Recording Audio

Bobbie-Barr wrote on 3/22/2023, 9:44 PM

Last night I recorded a video. This morning I recorded a video. Everything was fine. This afternoon I went to record a video and this is what I got. I checked the mixer to make sure the cats didn't do anything. I unplugged the mixer for awhile, I rebooted the computer and also shut it down for awhile. I also talked to my friend over the Ring camera and it was fine. It's not the mixer or Mic. I unplugged the mixer and hit record and got the same thing. It must be my program.

I'm sorry. Please do the following didn't come up before I posted. I clicked on Movie Studio 2022 Suite so I thought that is where I was at. I have a Dell Optiplex 990 with an Intel Core I17. Everything has been fine since I downloaded Studio 2022. It is not my microphone or mixer because when they are disconnected Movie Studio still does it on record. I tried the recorder that comes with Windows 10 and it is fine. My microphone works with the Ring doorbell and Zoom just fine. It only makes that sound in Movie Studio 2022. Like I said, I have been doing videos since I downloaded it with no problem. I was recording yesterday morning with no problems. Then at 3 pm I listened to the playback and heard it. I tried searching the problem and I only come up with Audio Cleaning. I don't even know what to call that noise. Last night I re-installed Movie Studio 2022 and I still have the same problem.

Hi.

Can you play back older recordings OK in the program or the imported audio from other files?

Do you use the timeline view and can you see waveforms in the recordings you can't hear correctly?

What are you choosing to record? Is it audio only? What audio input do you choose?

What is the mixer you refer to?

The Dell site has no record of your machine without more detail from you track down.

Ray.

Hi Ray,

I know it's not the Shure Mic or the Behringer Xenyx Q1202 mixer because I unplugged both of them last night and when I hit record I still got the same thing.I choose the Audio input when I record. This morning I deleted Movie Studio Suite 2022 and did the $39 upgrade to 2023. Still does the same thing. I did open Music Editor 3 and it's working great. And yes, I am able to open old files with no problem. I am totally stumped.

CubeAce wrote on 3/23/2023, 9:23 PM

@Bobbie-Barr

It's possible that a Windows update caused this as some Windows updates reset the inboard audio chips to the Windows default which with Stereo mix is off by default.

In my image above you will see it has three options in the record section. Two microphone and one Stereo mix.

It should be set to to stereo mix. That is what the program normally uses for internal recording if your mixer is using a USB port unless the mixer has it's own driver. Any other used input ports in use should also be visible.

Do not select microphone or line as the mixer is using USB.

To check go to Settings / System / Sound, on the right hand side of the screen click on Sound Control panel.

Open the recording tab and check the Stereo mix (It may have another name depending on the inboard sound chip used) is visible and enabled and then make sure the Advanced tab does not have audio enhancements enabled.

If the mixer does show up as an independent input make sure that is enabled.

Also check that you have not disabled the mic input in the Windows sound settings. Some some reason this has to be enabled for the program to work even if not used.

Last but not least check your program settings within MMS 2023 and check you are using the wav driver.

If all those settings are all OK from the outset then it could be a corruption of the program but it seems doubtful unless there is a bit of the program left behind in the uninstalling process.

It also helps us a lot if you do put as much information about your setups specs into your Signature as @Promidi requested as sometimes it can be very helpful to us with fault finding.

I hope you meant uninstalled rather than deleted the program as that could cause untold amounts of problems with files being left behind across the system that won't be reconnected with a new installation of the program.

Ray.

But remember, I totally disconnected the mixer and mic and when I hit record in Movie Studio (2022 and 2023) I get the alien thing. So it can't be the mixer or the mic.

Hi

I can replicate this issue, when the recording levels are too low, eg when the sound level meter does not show any green bars when recording.

Normalising the audio produces a weird effect, it does not sound exactly the same as yours.

Once the recording levels are correct ie the sound meters are well into the green, close to approaching the orange bars, the recording is OK and normalises correctly.

Check all the recording levels Mixer, Windows and Movie Studio and that the microphone is not muted.

I too can replicate this problem. It seems to be with selecting the recording audio function only.

If you choose instead to screen record instead you can record audio. The audio is recorded as a pcm file and you can choose a sample rate of 48kHz for the recording. That is independent of the windows settings and ends up 16 bit regardless of any Windows settings. For me I have to select Stereo Mix but it may be something else for you.

It shows as a mxv file but could then be exported as a wav file if need be.

Whether this is a bug that has crept into MMS or not I can't say as I have not used it personally but it is also present in VPX 14 and at least MEP 2022. The puzzle is you seem to have used it previously but I couldn't from the outset.

Hi,

I am not sure what you are doing. Are you recording using Video recording or Audio?

In the image below, which one did you select?

My guess is Audio.

Please show screens as follows:

Click on advanced:

Did you record Stereo or Mono? For Stereo you would need two mics or a stereo microphone. Otherwise, you should be recording mono.

Hi John. (CB).

I had never bothered to record mono before as it only shows the left channel recording but on trying it and playing back it appeared to be centralised in the mixer and not to the left. Good to know. Also there does appear to be a possible quality gain in the signal to be had although I can't hear a difference myself.

Also opening the same project again. Deleting previous recorded tracks and then trying to re-record using the audio option I can now record to tracks 1 & 2. I have no idea what has changed other than if now there are other tracks with audio they have to be muted to prevent also being recorded but that could be down to me using Stereo mix rather than Mic. Not sure but last time the other audio tracks were not muted and didn't get recorded.

It does appear (to me at least) that selecting some of the options (apart from choosing to record mono) makes no difference to the end recorded file. It make no difference to the end file data except when recording at less than 48kHz.

Ray.

Hi John, Ray

Tested in MEP 2016, and 2023, recording just audio, and screen recording, same issue when signal level is too low and apply Normalisation.

I meant to mention - the whining sound, in @Bobbie-Barr original post, sounds like low level electrical noise eg fan winding up in the PC.

Hi John.

I agree it sounds like a wrong input is connected that has no signal coming in and the Windows mixer volume is at maximum on the input.

I am still concerned that @Bobbie-Barr has a wrong selection in the Windows options. That the mic selected should be the one from the motherboards inboard audio chip (or if a dedicated sound card is present) and not one from the USB mixer itself. That can be selected separately from within MMS. As you have pointed out in the past John, MMS relies on Direct X and not ASIO.

Notice the Icon appear only during the recording process.
