Recording what I play on a VST instrument - how do I do it?

ThisIsNotTheMusic wrote on 5/30/2016, 4:46 AM

I have just purchased MMM16, never used this type of thing before. I have made a couple of cool synth tracks, but I want some decent sounding guitar so I purchased Rock Guitars VST. I can play a tune on it - sounds good. When I try and Record what I play direct from the VST I either get horrible fuzzy noise or nothing. I have it set to MIDI RECORD, change to the ASIO sound driver as instructed, then hit the REcord button in the transport cxontrols. A track is recorded, but then its not working out as described above. I know there will be some simple setting to adjust somewhere but I really need a good tip on how to get this to work. Would appreciate it - thx.

Hi,

You cannot record anything that you play on the keyboard that is with the VSTi, you have to use the MusicMaker keyboard or an external MIDI keyboard.

Do you have the basic or Premium version of MMM?

Take a look at my tutorial on Getting started in MusicMaker.

Thanks JCB. I will try that. Can I load the Guitar Instrument then play it on the MM Keyboard though? If not I don't see the point in the Rock Guitar or other VST plug-ins. I have the Premium version. Very new to this, but having very much fun with it so far except for the odd frustration like this. I was considering buying a MIDI keyboard - do you have any recommendation?

Cheers, TINTM

Hi

. . . . I was considering buying a MIDI keyboard - do you have any recommendation? . . . .

I would recommend you get a good branded keyboard, eg Korg, M-Audio, Roland etc,  preferably with 49 or more keys.  Lower than this and you have the added annoyance of having to switch octaves as you are playing.

Do be careful with those that have drum pads, the pads they may not work with Music Maker depending on which version of MMM 2016 you have.
