Redundant backup files?

terrypin wrote on 6/2/2018, 4:40 AM

Q1: Does the very latest MEPP (which I've not yet decided to install) suffer the same annoyance as mine in backing up automatically to MV_ files even if no editing has been done during the set interval?

Q2. I use File > Backup copy > Copy project and media into folder to backup important projects. The results include MV_ and HDP files. Am I right that these are not necessary?

Q3. What is the benefit of their existence during editing anyway? I frequently delete their clutter to make it easier when browsing in File Explorer and haven't noticed any significant performance issues.

Hi Terry

Q1. Yes

Q2. Everything is copied, the .h0 and .hdp files are not necessary, they get recreated when you reload the project, keeping the MV_ is a good idea.

Q3. The .h0 and .HDP files contain the images of the video as seen on the timeline and the waveform of any audio - there is something else however I cannot remember what it is.

I use a backup SyncBack to back up my projects as it can be set to exclude files, however the downside is that any MEP generated audio eg using Soundtrack Maker does not get copied across as it is normally stored in the AudioTemp folder

Morning John,

Thanks for the speedy reply. I'll automate regular deletion of .h0 and .HDP with a macro.

But those pesky MV_ irritate me!

Hi guys,

The notes for the new version of VPX state:

"Fixed problem that occurred when too many automatic backups rendered the project file invalid"

I was hoping that this was fixed in VPX but looking at the backups, they were at 10 minute intervals and I was not at my computer. We'll have to ask Magix what this fix means.

Hi John,

Sounds to me like it means they've fixed a bug that occurs when the number of automatic backups exceeds a certain level. BTW, I'm curious to know what that bug is, and if it applies to MEPP 2016/7. IOW, is this particular 'invalid project' issue recognisable as due to excessive backups and not some other cause, as I encounter invalid/corrupt projects quite often, usually inexplicable.

Anyway, it seems clear that Magiix have still not fixed the long-standing bug that backups are obviously not needed when the program is inactive. Which would IMO have been a more logical and welcome way of fixing whatever problem they have apparently fixed by some other method!

Oh really?

If I am missing .ho & .hdp files, my project will load but there will be no audio track (& so no sound) for those video clips that have missing .ho & .hdp files. It does not recreate them, may be it is because I only use standard MEP.
