  • Software - is CPU and iGPU with the CPU having a greater load then the iGPU
  • CPU hardware - iGPU has much higher load with CPU suppot less than above
  • GPU hardware - is a hybrid mode with both NV doing a some work and the iGPU performing the encoding - this mode is very similar to the Hybrid mode on my laptop - and is a lot quicker.

. . . . What other sort of MPEG-4 is there if not H264? . . . .

MPEG-4 is a container file format not a codec - just about any video codec, subtitle files and still images can be in the MP4 container file.

. . . . If the conditions in the brackets apply, then there should be a tick there, not a cross. . . . .

Agreed

@Franco-Pradal

Hi

Confirmed - looks like there are some bugs in there, none of them work correctly when the AR of the project does not match the AR selected in the section dialog and they all go full screen with the Full screen option turned off.

Hi,

On my MicroSoft, SP4:

Not off to a good start. I imported a video clip, made a few cuts, started viewing the second video clip (same camera, just the next video clip filmed a few minutes later) and the program disappeared.

Since having moved, I haven't got my desktop up and running yet.

Just updated today, now getting a External Codec Error message when exporting the video.

@paulsweigert. @browj2

Hi

I can replicate this - so far I have narrowed it down to a specific combination of options of GPU. The only combination of settings I can get to work, so far, without the above error or Hardware Acceleration being deactivated is:

Windows Graphics settings: Let Windows Decide or Power saving

Program settings:

Export settings:

I am also finding other bugs:

After the error message could you close the program? VPX hangs for me and I have to use Task manager to end it, sometimes there is also a Magix update dialog showing under VPX.

Glitches with 2 collages on export, 4K UHD default settings as shown above.

Added: time to read the manual - the possible combinations of Windows Graphics (3), Program settings above (64) and Export options (3) gives a theoretical total of 576 possible combinations !

Hope to hear from you some time next month then John. 😂😉😔

Sounds like it would either be better not to have a Windows setting at all or Let Windows Decide. Make that four Windows settings 😁.

At least I found one answer.

'Apple's latest image format HEIF can now be imported into Video Pro X. Together with HEVC import, Video Pro X provides comprehensive support for media from Apple's iPhone 8'.

So, no need for QuickTime? Variable frame rate support implied?

Hi John

What does the book say about the Device Options >Hardware Acceleration section of the Program Settings?

I must confess I have never understood what Magix mean by HWA for Import ?

The HW CPU option is interesting. This may be an attempt to bring the CPU into play more when there is no iGPU in the system, based on observation over the recent years where CPU usage has generally dropped in favour of the iGPU as more tasks have been allocated to the Intel.

Hi Ray, Peter

Manual read and no help at all, also has many errors in the descriptions compared to what you see.

I did try the Microsoft WARP settings - they are equivalent to about Warp 0.9 compared to the UHD at Warp 1 😂 time to beam up to bed.

Found a possible issue with Collages made with video clips in an earlier (VPX 12) project - get a 'flash' and missing part on export - we have seen this before - need to do more testing as the same collage with images does not exhibit the flash/missing parts.

There is a change in the way Size, Position and Rotation works - the reference points are the centre of the screen and centre of the object not the top left hand corner - confusing at first, not to mention they are all in one effect panel.

. . . . The HW CPU option is interesting. This may be an attempt to bring the CPU into play more . . . .

It does CPU usage increases about 15 - 20% on my system - the iGPU is hardly used.

. . . . I have never understood what Magix mean by HWA for Import ? . . . .

Do they mean for accelerating the decoding before rendering/export?

Yes the "New Features" show that you can set a random rotation point which is something that was discussed as a desired feature in a recent post on the forum.

The specs suggest (see Supported Graphics cards) you can now use a discreet video card for HWA Export of H.264 ( as well as H.265 ). This has been a long time coming - can someone without an Intel onboard iGPU test this please?

I'm not sure that is strictly the case although I'm not sure. Any OFX effects I have in use within MEP or VPX (Boris Titler) almost max out my CPU as they primarily use CPU cores over GPUs. They also seem to eat up a lot of ram. I wish it were possible to just download a manual to look through although judging by Johns remarks it doesn't seem to be helping much.

Why is Magix also quoting use of an nvidia video card almost out of production. The 1060?

I hope John can roll back a version if necessary.

I can see us getting a lot of frustrated users over the next few months. Where were the beta testers?

Ray.

MPEG-4 is a container file format not a codec - just about any video codec, subtitle files and still images can be in the MP4 container file.

John, I am aware of that, but we are only talking about exporting video from VPX. Could you do a Mediainfo on an exported MPEG-4 and tell us what video codec MEP has actually used?
