Recording

I have a 76 weighted keys Clavinova. It has 2 MIDI input/outputs on the back. Are the MIDI cords necessary to get a different instrument sound? I can just plug my 1/4 inch guitar cable into the Cllavinova and use and use an adapter on the other side to get it to record a track. After I record the track, can I change the instrument? Also, using the 1/4 guitar cable, can I just change the instrument in the Music player program and hear the instrument as I am playing my keyboard in real time?

Hi

. . . . I can just plug my 1/4 inch guitar cable into the Cllavinova and use and use an adapter on the other side to get it to record a track. . . . .

In this case you would be recording the audio output of the Clavinova - this is not MIDI and can not be used to control an instrument in Music Maker.

To control an Instrument in Music Maker there are several options for using the Clavinova as a MIDI controller:

  1. connect the Clavinova MIDI out to a MIDI to USB converter connected to the computer
    or
  2. the computer to have a MIDI in port which you connect the Clavinovas MIDI out using the correct cable.
    or
  3. the Clavinova to have a USB port to connect it to a PC as a MIDI controller.

In all cases the select the appropriate input device in the program or recording settings and you will need to consult the Clavinova manual for setting it up for as MIDI controller/keyboard.

Do you know how to record with the onboard keyboard?

Hi

. . . . Do you know how to record with the onboard keyboard? . . . . .

I assume you mean the keyboard in MMM as shown in the example below - if so then you can either use the computer keyboard or the mouse, although both are 'clumsy' compared to using a MIDI controller/keyboard or the Clavinova if it can perform the same function.

Here is a quick example of setting up the track, you will note that once the record has been clicked there is a delay due to you having to select the keyboard before actually playing.

You can also 'write' or edit the MIDI notes using the MIDI Editor - see the PDF manual.

Hi

. . . . Yamaha's website and it said that my operating system is not compatible . . . . .

AFAICS the only OS requirement is for the Digital Piano Controller app which is iOS based.

Which model Clavinova do you have? To use it as a MIDI controller via USB, Windows should provide the required drivers.
