Quality of original video

Can the quality of an old video tapes actually be upgraded so it is less grainy? I'm having a great time learning how to use the basic RYVT's version 4, and it's initially done a fine job. But now being used to HD the difference in quality is now more apparent. I am still learning how to use the editing functions, understanding bit rates and whatever... The thing is, some TV programes repeated from the 80's on TV are of a fuzzy quality and I presume if the proffessionals don't/can't remaster films then it's out our league!

Sadly the answer is no, you may be able to gain some marginal decrease in graininess but this is usually at the expense of sharpness.

A VHS VCR  picture is approx equivalent 333x480 pixels, so you are already starting with lower definition material than a standard DVD at 720*576 or HD at 1920*1080.

Hi, Yes there is software that can enhance the quality of analog tape, but it will still not deliver anything close to HD resolution.  The source tape deck you use to input the tape material into your computer is critical as is the capture device/card.  Here is a good article to better explain this http://www.digitalfaq.com/guides/video/introduction-restore-video.htm   There is also "video enhancement" software such as vReveal which shows some dramatic examples on their web site, and it is "freeware" so you may want to give it a try but I have found that it reall provides not a lot more correction than already exists in MEP Pro.
