Quicktime error message

chadbresson wrote on 6/14/2021, 12:19 AM

I downloaded a Vimeo file to edit in Movie Edit Pro. MEP will not load the video into the project. Instead, there's an error message regarding needing quicktime to run the file. However, the file downloaded from vimeo is not quicktime (or .mov), it's mp4. Why is the project rejecting this file when it is not quicktime but mp4?

@chadbresson

Hi Chad.

You say downloaded but it seems to have some of the same embedded data variations as some of your previous shown MediaInfo analyzed clips. Open GOP structure, variable frame rate, odd frame rates, etc.

Are you downloading directly of using a screen recorder?

My guess would be (and it is a guess at this point) is that the file header is being misread but because of the nature of the file would need converting to a fixed frame rate anyway.

Looking on the net there does seem to be a lot of trouble associated with the Codec ID : dash (dash/mp42/iso6)

Ray.

Hi Ray

. . . . Open GOP structure . . . .

AFAICS the video is closed GOP ie the encoding setting is  open_gop=0

In Binary value options 0 = false and 1 = true.

Hi

The codec id is dash which is known to give problems, as Ray has commented, may be due to it being a streaming format, quite why MEP should ask for Quicktime is a bit of a mystery.

When you 'downloaded' the file from Vimeo, did you use any browser plugin to capture the stream or other software - if so what?

I often wonder if screen recorders and similar are deliberately produced this way to reduce the probability or re-editing as a form of copyright protection or whether they just have to adjust to the download speeds that can vary.

Just the Chrome browser using a couple of different Vimeo download buttons/options. This has never happened before... I've never had an issue downloading from Vimeo and immediately editing in MEP. In fact, this is the first time I've seen the variable rate on one of those files. It's almost as if something is corrupting the file in the dowload or in the encoding of the recording itself.

btw... I ran the file through HandBrake for constant rate and was able to edit in MEP. So, issue resolved. I guess. LOL

But this raises another question I suppose for a different thread... if I'm constantly having to use HandBrake to "fix" variable rate files created by these platforms (Facebook, Vimeo), why doesn't Magix just build the variable rate to constant converter into their MEP, rather than me having to resort to HandBrake every time?

@chadbresson

Why doesn't Magix just build the variable rate to constant converter into their MEP, rather than me having to resort to HandBrake every time?

Magix may not own or have been part developer of that specific codec variation and it may have to be bought under license to be able to be used. There are lots of variations that diverge from the base codec with most having some form of copyright and licensing attachment to them. Newer Apple mov codecs being among them.

Then there is the interaction of the program and the graphics drivers, also with limitations as to what they can do or have dropped supporting, that can be seen in the documentation that can be downloaded along with the latest drivers. All the time companies are vying for advantage in sales and deviate in their implementation of the codec bases I doubt if any one set of program developers can keep pace or even want to.

If you search the net you will find various problems associated with various coded variations from known base codecs and the ability for various video editors to cope with them.

I think this will only get worse over time rather than better as even dedicated video cameras now seem to have a bewildering amount of select-able codecs and implementations of them from within their menu systems.

You can find this type of conversation going on in all of the various video editing program forums although not all having trouble with the same codecs.

You may then ask the question,'Then how does Handbrake or similar programs manage to convert the files for use?' to which I can only say, 'I wish I knew'.

Ray.

Hi

Codec ID                                 : dash (dash/mp42/iso6)

As I mentioned in a recent post - the so called Codec ID in the "General" part of Media Info's report, is a misnomer and actually refers to Container Format information and it is this difference between some .MP4 files and others that use the same AVC Codec and contents but different Container information that is written within, that causes some to play and others not.

...quite why MEP should ask for Quicktime is a bit of a mystery.

This could be because mp42 is a format used by Quicktime created files.

Hi

Peters comment above has set me on a different track with the Vimeo video?

Peter - dash/mp42/iso6 vs XAVC/mp42/iso2

Do you think the iso6 vs iso2 may be the difference, AFAICS this is referring to ISOM, however I cannot find a reference to ISOM (ISO) 6, I also suspect that the video was encoded on a MAC and ISO6 may be an Apple container variant - either that or MediaInfo is wrong.

Chad - when you downloaded the video file did you select the HD 720 Encoding settings option or Original.

If the Vimeo video is not on a private channel, can you post a link to it please.

Give FFDShow a try for decoding MP42 in MEP:

I am experimenting with various types of AVIs and MEP wouldn't open FFV1 or FFVHuff files; when I activated those in FFDShow, MEP now opens them with no issues.

I would suggest you set a Restore Point or take a system image prior to this JIC, but I have had no dramas at all with FFDShow.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.
